The pub rock series of episodes stopped at #79. Shows 80,81,and 82 ,were standard programming, but on this episode ,#83 ,I brought back the U.K. punks ,for another go ,this time doing cover versions of some of their favorite/least favorite songs ,from bands that came before them. A lot of punks covered the beatles for some reason ,and I think the drunken, live, Sham 69 version of "With A Little Help From My Friends",is tops ,on that list ,and also the Damned with ,"Help" (Thanks Captain!) .There is a set of covers by some of the Sluggisha Tapes stable , with only a Fall cover (By Ephedrine Symphony) taking up with the U.K. versions ,the rest are ,well look below and read the tracklist! Cool collage above, pictures many of the bands featured in the pub rock series!

TEENAGE MUSTACHE - Super Noise Abbey Road

Great new release from the king of the new Northwest noise scene ,comin' outta Seattle. Noise ,is a given ,as mentioned in the album's title ,but the experimenting isn't dulled by noise. There are seconds long tracks set up next to long drawn-out numbers. There are samples ,keyboards ,guitars ,effects ,advertisements ,yelling ,and ,yes ,noise! Has nothing at all,(I think?) , to do with the BeatlesAnother fine piece of the puzzle from Washington state. Next up from this exciting artist ,a split release with Florida tardcore kings ,The Blood Red Oscars !!!.

THE KOTO MUSIC OF JAPAN - Nonesuch Records ,1965

An impressive study of Japanese koto music ,in varying styles. 6 different masters play pieces solo ,and as duos and/or trios. This is the mono version of this fine album ,procured from the back room at Record Trader ,the storefront of my Ft. Myers,FL pal ,Ralph Tarantino. Pristine vinyl ,not a pop or click or scratch to be found! Since the interest in my post ,"Koto -The Beatles" (found here: http://archive.org/download/Koto-theBeatles/279Koto-theBeatles.zip  ) ,garnered over 200 downloads (including receipients as far flung as Captain Sensible of The Damned! and his friends) ,I figured it was time to unleash this beast upon the ears of the world! The liner notes are very informative ,telling the stories of each of the masters ,and the tales behind the music. Could not find a link to this anywhere ,but did see a few sites selling the lp. Very zen ,and trippy ,almost a Japanese version of the Indian sitar music.Mellow and merry-making. Cover art by John Trotta ,produced by Jac Holzman ,recorded by Katsumasa Takasago in Japan. Most folks don't know the famous Japanese koto was actually brought into being by the Chinese! Part of Nonesuch's "International Series".

FLESHLIGHT APOCALYPSE / ICE CREAM SANDWICH SHIT HEAD - Split - Masturbating On Children Then Paying There Parents Off

On this split ,ICSSH is battling new artist Fleshlight Apocalypse ,for the award for the most inane acoustic guitardcore band! Fleshlight kicks in a few covers : Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians (What I Am) and a Lou Barlow(?) number ,as well as a few other original tunes. ICSSH ,on the other hand ,is up to his same ol' tricks ,givin' you a laff ,songs of cops greatness ,ryan dunn's death, and the beatles sucking ,amongst other subjects. ICSSH also has a split coming up with Dylan's band ,Hell Garbage (Kaagootaabaa also has a split with HG coming soon!) This is tardcore fun!

CAT MACHINE -Wrong Drug Right Time

There are a few true -story songs on here, most notably,"Paul Kline" ,and a song tied in with his ordeal ,"Baker Act".Paul was a school chum of mine, who killed a few people, after graduating high school.Weird titles and tunes abound ,such as:"Sok On A Fork"(a re-make of a tune from "Unplugged"),"Pathological Intoxication" ,"Wide Spectre" ,"Sniff The Clipper" ,"Violins Fucking Horns","Blowing Up Beatlemania","Sleeping In The Ashtray",and more! Chipmonk kicks in some of his weirdo lyrics on ,"I Had Lunch With Hitler's Cronies","Goat Ate The Payroll",and "Me And My 7 Foot Self" ,amongst others."100 Flowers Rule",shows our love for that group, and "Methadone Grease Spot",is a sonic guitar instrumental.Lots of oddness going on here,a truly underground,outsider,cult-band,these guys are.Their,(incredibly!) 30th release!!Just the core foursome here ,on 3/2/1991.

BUD SHANK -I Am The Walrus b/w Sounds Of Silence

Bud Shank was a jazz alto sax player and flautist for over 60 years. He died in April of 2009.This 45 (I may post it at 33 speed sometime, let me know if you wanna hear that!) is pretty damn great.when the sax kicks in,on ,I Am The Walrus ,it almost sounds like a sick seagull!

THE WAIKIKIS -Midnight Luau

The main reason I'm posting this,is for my pal ,Captain Sensible,of The Damned. He really dug when I posted" Beatles Koto",so I give you more. This album,7 of 10 songs of which are Beatles covers, which are played by a steel guitar, flute and organ ensemble, are mellow and weird ,in a resort lounge sort of way.Their 3 original songs are even more bizzare.Check it out,Capt!

KOTO-THE BEATLES

hey you!playing beatles rock band!try playing this you amateurs!a koto ensemble plays the beatles biggest hits!from japan!i don't think you will find this anywhere but here!check it out and leave comments ,you dumb beatles fans!and japanese folks!thanks!from the liner notes,"this project is not just a superficial attempt to combine the songs of an english rock group with japanese traditional instruments, but rather a demonstration of how the timbre and functions of the koto can bring hitherto unthought of charms to the works of the beatles"
