Tales From The Quarter Bin--That Weird Simon/Kirby Shield Reboot!

In the late 50s, Archie Comics asked Joe Simon's studio to recreate/relaunch the good old MLJ heroes, to catch some of the DC Silver Age zeitgeist that was out there.

Which is where this came from:

Note that he's not actually refereed to as The Shield on the cover, and only so sparingly on the innards of the book:

This guy was completely divorced from the origin identity of the original Shield. See, snoopy scientists are investigating some weird stories they'd heard about fellow scientist Malcom Fleming...

Well, they threaten to have the boy taken away, and at the same time the less-squeamish commies plan to kidnap Roger for themselves. Stuff happens, there's a car crash in the mountains, and everyone dies except Roger...who's found by a hillbilly couple:

Thank God her name is Martha, in case he ever has to fight Batman!!

So, Roger Fleming gets raised as Lancelot Strong (!!), and just about at the point his powers emerge, he's drafted!! And so, for two issues, we get the adventures of a super-powered Gomer Pyle!!

As I said, weird stuff, man.

Tales From The Quarter Bin--The Shadow of Riverdale?!?

There have been a lot of portrayals of The Shadow over the years...

...but none quite like the Archie Comics version!!

Wha...?

When Archie picked up the licence in 1963, they played it more or less straight for oneissue:

But it didn't take long for them to decide they would rather make it a super-hero comic than a pulp crime series:

And when Jerry Siegel took over as writer, well, all connection to the past sort of vanished, as the book tried harder and harder to look like Marvel comics of the day:

Hey, who needs powers of hypnosis and mind control and a blood-curdling laugh...

...when you can have utility belt gadgets and quips!

Hell, the book even mocked the very idea of the "old" Shadow:

Still, you can't argue with Shiwan Khan's death traps:

Archie's The Shadow ended after 8 issues, leaving a cliffhanger unresolved, and mankind will never know if he ultimately triumphed over the insidious Elasto!

Bold Fashion Choices--The Fox!!

One of the best things about heroes with a poor fashion sense? They can get better.

Take poor Paul Patton, "former all-around athlete at Penn State." Apparently he wasn't good enough an athlete, all-around or not, to make it in the bigs in any sport. So, naturally, he winds up as a newspaper photographer.

Sadly, Paul wasn't an all-around photographer. He never got good pictures, and while on assignment in West Virginia, he allowed star reporter/potential girlfriend Ruth Ransom to get kidnapped by the Klan (I guess with a name like Ransom, she should have seen that one coming, eh?).

But Paul has a solution to both problems--become a super-hero with a camera in his costume!! First he invents a new kind of camera...

The designs the costume around said camera...

...and straps himself in!

You know, it's only 1940, but Paul sorts kicks Peter Parker's ass here in the "take pictures of yourself doing super-heroics" category.

So, surely this brilliant scheme is accompanied by a dazzling costume for The Fox. Right, Paul? Right??

You have got to be kidding me!!!

No, he's serious.

Even by the laxer Archie hero standards...that's a sucky costume.

Seriously, he looks like an escaped mascot from a college football game, or a refugee from a children's television show. It would be considered crappy even if it were a Halloween costume!!

And that mask!!

But even the most serious sins of all, fashion sins, can be redeemed. It took a few months, but eventually Paul managed to come with with something a wee bit sleeker and dynamic looking:

But even in that tight costume...

...he still had the camera going!!

Call the Pulitzers...AND Mr. Blackwell!!

Before is from Blue Ribbon Comics #4 (1940). After is from Blue Ribbon Comics #18 (1941).

A Hearty Welcome...

...from the DC Universe to the Archie Heroes. Specifically, a huge welcome to the green-and-yellow garbed standout, The Fly!!

Imitation is...
Oops, wrong cover...how ever could I have made that mistake? Anyway, here's The Fly:

...the sincerest form of flatterySo, just out of curiosity...the whole point of Final Crisis is to bring Archie and Milestone into DC continuity? Why, you sly Grant Morrison...
