Tangled Web?

Well, well, well.

After months (and months) of studiously avoiding the issue of exactly what the frell happened at the end of "One More Day," some info has finally started to trickle out.

First, in the freebie Marvel: Your Universe Saga (available free this week at Marvel Digital Comics, if your missed it at your local shop), which recaps the last few years of Marvel continuity, we get this gem:
Using his vast powers, Mephisto saved Aunt May's life--at the cost of Peter and Mary Jane's marriage, which the demon erased from history. Unaware of what he has lost, Spider-Man continues his adventures.
Now, one would hope Marvel wouldn't print that without it being kind of official. So it wasn't some amnesia spell--Mephisto actually rewrote history, and Peter Parker is unaware of it.

Which is interestingwhen we consider the other precept they laid down back in the first issue of Brand New Day: ""Absolutely no one knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Not Daredevil, not the Avengers, not anyone." At the time, I wondered exactly how that would play out with characters who HAD to know Spidey's identity, such as Venom or Norman Osborn (unless gazillions of stories were wipe out of continuity). This made the situation sound more like a mind-wipe than an actual historical change. But now Marvel says nope, it's a historical change.

Which brings us to Amazing Spider-Man #569, where Norman Osborn is confronting Peter Parker (click to make it larger if you can't read it):

Peter forgot that others forgot..."Everything WE did?"

Second thing to note: Venom can sense old host Eddie Brock from blocks away, but can't sense that Parker was a former host when they're in the same room. And he remembers that he was bonded with Spider-Man, but not Parker.

Third thing, when Spider-Man confronts Osborn:

Just for the record, that is one fucking great panel."This time, you have no idea who I am."

So, assuming everyone's been playing fair with us, (including the editorial staff in their "official" pronouncements):

Peter doesn't know about the deal with Mephisto, which actually altered the timeline (so this speculation would be wrong).
Osborn used to know who Spider-Man was, but doesn't anymore (so past stories DID happen, Peter remembers, others don't, at least not the revealing parts).
Everything "we" did is still "up and running." (so the reason for the lack of memories is due to some specific steps Peter and ? took)

So Mephisto changed history, but within that new history, Peter and someone did something to erase memories of Spider-Man's secret ID.

Who? Could be Professor X...he's got the mojo to wipe out that many memories. But a Spider-Man connection? And could he effect an alien symbiote like Venom?

Could be Doctor Strange. He's got the mojo, at least from time to time. And he was hangin' with Webhead, during the "New Avengers on the run" days.

But what about the Sentry? He's pulled this "everybody forget about me" shtick twice now, with his awesomely undefined powers and his ultra-super-computer CLOC (and with help from Dr. Strange the second time). He and Spidey were New Avengers together, and Avengers HQ was the Sentry's Watchtower.

So what if, after Peter reveals his identity publicly (but before he splits the official Avengers), he has second thoughts, and gets Sentry to help him undo that with his awesome memory-eras-o-vision thingie? Or, after he splits, he sneaks back in, and gets the Sentry to help him anyway (or someone else..."we"...Doc Strange, perhaps?).

Just noodling. But that's my guess: Sentry.

Now the real question. Was that part of the deal with Mephisto...perhaps what Mary Jane whispered to him? Or was it just a natural occurrence of the new timeline--without MJ's support he wasn't as confident of his decision to reveal his identity, so he recanted and rigged up a giant Zatanna for everyone?

Obviously, I think about these things too much...

UPDATED--A Man Alone?

So what, he lost the black costume??UPDATE: It looks it was indeed Marvel policy to keep Brand New Day Spider-Man isolated from the rest of the Marvel Universe. Quesada at San Diego CC: "When we started 'Brand New Day,' we didn't want Spider-Man to start crossing over into the bigger Marvel universe. But now we're starting to bring in the old villains. You're going to see those guys in full force."

I love it when I'm right.

Back to the original post:

While reading Amazing Spider-Man #566, I noticed something.

Seeing Peter hop around in a spare Daredevil costume (what, Peter has no spare Spider suits?? One goes missing and he's out of business??), I realized that, since Brand New Day began, Peter Parker has essentially been isolated from the rest of the Marvel Universe.

There's probably a few good reasons for this, of course. Bendis' decision to make the Avengers mags all flashbacks about non-Avengers has certainly eliminated (temporarily, I hope) one of Spider-Man's main venues for interacting with other Marvel characters.

The directive that we have all-new villains has, I think, distanced Spider-Man, by not letting him interact with anyone who might have interacted with anyone else.

Unofficially, I wonder if the writers just don't want to deal with the headache of having to figure out exactly what Spidey's continuity is with other characters, what they're supposed to remember and what their current, Mephisto-altered relationship with the wallcrawler is supposed to be. Given that the Marvel "brain trust" seems to have yet to have decided exactly what's in and what's out after the retcon, it's maybe the wiser strategy.

But whatever the reason, until Daredevil showed up the past couple of issues, it's been pretty lonely for Spider-Man. And wasn't that always one of the great things about Spider-Man, that you could never tell who might turn up in his mag? Even without Marvel Team-Up, you could never tell when The Human Torch, or the Punisher, or Captain America, or Nightcrawler, or Daredevil, or gosh knows who might show up, even if only for a cameo.

But under Brand New Day (question: at what point does it stop being a brand new day??), it's almost as if Spidey were in some alternate pocket universe created by the Time Trapper, or a static warp bubble, or something. Is that what Mephisto did? Hmmm......

But really, I don't care. Dan Slott et. al., let's have Spidey start interacting with the Marvel Universe again. Please??

The Stupidest Answer to a Question EVER

From the Cup O' Joe Panel at the NYC Comic Con, as reported by Newsarama (Quesada is, of course, Joe Quesada...McCann is Jim McCann of Marvel marketing:

A fan started by complimenting Dan Slott for his approach to continuity, before moving on to a question/complaint about "One More Day," specifically that Spider-Man's identity being public didn't last as long as this fan apparently would have liked.

Quesada clarified that he never said it was going to last 10 years of 5 years, just that it wasn't going to be undone at the end of Civil War and that it did indeed have lasting implications. "I'm not an elected official, at the end of the day," said Quesada.

McCann added "If Spider-Man hadn't been unmasked, 'One More Day' wouldn't have happened, and then 'Brand New Day' wouldn't have happened, which is still going on, so we're still feeling the effects of Spider-Man's unmasking."

So, let's see if I understand this reasoning: Because we undid what we originally did, what we originally did is still effecting things. Because we undid it, and we haven't un-re-did it yet

I think a few galaxies just imploded thanks to the gravitational pull of that pile The sheer illogic made Spock cry 300 years in the future...of illogic. I guess that's why McCann is in marketing...

And while I'm on the subject...now that we've had three full months and 12 full issues of Brand New Day, I'd like to mention that we have yet to see a single story or plotline that we couldn't have had if Mary Jane were still married to Peter. Not a one. So, good thing it was so dad-blamed important to destroy 20 years of continuity, eh? Somebody wake me when swinging single Peter actually has a date or something...

Some Answers (Maybe and Sort Of)

Perhaps realizing that no one knows WTF is going on with Spider-Man's continuity now, Marvel has released this double page spread from the first issue of Brand New Day (click for a jumbo readable version):

It really isn't a good sign when you have to give your readers a scorecard, is it?Hmmm. "Absolutely no one knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Not Daredevil, not the Avengers, not anyone."

Hmmm...I wonder how that works with Venom. And Norman Osborn doesn't know? How many stories--even 40+ year old stories--were premised on the original Green Goblin knowing Spidey's identity? Did they not happen, or are everyone's memories just altered?

I wonder if the Watcher still knows--just how powerful is Mephisto?

I'll bet you a billion dollars that Bendis blows this in New Avengers...

You know, some DC characters could use this kind of knowledge-erasing bomb to go off (I'm lookin' at you, Bruce Wayne). I wonder if Mephisto can work in the DC Universe? Hey, maybe the mysterious Earth-52 is the Marvel Universe!

See? Was that negative? I can be positive about this Spider-Man mess...grrrrrrrr.
