ONE FELL SWOOP - Live! At The Draft House ,Downtown Ft.Myers ,Florida 2/26/1992

I found a lost live recording in the vault! This is a really good one! Our last gig ever ,at the Draft House ,Joel ,our defacto drummer ,had a broken arm ,so he was relegated to keys and also did vocals on a few numbers.Shane Carwile was beating the skins ,Chipmonk and I were on guitars ,and Billy Drake plays guitar on a number with Sean Burch on vocals! The last track is the very first time FUCK (the terror rock band with Mad Asshole-bass vox,Big Black Cock -guitar ,and Shaggy Dick -drums) ever played together ,with a totally improv number ,"You".They later recorded several sessions together, and toured Europe. But back to OFS! Different versions of all their set list ,all their usual covers ,and some improv instrumentals. New covers we never played before include ,Wire's "12XU" ,KISS "Rock N' Roll All Night" and Cat Machine "Queen Turd Of Shit Hill"!And the usual covers of The Fall ,The Flamin' Groovies ,The Beat Happening,Syd Barrett,Pink Floyd, the Stooges ,Misfits, and Black Flag. Chris's guitar never sounded better ,and with Shane on drums ,we were pretty tight! Plese leave comments ,and let me know what you think of this great recording! Thanks! Great cover shot of The Draft House (blue roof) with the shitty ZOO ,next door!

ONE FELL SWOOP with STIMPY - Live -2/1/1992 -At The Draft House

A massive set by OFS ,maybe their longest set ,ever! 11 original songs (including several improv instros!) and 15 cover songs by : The Stooges,Misfits(3x),The Fall,Syd Barrett,Black Sabbath,Black Flag,38 Special,Molly Hatchet,Led Zeppelin(2x),Pink Floyd(2x), and the Flamin' Groovies! The show was not well-attended ,probably due to the fiasco from the night before (1/31/1992 ,see below ,somewhwere) ,when I dissed on the crowd's beloved, Nirvana ,and half the people walked out! Since we played with Stimpy opening ,we were able to use their horns on one number here, the only time OFS ever used horns! Stimpy was just Ed and Sean Burch (Monson) ,and maybe Shane Carwile ,on this recording ,their one and only live gig. Billy ,Shane, and Sean ,had to leave ,to secure a gig in a new alternative club ,up near Port Charlotte. The Stimpy tracks are just fab ,first pumping quarters into the jukebox and singing along to Pink Floyd ,Bryan Adams ,and Led Zeppelin,(with added drums and sax!) ,followed by some hilarious announcements ,and finally an original improv ,based on one of Sean's earlier pieces. He announces us as a Russian saxophone band ,with appropriate accents. Funny as hell! The OFS , is punk-rockin' fun as well ,and we cover a bunch of our influences ,and play our own songs we re-learned from the original cassette tapes.Fun times ,and more to come!!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Tales Of Desperate Survivors On The Edge Of Reality

A short 5-song e.p. ,due to the recording device fucking up on us ,but then turned into our recording device for the slowest band ever ,Quaalude! This really does contain what the title implies, songs that tell of extremely desperate people ,in survival situations.Shane Carwile plays trumpet(!!?!!) on much of this ,and Billy Drake and Sean Sommers also play and sing on thease tracks.Ed ,Joel ,and Chipmonk ,just keep the music flowing ,and spewing lyrics about characters we know ,like, Pukeboy & Subhuman ,Jimmy Cochran ,and riders of the Special Olympics Bus ,amongst others. There is only one more studio recording before the tapes go to live gig recordings. Cover painting by John Wilford. Recorded 1/14/1992 ,20 years ago today!!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Shake My Claw,Suzy Fink

The title has to do with a girl that had a claw hand.Ed,Joel, and Chipmonk were once again graced with Billy Drake's prescence ,as well as Shane Carwile ,Sean Sommers,Dave (antelope leaps?) ,and it sounds as if Katie Ball stops by ,and possibly Kristy and Zolan. Recorded in Joel's room at Cat Machine House 1/11/1992 ,straight to boombox! At some point near the end of this recording ,our recording device began going south. You can actually hear the tape slowing down and making sense of the closing number "I Have Lost All Of My Motor Skills". I think we recorded the band Quaalude(slowest band in history! found on this blog!) on the same recorder ,that day or the next ,after it was acting up.Also of note that day ,some workers were beating on Gramp's roof, and you can hear it on the tracks ,"Beat On The Roof" , "Arty Party" ,and "Crazy Ass White Boys" . The first half of this tape is 6 songs ,all college rock and indie-punk alt-rock stuff.I also must have had the mohawk up on this day as I act and sound like a barnyard bird on ,"Rooster" ,an act I would pull out from time to time ,when the fin was up! This is a really good and strange one. Dig it . And Suzy ,if you're out there ,I don't know you ,but sorry 'bout that album title!

BIG SATAN INC. - Tap And Die b/w Scarey Feet

From the Seattle grunge scene of 1987 -1992 ,this is from '92. Metal-soaked grunge riffs ,that will pound your head in! This is on Meat Records ,and the band is now kaput ,I suppose? The kind of shit Billy and Shane would be onto ,if they had heard it back then (or ,maybe now ,who knows?)

SLUGGISHA #1000 - THE 1000TH BLOG POST!!!!!

This is the 1000th post on this blog! Sluggisha Tapes started as an afterthought ,in 1990. There were local Ft. Myers ,FL bands in the mid to late 80's ,that started the Sluggisha asthetic. When Cat Machine ,and before them ,Myopia ,began their reign of underground terror ,the decision was made to start a mail order cassette label. We ("we" being myself,Joel and Tony Rizzo,Billy Drake,Shane Carwile ,Chipmonk, and others from our contingent) ,were recording so much ,and had so many spin-off bands going on all the time ,that we knew people had to hear it!The orders slowly trickled in (I met Food Fortunata around this point(a friend to this day) ,(who was doing the same thing as us),thru mail ordering cassettes from his vast catalog, and then I realized there were others like us,many, many, others!) ,I ran ads in Maximum Rock 'N Roll and Flipside ,and we flyered the town ,each time we had a gig.Cat Machine only played out live twice ,neither time were we recorded.Myopia played a whole mess of gigs ,and later One Fell Swoop had a residency as the house band (we broke open downtown ,for all the bands that followed) ,at The Draft House ,on Dean St. Even further down the road ,Sexboy took up residence there, and brought lots of out of town bands in to play with them.We had Salad Days (later to become reborn as The Indigo Room) ,and The Main St. Coffee House ,and Samskull moved his store ,Offbeat Records ,to the Patio DeLeon! We had local zines ,Rodent Cake ,Psychotic Episode ,Mad Asshole Digest ,and tons more ,many of which are ,or will eventually be ,posted at my other blog , Mediachrist.blogspot.com .We were young ,and drunk ,and having fun.Eventually in the late 90's ,I had to move away ,and the scene crumbled away.A few years ago ,I started the blog ,because I knew all my bandmates would wanna hear the old stuff ,and I was the only one who had the tapes ,so I began to chronicle our days as the kings of the underground scene ,in our small ,shitty ,town. This compilation has many unreleased tracks, live tracks, demos, unreleased ,and soon to be released ,and/or posted. There are 122 bands/songs ,almost 6 hours of fun! I unfortunately could not include every single band or artist on the label ,but I did a good job I think ,along with suggestions from friends and followers. This goes out to Gary and Rick at the Draft House , Cindy at The Coffee House ,Ralph at the Record Trader ,and all the fans and friends and bands ,and all the people we lost to death, jail, marriage, and long distance moves. We started out in the old days ,now everything is on the web ,these kids today got it easy ! Three zips in one file ,spans rock n roll ,punk , diy,alt-rock,indie,tardcore ,noise ,and just good 'ol music .The first pic above was the original logo ,as drawn by Steve Reed (I added the Sluggisha Presents ,and #1000). The one below it is the latest ,and it's on a t-shirt! Get yours today for $10 postage paid!!

BLACK NERD - Acoustic Backyard Jam

This is exactly what the title implies. Chipmonk was sadly missing from this tape. Billy and Shane ,play guitars ,Sean Burch/Monson plays bongos ,and some guitar and vocals. Recorded live on 4/5/1992 in Sean's backyard.Definitely cult , and there was a fanzine (the cover of which is reproduced above!) ,of unknown origin , that was printed in a ltd. edition of 13 copies(!), dedicated to this band ,posted  over at my other blog  . There is also a great live at the Draft House recording ,located elsewhere on this blog. This must have been fun for the participants ,as it is fun to listen to. Do an eight-niner ,and sink into this atmospheric set of tunes.

CAT MACHINE - Fag Bar -Rehearsals For Visions Gig -May 1991

A full rehearsal of the entire set list ,give or take a coupla numbers. All 4 boys,Ed,Joel,Tony, and Chipmonk ,are in prime form,on this practice session.Only one gig at Visions, and we were done with that establishment,as the owners said we were too loud.As the title reveals,we played at a gay bar,on their grand opening ,in fact.No live tapes from gigs have ever surfaced,so this is as live as it gets, along with the other rehearsal tapes.Of course Cat Machine opened for the great Myopia, who was Tony,Billy and Shane.Myopia played a small string of dates,at Visions.

CAT MACHINE -Tooth Breath Spewdom Not Sneeze

Don't know about that title, but the music is fine!Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk, and special guests,Shane Carwile, and Billy Drake,on 2/16/1991,in the FTM.Really good tunes here include: "Song For Billy To Sing", "Song For Billy To Sing Again",(Billy never actually sings,or utters a word for that matter,on either of these tracks) ,"Gettin' The Gumption" ,"Suicidal Ballerina Blues" , "The Strangled Penguin's Chrome Glider Dream" , "Accidental Toaster","90 Cups Of Coffee An Hour",and "Cowering Spastics".The whole thing is great altogether,I'm just pointing out some highlights,or lowlights,as the case may be.The 26th release from this obtuse,outsider,unknown,undiscovered,cult-band,from Ft.Myers,Florida,80's thru 90's.Keep following their path to eventual destruction,in the rest of this year-long series, more coming soon!

CAT MAC HINE - Keep Out Period

Title comes from,I think a sign on Gramp's door.2/12/1991 .Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk with special guests ,Shane Carwile and Mason.Once again,Chipmonk steals the spot light ,especially on 3 in a row hits ,"Mortgage Balloon", Choppin' Block" ,and "Molotov Chain Cow".He also has a few more great moments like ,"Chisel Face Polio Nun".Cover of the Kinks,"You Really Got Me".Topical tale about Tony,on ,"Stimey Can't Party No Mo",funny story on ,"He Wore A Tie To Woodshop".

CAT MACHINE- Beware The Cord!

On 1/26/91,the core of the group,Ed,Tony, and Joel, with newest member ,Chipmonk, were joined by special guests Billy Drake, and Shane Carwile,to produce this, their 20th release! This is where they began to number the tapes,as they were over-prolific in their recording schedule. The title comes from a warning issued at this session, because they were using a power cord with a short in it,and if you even touched it,it would ruin the recording.Anyway ,some great songs are unearthed here: "Wheels Of Terror","Return Of The Redeye","Trinkets Of Cloud",in it's 1st appearance (Chipmonk's centerpiece),"Design For Living","The Sweet Smell Of Justice",an acapella number entitled,"Die ,Bobby McFerrin,Die!(Don't Worry,Go Fuck Yourself!)",a cover tune from a hit children's film,"Theme Of Milo & Otis" ,"Road Block","One Nitemare Stand" ,"Girl In The Picture" ,and the story of,"The Machine".I could go on,but let me just say, that at this point, the boys were gaining quite a cohesive sound, that would stick with them till the end.We are not quite halfway done with this year-long series,in which everything ever recorded by this underground,outsider,cult-band,will be posted!!Stay tuned for the rest!

CAT MACHINE - Potsie Rimjob

Bet you thought the album title from the last Cat Machine album I posted was gross! This one is a very close second.Ed , Tony, and Joel (who joined in on side 2),with special guests,Billy Drake,Shane Carwile,Sean Sommers, and Dave "Antelope Leaps",which is a whole other story. The first appearance of,"Rainbow Shower" (a live staple),pieces about local scenesters, specifically Joe Willa, and Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown, and Sean doing an annoying Rollins impression,on a cover of,"We Have Come To Kill You".Pretty good show, here,I somehow fit it all in one zip this time!

CAT MACHINE -Tackled With Relish

Another great one from the boys ,with special guests,Billy Drake, and Shane Carwile.Covers of Public Enemy,Black Flag, and "Cool",from West Side Story.Scallop Feet is here as well as Anesthetic,Inside The Core,You Kids,Monkey In My Lunch Pail, and other fine songs. As usual, the tape ends off with everyone reading from something different at the same time,it's amazing how everything fits together sometimes.

CAT MACHINE - Suburban Carambola

Ed,Joel,And Tony, are in full force here, with special guests,Billy Drake,And Shane Carwile. The best versions of," Are These Our Children" ,and a few new tunes,at this session,"Vexed",and "Video Christ",all of which were live staples.Another cover of Pink Floyd's ,"The Nile Song" , also a funny number ends off side one ,"Jelly Bull On The Side Of A Muddy Mountain".An early version of "Theme Of Milo & Otis",from the film soundtrack, appears here, only to be re-done,10 tapes down the road, when Billy actually figured out how to play the full song!Another version of,"Queen Turd Of Shit Hill",surfaces, and there are some of our most crude lyrics on,"Roughly Speaking",and "My Encyclopedia Of Bad Taste".The version of,"Rapist With Aids",on this document,is positively hardcore!Ending with another,"everyone read something different ,at the same time",type of numbers, entitled,"The Real Garbage".There are a wealth of swell songs on this one, part of the continuing ,year-long series, where I will be posting everything ever recorded by these underground legends! This is from 12/15/1990,live ,straight to boom box,or ,"suburb blaster",(which is more fitting, due to album title, and the fact that we were in the suburbs!),at Cat Machine house.   https://sluggishatapes.bandcamp.com/album/cat-machine-suburban-carambola

CAT MACHINE - Unplugged !

Live from Tony's room,11/10/90,recorded between midnite and 3 a.m.,with special guests ,Billy Drake,Shane Carwile,Katie Ball, and Christian Vic,(who showed up towards the end ,and crashed on the couch).Ed and Joel, the other 2/3rds of the core, were also in attendance. An acoustic outing, using guitar, pipes, and flutes, sampling, all manners of percussion, and some of the weirdest lyrics, this side of the pail.About the last 2o minutes is Ed,with an acoustic guitar, spitting stream of conciousness, free style words,to an audience of sleeping participants,to his humor, and their discontent.Funny as hell, and a few songs stand out,Tony's centerpiece,"Another One Drink",which he wrote, everyone singing in unison on,"Lost My Mind For A Moment(Fuck Magic Bus)",a totally different from the previous version,"Crude Being Made Flesh",and a cover of B.T.O.'S ,"Takin' Care Of Business",which sounds like drunken derelicts behind a dumpster. The rest of the tunes defy description, only to say they sound like Cat Machine, leaves much to the imagination. Not their usual sound, tho' they did use acoustic styles on the song,"When The Apeman Smiles",on a later studio tape,to great effect,as well as the tune,"Treehouse" on another later recording, but never before or since ,have they performed a whole tape acoustically. This was right around the time mtv was starting their Unplugged series,so we ran with it.Folky, punky, bluesy, and Shane does a drum solo,on an improvised drum set! This is worth your while, you will be amused, and looking forward to the next tape, dated 11/28/90,just after Thanksgiving!

MYOPIA-live at the draft house-the final show

I finally got a RCA Y-plug to upload this. All the sound was on one side, now in glorious fake stereo.Don't know where this show was mic'ed at,but sometimes the drums and vox are the loudest.Tony,Billy,Shane, and (as Pat Smear joining Nirvana)Ron Bohn. This was a historic event,if you were there, you are lucky to have witnessed Myopia live!As always very rare stuff, this is the only known copy.covers of Big Black,Angry Samoans, and almost The Fall(at which point the tape ran out, damn!),as well as that trademarked Myopia groove.Tony ,please fill us in with more info,I don't know the date, was there a flyer?

MYOPIA-burning eye crown

This is some lost tape that Shane gave me ,when we were recording the band,FUCK.Not sure of the origin or the year or place, maybe Tony can fill us in.Sounds quite early on,to these ears.only 6 tracks, most of the sound goes to one side, there is a muffled drop-out in the 1st song, but it's relatively smooth sailing from there.Noisy psych/pop/punk,that should have seen vinyl. One of the best bands from the Ft. Myers scene.Art and title by Gray Meatballs. The tape has other stuff on it too,not sure what it is,but it 's a mess,to be sure. One of the most downloaded bands on this blog, this is very rare,as are any Myopia releases.

once again the slowest doom band ever, period, end of story!this version of quaalude is me,joel, chipmunk, billy, shane, and sean sommers, and is all on one speaker, sorry,we did'nt even know the tape was recording so fast,so in playback it was super mega slow,so how were we to know it would only record on one speaker?we did'nt.some fine trumpet playing by shane on."lower east mexico,ft.myers" and some scary vocals on the 4th and final track.this was actually recorded minutes before the other quaalude tape(look on this blog for it!) and has shorter songs.pretty industrial and spooky.check it out.baroque dub by tardly friends

APOCALYPTIC CENTURIONS

This is the first recording ever of the Apocalyptic Centurions. The band was me,Joel Rizzo,Chipmunk,Shane Carwile, and for some unknown reason,Nicholas Dunphee. Some things on here soon changed with the advent of the coming of the reign of the Apocalyptic Centurions. For one, there are some keyboards,a no-no in the greatest guitar orchestra of all time.Second, there are some vocals, next, actual formed songs, finally ,the appearance of Dunphee. When the live shows began, all this went into the trash,so we could be a fully instrumental, all guitar orchestra (with an ever-shifting line-up of guys with guitars ,eager to sign up for the cause!),and of course drums.Chipmunk and I both sing a little, mostly instrumental, with a foreshadowing of the trademark Centurions sound,of guitar noise and feedback, kinda Branca-like in parts. The only studio recording, made in the spacious living room of the old Cat Machine house. And it all began with the picture above,I saw it in Joel's room and said something like,"witness the rise of the almighty Apocalyptic Centurions!"and a new band was spawned!
