My Week in the Life Album 2015 + Video

I just finished my first Week In The Life album - actually my first ever album - and wanted to share a little about my process & what the project meant to me. I have a video at the end of my post that goes through every page in my book & some of the stories of our week. I've started mini albums in the past, but I've never completed them, so I felt like I needed to give myself a big round of applause when I finished my last page.

If you're not familiar with the Week In The Life  project, it's a concept originated by Ali Edwards with the purpose of capturing a week of time of your life in photos & words. I like to think of it as a time capsule of my life right now.

I've been thinking about memory keeping in a new light lately. Story centered memory keeping just makes sense to me & it's like a light bulb finally went off in my head & I understand why people scrapbook and how meaningful it can be. For me, it's not about adding another creative outlet to my day or playing with pretty paper or artful techniques. It's about telling the stories of your life and allowing the paper & products to come alongside & tell a visual story that sometimes words alone can't express. Don't get me wrong - I love the scrapbooking *stuff* just as much as the next person, but because my focus has changed, the purpose for using those products has changed & my thirst for storytelling is in full force.
I purchased the Week in the Life kit off of Ali's site & I'm so glad I did. Not only did it come with the perfect sized album, but the prompts & products included were a great jumping off point.  I also purchased these Memory Keeping Doodle Prompt Printables from Brandi Kinkade's shop & they really helped me to get things organized and documented... and to top it off, they're super cute! Another great resource are the Daily Sheets which are free on Ali's website.  I talk about all of these resources in my video, but wanted to give you links just in case you wanted to check them out for yourself.
I found that Post-it notes were my best friends. I worked on a day or two at a time & jotted down stories that I wanted to tell & photos (with sizes listed) that I wanted to print out.
Throughout the week, I collected as much ephemera as I could. It's just another visual reminder of what life was like this week for me. Some people's albums are very sleek, clean, & modern & I think they look amazing... but I really wanted to let my personality shine through in this album, so it's full of mismatched pages, lots of color, texture, & what I like to call "fresh vintage" details.

The great thing about this project is - there are no rules! Capture what's meaningful to you in a way that speaks to your heart. Make it as simple or complex as you like it. I am a person who likes to add a lot of details. It just makes me happy & being happy motivates me to keep going. I smile every time I flip through my album & see this shop tag. It immediately reminds me of the happy mail that I received that day & gives me such a clear visual of that moment. (I mentioned Christine Herrin's shop a few times in my video & this Happy Mail printable was a free download that she sent to her newsletter recipients.)
I'm not a great photographer by any stretch of the imagination, but I didn't allow that to be a road block for me. All of my photos were taken with my iPhone & to me, they're good enough. They serve the purpose & I love them even if the lighting was bad or the composition wasn't perfect. I printed out all of my photos at Walgreens because I could upload them from home & by the time I reached the store, they were ready for me to pick up. Again, not the highest quality prints, but it worked, it was very inexpensive, & it allowed me to get my album finished... and that's what my top priority was.
So... without further ado, here is my completed Week In The Life album:

Studio Calico December Daily Video

The Studio Calico team is hosting a blog hop today featuring the new December Daily kit.  It's available here for preorder now, while supplies last.

I created a short video for you with sneak peeks of the kit... and the whole reason I've decided to do this project this year.  As I was making this video, I have to admit - I got a little emotional.  It's true what they say about time flying by & I want to remember these moments that I've shared with my family forever.

I'm new to scrapbooking & while I was working on this project last season, I was really surprised at what a difference it made.  I know it might sound strange to those who've never done it, but this project made me look at the holiday season with new eyes.  Suddenly, the things that ordinarily felt busy & exhausting became exciting & fun.  I looked at our time spent in a whole new light, loving when I could capture a moment & document it as part of our album.  I don't know why exactly, but it made our season more meaningful... and I wish I would have started this project years ago.

You can find the full list of contents here.  (This kit is PACKED with awesome supplies!)

The kit ships free - even to the North Pole!
I hope you'll join me this year for December Daily!

Be sure to check out the Studio Calico blog for links to all of the blog hop participants.

Embroidery Hoop Love

There are certain images that just pull at my heart-strings.  I absolutely love embroidery hoops.  I'm not sure what the fascination is.  Maybe it reminds me of simpler times... or maybe I'm just naturally magnetized to anything that symbolizes "handmade."  I found this hoop shape in the Silhouette store & knew I would put it to good use.  I love the little stitching lines that are part of the cut-out!   I know I've mentioned this before, but the Cameo cuts so perfectly!  I love that machine!

If you notice below (in my supply list), the hoop shape comes just as one solid piece.  To create a wooden hoop AND a "fabric" interior, I simply added a circular cut line before I cut out my craft cardstock.  (I cut out my ledger paper regularly & then glued my altered kraft section on top.)  I love that the Silhouette will allow you to alter designs so easily!

The paper & buttons are from October Afternoon's Farmhouse collection.  The ribbon is actually part of Crate Paper's Peppermint Trims - but you would never know it was a holiday ribbon!

I finally got to use one of my favorite stickers from the Amy Tangerine Remarks Sticker set!  I love silhouettes & I love woodgrain... so the combo is pretty awesome in my book!

I am also REALLY loving these scripted words by Ali Edwards.  (They're part of a stamp set from Technique Tuesday.)  I only wish my own handwriting looked so pretty!

Thanks for taking a peek!  You can see more at my Two Peas Gallery.

February Studio AE from Technique Tuesday Blog Hop

I'm so excited to be joining the Technique Tuesday team for their blog hop this month!  February's Studio AE stamp set is called Favorite Story by Ali Edwards.  As soon as I saw this set, I knew it would be perfect the perfect addition for my Project Life album!

Now... I have to preface this post by saying that I am brand-new to scrapbooking.  I am a paper crafter & cardmaker... but the idea behind Project Life completely stole my heart.  And actually, as you'll notice, I've adapted a very eclectic version of PL.  I like to call my system Project REAL Life. (Sometimes I do an entire week on a two week spread, sometimes I do a full page just on one day... and sometimes I skip several days entirely.  I like to use random products & reach for whatever I'm drawn to at the time.)  I'm just excited to finally find a system that I can use to record my family's day to day life.  It's not perfect by far, but it's a way to keep my memories & it makes me happy.  :)

I used a variety of Technique Tuesday stamps & loved how they fit in my divided page protectors!

The Favorite Story stamps are perfect for creating your own journaling cards!  I think I'm going to stamp up several just to have on hand for future pages.

I used Ali's Loving Words set for the sentiment below & the hearts are from her Love Always Wins set.  I stamped the number 1 from the December Daily set onto my playing card to reflect the date.

Even though the December Daily set is designed for holiday projects, most of the images are perfect to use all year long.  The lined journaling box and date oval are both from the set.  The sentiment is from the Love, Ali set.

I used part of an image from Love, Ali for the circular embellishment below:

I have to also mention one of my favorite new gadgets!  The Pogo is a portable printer by Polaroid that prints 2x3 borderless photos.  (You can also print Polaroid-style prints with the white border by downloading a free Pogo app on your smart phone.  The printer is bluetooth compatible.)  The REALLY cool thing is that this printer requires NO INK!  The photos are developed with Zink technology & it uses heat to create the print.  I purchased my Pogo on Amazon for under $40 & the photo paper is very inexpensive as well.)

The sentiment "things remembered" is also from the December Daily set, stamped onto washi tape.
