ONE FELL SWOOP with BLACK NERD - Live at the Draft House 1/31/1992

This is a re-post of a previously posted tape.(back in 2009) This time I give you the flyer for the actual show ,with our original logo and mascot(see above, duh!),plus Billy and Shane were at the Edison Mall ,handing out flyers to the show ,and Dave from Wendy's ,was on a book signing tour ,and Billy handed him a flyer ,which he then placed on the table in front of him.It can be seen in the pic above ,which was on the front page of our local ,Ft. Myers News-Press newspaper! How's that for publicity? The following is from the original posting ,where all is explained!:

Me,Joel and Chipmunk,in our little alt-rock trio,me and Chip on guitars,Joel on drums, except when he sings,me on drums,we all sing, mostly me.i wrote the lyrics and we cover,Flamin'Groovies, the Fall,Syd Barrett,Hendrix,Stooges,Sonic Youth,Led Zeppelin, and Black Flag.Kinda Electric Eels style,no bass, just guitars.we sound much different live, with a real drum kit, instead of our usual kit(see other One Fell Swoop posts for details)and the flyer on the other post is for this show ,the flyer on this post is for a show a week later,Black Nerd opened for us(re-posted below!),and we had a big crowd of locals who were rather pissed at my intro to"Red Letter Day"when i razz Nirvana for their sell out video(smells like...)on mtv at the time, lots of folks walked out after i make my comments,oh well, they missed the rest of a hell of a good show!We aquired a residence as the house band at the Draft House for some time after this.I was the one who got them to let us play and start a scene in our crappy little town.Kinda busted open the floodgates for a million embryo alt rock bands and punks to play and hang out, before that downtown was just drunken bums hangin at the bar.Lots more live tapes to come. The first track is an improv, which we usually used to apply to a regular set list,we'd always do a few improv jams.A fine document of a fantastic band, stay tuned for more! The flyer also lists the next show to be posted ,from 2/1/1992 ,with Stimpy!! Coming soon!

ONE FELL SWOOP - First Gig Practice Tape

This is a re-post of the practice for the first One Fell Swoop gig!(originally posted May 7,2010).
Recorded live, 1/23/1992,(20 years ago ,today!), at Gramps, the Cat Machine house, and the typewriter case, pizza pan drum rim, hammer and pliers drumset is in full-effect.The first half is originals, the second half we cover: the Flamin' Groovies(twice), the Fall, Hendrix(2 hits), and Kiss. The between song banter is good for a few guffaws, and we were still re-learning these songs, picked from several sessions. Good for what it is. The song," I Need Cash",swipes a Kike riff! The first gig led to a residency as the "house" band of the Draft House, (for a few months), we actually cracked downtown wide open ,bringing in opening acts ,and making a place for kids to hang out ,and see and hear local and out-of-area bands. Before that ,there wasn't really any venues for punk/alternative bands to play. Art by Eric J. This has been posted for nearly 2 years ,and only 10 downloads? Well ,now that I've fit it into the sequence of tapes ,posted in order of their recording dates ,maybe more of you will get to hear this!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Total Odgena

A concept album about a kid,(pictured above), from Anywhere U.S.A., traveling to Seattle ,to become a grunge star ,after seeing Nirvana's ,"Smells Like Teen Spirit" ,on MTV. Much like Husker Du's conceptual double LP ,"Zen Arcade" , each song takes you thru a different part of the kid's journey. I'll give you the play-by-play ,because this story is so cool!
1.A Good Question - the album starts off with this instrumental ,the kid asking himself if fleeing to Seattle is a good idea.
2.The Incorrect Time - the perils of traveling into another time zone ,east to west.
3.Egypt Silt Went Goo - the crappy ,rainy conditions in Seattle ,do nothing to preserve valuables
4.Ask Northwest Dio - the kid comes upon a street dweller ,a homeless Dio-looking character ,who he asks about the local music scene.
5.Missing Women - the kid learns of The Green River Killer's exploits.
6.Socially Correct? - The kid questions if the grunge scene is too PC for his tastes.
7.If 6 Was 9 (Jimi Hendrix) - the evironment has changed his mind-set,and the kid writes an original song ,starts a little band, and plays out live.
8.Today Your Love,Tomorrow The World (Ramones) - the kid and his band , Total Odgena ,become overnight stars
9.Teenage Head (The Flamin' Groovies) - The basic autobiography of the kid ,up till now.
10.Chirping Psycho-Babble - the kid meets and dates a crazy grunge groupie, and has to listen to her bitching ,whining ,moaning, and complaining.
11.American Woman (The Guess Who) - The kid meets some canadians ,who have crossed the border ,also to find fame ,but find the scene and the annoying grunge girls ,too much for them to deal with , and they persuade the kid into dumping his squawky big bird girlfriend.
12.Smells Like Beans Near It - the kid becomes quickly disillusioned with the scene ,after a review of his song ,and the whole grunge scene ,is scathingly reviewed in a local music rag.
13.Fresca Chase - the kid gathers up his few belongings ,and with his last few dollars ,buys a cheap bottle of booze ,to drown his memories.
14.Colombus Was A Nazi - "America is facist"! ,thinks the kid to himself ,wondering why he can't get accepted into the social norms.
15.The World For Ransom - grunge music takes over the pop and metal charts ,leaving people scratching their heads in disbelief.
16.La Comparsa - the kid compares his life before and after grunge music ,in this re-hash of the Candy Butcher's tune ,"Crummy Turkey"
17.Sweater Heads - people the world over are blinded by the hype of grunge ,every band thinks they will move to Seattle and be stars.
18.Forget Stride - the kid realizes that this music scene ,really has no leg to stand on ,as more bands are signed to major labels ,and many videos are put into heavy rotation on the video networks.
19.A Good Answer - closing out with another instrumental ,and the reality of heading back to where he came from , and how lame an idea it was to even come out here ,to become a junkie/rock star ,like his idols.

Total Odgena means "bad heartburn" ,by the way . Pass the TUMS! This is kinda based on the true story of friends of ours from Ft. Myers ,who fled to Seattle to try and be scenesters ,and launch their bands. They all came back home ,eventually. Which is the basic message of this album , you'll always end up back where you first started. One of the best and most cohesive OFS albums up till this point ,with great tunes ,awesome lyrics and vocals ,weird samples in between some songs ,and the whole conceptual story line. Our live set list sometimes included the Hendrix and Groovies songs. Recorded 20 years ago today! 11/5/1991

SUPERCREEP

this is tardcore by sheer virtue of acid addled brain damage.richard martin on vox, brian reed drums, dave on bass, dug boone guitar, and steve reed guitar.they all play everything and switch up on vocals sometimes.i also hear keys and harmonica at points.most of this sounds like the recording style of the original old black bluesmen, and some lyrics and tunes have that downtrodden bluesy feel.richard is quite a character.some of his vocals are reminiscent of g.g.allin or sam kinison.and according to the song ,"richard's lament","he looks like sam kinison ,on a bad day, without his make-up on".features the worst covers you'll ever hear of u2's"sunday bloody sunday",and ac/dc's"highway to hell".funnier than hell!the longest ,and final track"we're orcs!",is uncharacteristic of the rest of the tape, and should be a college rock hit!there are some instrumental jams sprinkled in,and these guys thank the grateful dead and phish and hendrix in their liner notes.kinda like a tardcore mix of those artists.broken into 2 files ,as it was long.punks who became deadheads, this is punk!vive le' tardcore!

BUGHEAD-vol 3

hey,it's brophy on drums again, nathan adams on guitar and lead vocals, and jason powell ,bass and vocals.they had an orlando connection.kinda funky like hendix meets lenny kravitz(oh yeah, they're the same person, right?),with one track revisiting their ska roots.yes,i think they started as a ska band, and as that market overflowed into the sewer, they swtched up to this funky sound.reminds me of early 70's funk rock bands.the last track is almost reminiscent of a ween cut-out with it's falsetto vocals.pretty professional sound as well, far beyond sluggisha standards.i don't know what became of vols. 1,2 or anything after 3,i've never heard 'em.click here :http://www.mediafire.com/file/mcwiwigzzmo/bughead.zip
