THE GOLDEN THROWN - Majestick,Rejected

My pal ,Tony Rizzo,co-founder of Cat Machine,and member of many Sluggisha bands,with his latest project! I'll let him elaborate further!

Picking up where The Phantom Third left off, we find Tony Rizzo (founding member of The Mighty Cat Machine, and veteran of countless Sluggisha bands) in Chicago, where he answers an ad for a band to share the bill at a local bar, and gets selected based on the decade old demos of TP3.
  Hustling to get a band together, he recruits co-workers Alex Insco and Jason Sneed, on drums and bass respectively. Crash course in learning a sets' worth of songs. 
   After that one gig, the rhythm section decided it wasn't their cup of tea...despite the fact that other gigs were on the horizon. SO, he brought in Jamie Kallend (who could often be spotted outside of gigs, scouring the gutter for cigarette butts) on bass, and Jason Dolan took over the drum stool. (having never really played in a BAND, before)
   On the eve of a gig set to open for Mugen Hoso, from Tokyo, Jamie says he has class, and we should just not take the gig, if we can't all be there. Tony and Jason say to hell with that nonsense, and played the show as a POWERDUO, and stayed that way, playing several shows in and around Chicago, til Jason moved to New Mexico.
   TGT became totally cohesive, and after one failed attempt at recruiting a bassist (he played well, but annoyed the HELL out of them), never looked back. Sadly, the best recordings they had are trapped on an mp3 player that refuses to respond to, or recognize ANY computer. Also, the display on it got jacked up, so hard to even pinpoint where the best material is.
   Known to cover REM (mainly Monster-era deep cuts), Adam & the Ants,Stooges, and AC/DC (once had a full bar crowd shouting the OI! OI! OI! part on 'TNT'!!!)
 Also culled tracks from several Sluggisha acts, like Myopia, OrangeClawHammer, and Boneshaker.
   Always recorded live, whether to cassette, phone, or MP3--The Golden Thrown were loose, loud, raw and ROCK. or, as Tony dubbed it: dirtypopartpunkfuzzrock

CAT MACHINE - Power Trio

Around this time ,in Cat Machine's history,Tony and Myopia had just finished up their string of gigs at Visions,and Tony was in the pokey for a month or two.So Ed,Joel,and Chipmonk ,carried on as usual ,this is live to boombox,with great sound! Once again,as with "New Thing" ,a few tapes back ,this is kinda the germination of the splinter band ,One Fell Swoop.New versions of ,"Peddler of Pencils" (2x) ,"Land Of Faraway" ,and "Slim Jim Blues" ,as well as a bunch of awe-inspiring experimental stuff,that will blow your doors off!There's only about a half dozen tapes left in this series! All 4-track studio stuff,(with the noticibly missing Tony,on about half of the tapes)except the last tape,which is a rehearsal for a gig that fell thru, at Serena's ,a shitty rock club in shitty Cape Coral. So stay tuned for the rest of this tape series,scattered thru the next coupla months,sporadically,posting on the original release dates,20 years to the date! This was recorded on May 28th,1991.

CAT MACHINE - Dude! ,That's Penis! a/k/a Live At Gramps's -May 1991

A short rehearsal of 4 tunes,(each member sings one) , opening for Myopia ,on this tape,(Myopia's set is here: http://sluggisha.blogspot.com/2008/11/m-y-o-p-i.html ),as well as live.One of the few tapes with a real drum set,as we usually resorted to drum machines,and other more primitive percussion. I don't know if I ever went into the meaning of the title, so,here goes: Ashey moved between Massachussetts and Florida a few times.Once ,upon his return,he was using the phrase ,"Dude! ,that's penis!" ,which he said meant ,"cool" ,up in MA. We just rolled about,and laughed,and used it for a tape title,which was the usual progression of a catchphrase,at least in Cat Machine's world.

CAT MACHINE - Fag Bar -Rehearsals For Visions Gig -May 1991

A full rehearsal of the entire set list ,give or take a coupla numbers.All 4 boys,Ed,Joel,Tony,and Chipmonk ,are in prime form,on this practice session.Only one gig at Visions,and we were done with that establishment,as the owners said we were too loud.As the title reveals,we played at a gay bar,on their grand opening ,in fact.No live tapes from gigs have ever surfaced,so this is as live as it gets,along with the other rehearsal tapes.Of course Cat Machine opened for the great Myopia,who was Tony,Billy and Shane.Myopia played a small string of dates,at Visions.

CAT MACHINE - 3 Dead Boids

From October of 1990,let the journey continue!The next piece of the series was just the core of Ed J.,Joel Rizzo,and his brother Tony.Recorded 1,2,3,-go! style,into a boombox,there are new versions of previously recorded songs,a whole slew of new tunes,and the last 6 tracks are ,stupendously amazing.Starting to get really good here,as a band goes.You can almost see the twinkling of the stars,destined to be Cat Machine.Myopia is covered here,twice.Another version of, Crazy Mary,and Queen Turd Of Shit Hill,this is a great document,of a great day in Cat Machine history.Stay tuned for more of this series,as the boys stumble towards nothing.

MYOPIA-live at the draft house-the final show

I finally got a RCA Y-plug to upload this.All the sound was on one side,now in glorious fake stereo.Don't know where this show was mic'ed at,but sometimes the drums and vox are the loudest.Tony,Billy,Shane,and (as Pat Smear joining Nirvana)Ron Bohn.This was a historic event,if you were there,you are lucky to have witnessed Myopia live!As always very rare stuff,this is the only known copy.covers of Big Black,Angry Samoans,and almost The Fall(at which point the tape ran out,damn!),as well as that trademarked Myopia groove.Tony ,please fill us in with more info,I don't know the date,was there a flyer?

MYOPIA-burning eye crown

This is some lost tape that Shane gave me ,when we were recording the band,FUCK.Not sure of the origin or the year or place,maybe Tony can fill us in.Sounds quite early on,to these ears.only 6 tracks,most of the sound goes to one side,there is a muffled drop-out in the 1st song,but it's relatively smooth sailing from there.Noisy psych/pop/punk,that should have seen vinyl.One of the best bands from the Ft. Myers scene.Art and title by Gray Meatballs.The tape has other stuff on it too,not sure what it is,but it 's a mess,to be sure.One of the most downloaded bands on this blog,this is very rare,as are any Myopia releases.

WHAT WENT WRONG-everything and anything

a great unheard quartet from the brain fried region of tuscon,az.the intro tape manipulations are more effective with the cassette.just fine rockin' tunes and weird experimental stuff mixed in.the second half gets more adventurous and instrumental.the band is:gob awful-bass,michael henderson-guitar/vocals,melvin beastly-vocals/keys,and rat shit-drums/keys/guitars/vocals.from the glorious year of 1989,this is a classic ,20 years old!hopefully joel will give more info in the comments,as this came from his astounding collection of rarely heard bands.thanks joel!P.S.the original tape had no cover,just track lists.alt-punk,almost always reminds me of sluggisha's own cat machine and myopia,at various points.

CRUCIAL FICTION -- X-ED +myopia!super bonus!

squeaky's free,and this comes to sluggisha from the vaults on the same day!another of tony's solo outings,made over the course of a few years,this is more lo-fi,lots of uncredited covers,lots of alternate and different interpretations of several myopia tunes,and there are bonus myopia tracks at the end,along with art and the original track listings,by tony.reminds me slightly of matty luv's(r.i.p.),of hickey and f- boyz fame,solo project called,"yogurt",a few tapes of which can be found at:cosmichearse.blogspot.com,tell em' i sent you!but back to tony,great stuff here,he talks sometimes about when he lost his mind and alien abductions ,etc.,this tape here probably summoned the extraterrestrials to earth to procure young anthony ,to pick his genius mind.i could listen to this daily,i shit you not,very interesting and exciting music to be found inside.G O D.

THE PHANTOM THIRD-tp3

this is a solo release from tony rizzo,practically the vice president of sluggisha,with dues paid in many ft.myers bands dating back before the advent of the sluggisha label and into the new wave of artists,and instruments dutifully played.this project is now known as,'the mordrakes',and has a myspace page,but tony says he may revert back to this original moniker.this is tony in a pensive and pop mood,more relaxed and mellower than anything else he's done.there is a coupla times here he covers himself,from myopia songs to a boneshaker/stonehenge mouth number,and does it all alone,with no guest spots,except snuffleupagus on the final track.all art in zip and above by tony.next up: another solo turn by tony as"crucial fiction".stay tuned for that,in the meantime ,grab this and leave tony a comment,thanks! take some myopia,add a little kike,stir in some centrifuge,you got you some BONESHAKER!.tony ,ron bohn,and vance,are psychin- out on this awesome release.several instrumentals litter up the joint a bit,but rock none the less.great covers of the birthday party and dead or alive,as well as a stonehenge mouth number.tony is in top form lyrically,vocally,and instrumentally.vance is the steady anchor as always,and ron,while not in many sluggisha bands,holds his own here.there may be more tracks missing,as with kike and centrifuge,i need vance to get in touch with me,cuz he may have the lost sluggisha archives treasure chest(we all hope!)sometimes obtuse,other times ,shades of pop,this is a band to be reckoned with.art by tony and hopefully he'll leave some more notes about boneshaker in the comments!G O D.

the FT.MYERS underground

this is a relic.dating before sluggisha,cat machine,and me,this is the first tape joel gave me when we met,and i'm glad he did.probably the only copy of this material in the world,featuring some great bands and solo artists,some of my top ten fave songs of all time(orange claw hammer -three ring girl,and real meat-sex with liza/junkfood pothead)and a general all around good feeling.also some myopia tracks that date to the conception ,i believe.?some scene stalwarts here as nathan adams,the rizzo bros.,and steve(gag-penthouse)all make appearances.a great compilation,that always makes me smile to hear it.tony can fill you in on more history in the comments box below.thanks tony,joel and everyone in the old scene.this proves we rule. Here they are once again,back to bring you no hope whatsoever,the darlings of the Lee County underground,MYOPIA! Live at Ashey's on Thanksgiving 1991.Ashey sings on "Up All Nite" ,the classic Antiseen song!.Tune into Ashey's radio show,"The Late Riser's Club"on Mondays at 10 a.m.0n WMBR 88.1,Cambridge,Mass.He plays classic punk and h.c.and lots more.He's played Sluggisha stuff before on air and says he'll be playing more.

Yes boys and girls, Myopia one of the greatest unheard bands ever,before grunge rock hit it's stride these guys were bashin out tunes you need to hear before you die.Tony Rizzo on bass vocals and writing ,Billy Drake on guitars and Shane Carwile on drums.Just young guys ,teens in fact at their induction.this is "Live At Gramps's" a/k/a "Dude,That's Penis!
