Bold Fashion Choices--Bunny's Zoovy Clothes!

From the pages of Bunny #20 (1971), what all the cool kids are wearing:

And the best reader-submitted designs of the month?

And yes, "zoovy" is an actual word:

Zoovy, indeed...

Manic Monday Triple Overtime--Roses Are Read, Bunny Is Blonde...

From Bunny #20 (1971):

Sadly, Bunny lasted only one more issue, so the "best" poems were never printed in a future issue of Bunny. Which means that, somewhere in their vast archives, Harvey must be sitting on reams of really exciting Bunny poems!

Still, there's no reason why, 43 years later, we can't write our own poems about Bunny and her cast!! Go ahead--take a shot!!

Shakespeare--Soul Of The 1970s!

Bunny's little sister, Honey, is about to get caught daydreaming in class...

Oops...

That me be a little bit of an over-reaction, Miss Crinchfield!

D'oh!!!

So, Honey does what any self-respecting teenager of the 70s would do--she goes to see their friends, the superstar band The Soular System!!

Brace yourself...

Observations:

A) This class really has nothing to do with Shakespeare, does it?

B) Miss Crinchfield is an easy A

C) Methinks this might be setting up a number of students to be mighty disappointed by Hamlet...

D) We really need a 2014 version, with, say, Bruno Mars coming in to sing about how "fly" Chaucer is...

Friday Night Fights--Mild-Mannered Fruiterer Style!!

Folks, you better brace yourself, because you're going to get a Friday Night Fight like you've never had before. And I apologize in advance.

We've spent much of this week wallowing in the glory that was Bunny, Harvey Comics' attempt to be cool, hip and with it in the 1960s.

But what I haven't talked about is the back-up feature that ran through all the issues of Bunny--Fruitman!!

Who dat?

Percival Pineapple, mild-mannered fruiterer (yes, that is a word!), you see, had the power to transform himself into any type of fruit.

Seriously.

Now, you may not think that makes him much of a crime fighter, but oh, how wrong you would be. As you can see, he even got his own special.

Really.

Anyway, in this tale from Bunny #9 (1969) (sadly, no credits are available!!), Percival learns that the two no-goodniks are planning to rob the bank!

And the plan works, because in the 1960s, people would stop whatever they were doing if someone walked in and started singing rock 'n' roll!!

But fortunately, Fruitman was on the scene!! Just watch!!

OK, that just happened. Somebody actually published that, and 41 years later I reprinted panels from it. This may be the apex of our culture...

Even though the intensity of Fruitman's fight against evil just put Spacebooger into a coma, you should make sure you go and vote for my fight. Because trust me, I've got lots more Fruitman fights I could run if you don't!!

And all you readers--join in the fights. Lordy, if I can make do with Fruitman, you cats can whip up something pretty compelling from your collections, right? Come play each Friday!!

The Soular System

As I said yesterday, Harvey made an earnest attempt to connect with 1960s pop culture. Which doesn't mean they were always good at it...for example, they tried to hitch their wagon to this group in 1968:

Well, that lasted one issue. By 1969, Harvey Pop Comics had dumped the Cowsills and gone to their teen mainstay Bunny to carry the "Rock Happening"!!

Well, the "rock happening" apparently failed as #2 was the last issue of Harvey Pop Comics. But that wasn't the end of Harvey getting jiggy with it.

Now, you all know my deep affection for faux comic rock bands. But the past is only prologue, baby, because you are about to meet the greatest of all:

The Soular System!!

Marcy, Gideon, Randolph and Bomby (??) are Soular System, a hip and happening soul/rock group that were regulars in Bunny's world. Let's follow them for an issue, shall we?

The invite Bunny and her sister Honey to a "soular jive happening," which the girls assume means a "super-rock concert."

So they pile into the Soulmobile:

They go to the fairgrounds...Bunny and Honey think they're performing on stage there...but:

The merry-go-round isn't all:

Back on the road, this time to the spot of the real Soular Jive Happening:

But when they get to the club Kaleidoscopic Zoo, they don't go to the stage or the dance floor...nope:

Oh, yeah, the Beatles clearly ripped off this idea for the own Soular happening (not to mention the Be Sharps)...

But there's Harvey's teen comics in a nutshell: a happy musical group just traveling around singing, and everybody having fun. It's groovy!!

This particular Soular Jive Happening occurred in Bunny #9 (1969).

Tales From The Quarter Bin--Bunny

Many moons ago I shared the...stunning...attempt by Charlton Comics to hop on the hip and trendy teen pop culture bandwagon of the 1960s, Go-Go.

Well, it wasn't only Charlton, folks. The need by middle-aged white collar men to try and somehow appropriate the zeitgeist of the wacky 60s for sales purposes was so pervasive, so irresistible that even Harvey Comics got in on the trend.

Harvey?? Makers of eternally timeless Casper and Hot Stuff and Richie Rich?

Oh, yes. Because every other month (and then quarterly, and then whenever they felt like it, apparently) from 1966 to 1972(?). Harvey gave us the comic adventures of...

Who??

WHO??

Oh, Bunny!!

I''m going to show you the whole cover now...beware, this might feel like an acid flashback:

Click on it to understand what life was like for your parents in 1971...

FACT: This is far from the wildest cover of the series. Presented for your consideration:

Click on all to embiggen...if you dare.

Bunny was pretty harmless stuff...essential a melding of Archie and romance comics as filtered through an amazing 1960s Laugh-In lens. Bunny had her adventures with her boyfriend, Marc; was harassed by her friend (but secret enemy!) Esme; had a multi-page letter column in most issues, which was mostly advice to lovelorn teenage girls; pages of fan-designed dresses for the characters; odd reader contests like the one we covered Monday; and as much "authentic" 1960s slang as could be crammed into one comic.

Oh, and Fruitman. Let us never mention Fruitman again.

Oh, and they worked really, really hard to turn Bunny into an honest-to-gosh teen fad, marketing "pop art" posters:

And the "Bunny Ball In Club":

Look, Ball was Bunny's last name, so take those dirty-minded sniggers...oh, never mind, it is hilarious...

As I said, mostly harmless. And, distinct from Charlton's often mean and condescending Go-Go, Bunny appeared to have an actual affection for 60s teen culture, especially the music, which makes a fairly pleasant, nostalgic read.

Did I say music? That's tomorrow's topic...

Slay Monstrobot is sad to report that Bunny apparently never crossed over with Casper or Richie Rich or Wendy or Little Audrey or Hot Stuff or Sad Sack or Little Dot or Little Lotta or...
