THE JACKIE EARLE HALEYS - The Unreleased Tapes

Dug up some stuff from the vault.I was supposed to release this last year at this time,as there was a song to be pulled from this session,(our last full recording, recorded, mixed ,mastered and put to cassette ,all in one night!),that was slated for the 100 band compilation ,"Big Tit Hoagie" ,which has still not got it's shit together ,and gotten released yet, sheesh! Myself was on vocals, lyrics, and drums, mostly, maybe a little guitar as well.Billy Drake, did all lead guitars, and was/is the greatest guitarist I've ever known.Even though this band was based on 70's bands like T.Rex,Sweet,Kiss,Slade, and other rock and hard rock bands,Billy was as knowlegeable at  70's rock as he was at psych, folk, flamenco, grunge, and any other style you may want to mention. As well as being a multi-instrumentalist,as most all of us were in the close-knit Ft. Myers scene.Vance Burdge ,my best pal,is on bass, and some guitars as well.He did the recordings thru an analog 4-track cassette recorder, the same kind of old machinery that I still use til this day.Vance also mixed this stuff ,I believe,It may have been me,we both would do those duties, sometimes both of us would do our own mix,so there would be different versions /mixes ,of the songs.Vance is one of the most talented musicians I know of,multi-instrumental,plus studio ,mix, master, recording know-how.Anyway,back to these recordings,10 tracks of 70's styled rock, although we were getting a little bit too far away from home here, straying off into ballads,blues,funk,southern-rock,a cover of a Supersuckers tune, and a handful of tunes that both musically and lyrically, hearken back to our beginnings. When the band started it was just me and Vance.Billy joined ,eventually ,because he was usually hanging out while Vance and I were writing songs. At one point ,we had a full -line-up adding Mike Smith on drums, and recorded 3 practice sessions,2 of which I have, and need to upload. The first Haleys release was cobbled together from almost every tape session we recorded. There were many songs left off,and there will be a new compilation posted here, soon,as well as those live sessions. We were practicing so we could play gigs, but our drummer didn't really like the "rock and roll" sound of the band and left soon after. We never played live, but Vance and I did acoustic versions of a couple Haleys tracks at an open mic night at The Draft House in downtown Ft. Myers, back when it was a shit hole, and not all glitzy and glamorous like today. We did record one more song after this session, our last tune is called ,"(I Wanna Be A) Busboy",and is on the first compilation ,found elsewhere on this blog,if you want to hear the sound of a band making it happen, even in the face of breaking up.There's more to come, don't be sad. This isn't our best work, but it still ranks up there .

WHORESHACK - LIVE! AT THE MAIN STREET COFFEE HOUSE ,FT. MYERS ,FLORIDA

The first and last ever ,live gig by Whoreshack. We were third choice openers since the band Deadbone ,who was originally scheduled to open ,had their drummer die on them ,the second choice opening band ,Turd Thermos ,were all school kids ,who could'nt play because they got caught skipping school ,and most of the band was grounded. So we opened for Conveyor and Big Bong Theory ,thoroughly trashing the audience with our huge cocks! We were a hard act to follow ,baiting the audience with an almost Fear-like venom!A few covers ,mixed in with all original improv instrumentals ,and the hit song ,"Not Come Down". There was fun in the air ,as it was Labor Day Weekend 1993 ,and the boys were crankin' out this slop ,to an undeserving audience.Fuck them! Now you can experience the madness ,without actually having to stand in a room full of slackers, losers, and smelly crust punks and dead heads! This is the shit! Vance played drums ,since original drummer,Mike Smith, was home sleeping!

WHORESHACK - s/t debut

In light of the recent passing of Ron Palillo ,a/k/a Horshack ,I am posting the last few Whoreshack releases. This is the debut tape ,recorded live at The Bakery ,March 13,1993. Ed handles guitar and vocals,Billy on guitar, and Mike on drums.Mostly experimental instrumentals ,Whoreshack was the local version of the Ventures (if they were raised on punk rock ,and started their group in the 1990's)I've posted all the tapes ,backwards to forwards ,from the 6th release ,to this first one here. The post above this ,is actually the final recording ,of their first ever ,and last ever ,live gig ,recorded after the 6th release (The Zipper) ,and with Vance on drums ,in lieu of Mike. But more on that later. This is an amazing start ,to a short -lived band ,which never really got their due,in the time of their existence. I can't really say too much more ,except , let the music do the talking!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Live! At The Draft House ,Downtown Ft.Myers ,Florida 2/26/1992

I found a lost live recording in the vault! This is a really good one! Our last gig ever ,at the Draft House ,Joel ,our defacto drummer ,had a broken arm ,so he was relegated to keys and also did vocals on a few numbers.Shane Carwile was beating the skins ,Chipmonk and I were on guitars ,and Billy Drake plays guitar on a number with Sean Burch on vocals! The last track is the very first time FUCK (the terror rock band with Mad Asshole-bass vox,Big Black Cock -guitar ,and Shaggy Dick -drums) ever played together ,with a totally improv number ,"You".They later recorded several sessions together, and toured Europe. But back to OFS! Different versions of all their set list ,all their usual covers ,and some improv instrumentals. New covers we never played before include ,Wire's "12XU" ,KISS "Rock N' Roll All Night" and Cat Machine "Queen Turd Of Shit Hill"!And the usual covers of The Fall ,The Flamin' Groovies ,The Beat Happening,Syd Barrett,Pink Floyd, the Stooges ,Misfits, and Black Flag. Chris's guitar never sounded better ,and with Shane on drums ,we were pretty tight! Plese leave comments ,and let me know what you think of this great recording! Thanks! Great cover shot of The Draft House (blue roof) with the shitty ZOO ,next door!

ONE FELL SWOOP with STIMPY - Live -2/1/1992 -At The Draft House

A massive set by OFS ,maybe their longest set ,ever! 11 original songs (including several improv instros!) and 15 cover songs by : The Stooges,Misfits(3x),The Fall,Syd Barrett,Black Sabbath,Black Flag,38 Special,Molly Hatchet,Led Zeppelin(2x),Pink Floyd(2x), and the Flamin' Groovies! The show was not well-attended ,probably due to the fiasco from the night before (1/31/1992 ,see below ,somewhwere) ,when I dissed on the crowd's beloved, Nirvana ,and half the people walked out! Since we played with Stimpy opening ,we were able to use their horns on one number here, the only time OFS ever used horns! Stimpy was just Ed and Sean Burch (Monson) ,and maybe Shane Carwile ,on this recording ,their one and only live gig. Billy ,Shane, and Sean ,had to leave ,to secure a gig in a new alternative club ,up near Port Charlotte. The Stimpy tracks are just fab ,first pumping quarters into the jukebox and singing along to Pink Floyd ,Bryan Adams ,and Led Zeppelin,(with added drums and sax!) ,followed by some hilarious announcements ,and finally an original improv ,based on one of Sean's earlier pieces. He announces us as a Russian saxophone band ,with appropriate accents. Funny as hell! The OFS , is punk-rockin' fun as well ,and we cover a bunch of our influences ,and play our own songs we re-learned from the original cassette tapes.Fun times ,and more to come!!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Tales Of Desperate Survivors On The Edge Of Reality

A short 5-song e.p. ,due to the recording device fucking up on us ,but then turned into our recording device for the slowest band ever ,Quaalude! This really does contain what the title implies, songs that tell of extremely desperate people ,in survival situations.Shane Carwile plays trumpet(!!?!!) on much of this ,and Billy Drake and Sean Sommers also play and sing on thease tracks.Ed ,Joel ,and Chipmonk ,just keep the music flowing ,and spewing lyrics about characters we know ,like, Pukeboy & Subhuman ,Jimmy Cochran ,and riders of the Special Olympics Bus ,amongst others. There is only one more studio recording before the tapes go to live gig recordings. Cover painting by John Wilford. Recorded 1/14/1992 ,20 years ago today!!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Shake My Claw,Suzy Fink

The title has to do with a girl that had a claw hand.Ed,Joel, and Chipmonk were once again graced with Billy Drake's prescence ,as well as Shane Carwile ,Sean Sommers,Dave (antelope leaps?) ,and it sounds as if Katie Ball stops by ,and possibly Kristy and Zolan. Recorded in Joel's room at Cat Machine House 1/11/1992 ,straight to boombox! At some point near the end of this recording ,our recording device began going south. You can actually hear the tape slowing down and making sense of the closing number "I Have Lost All Of My Motor Skills". I think we recorded the band Quaalude(slowest band in history! found on this blog!) on the same recorder ,that day or the next ,after it was acting up.Also of note that day ,some workers were beating on Gramp's roof, and you can hear it on the tracks ,"Beat On The Roof" , "Arty Party" ,and "Crazy Ass White Boys" . The first half of this tape is 6 songs ,all college rock and indie-punk alt-rock stuff.I also must have had the mohawk up on this day as I act and sound like a barnyard bird on ,"Rooster" ,an act I would pull out from time to time ,when the fin was up! This is a really good and strange one. Dig it . And Suzy ,if you're out there ,I don't know you ,but sorry 'bout that album title!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Drinkin', Fartin', And Fondlin' Ladies

The underground sensation's 30th album!! As on the last release ,Billy Drake is back to fill in the empty spots in these recordings ,with his magical axe.As for the album title? Well ,that's what we were doing ,the day we recorded this fine piece of musical jerky. Some real mess we got ,here! I gotta say ,the keyboard /guitar interaction on the instrumental ,"Drug Island" ,is positively ear-piercing! Nine tracks of alt-rock,indie-punk ,college music ,that will twist your melon ,gramps! Recorded Jan.9 ,1992 , 20 years ago ,today!! At the world-famous Cat Machine house ,in Ft. Myers,Florida. Art by Richard Diran ,slightly modified by me! Alternate front covers in zip.

BIG SATAN INC. - Tap And Die b/w Scarey Feet

From the Seattle grunge scene of 1987 -1992 ,this is from '92. Metal-soaked grunge riffs ,that will pound your head in! This is on Meat Records ,and the band is now kaput ,I suppose? The kind of shit Billy and Shane would be onto ,if they had heard it back then (or ,maybe now ,who knows?)

ONE FELL SWOOP - Crab Medicine

Ed, Joel ,and Chipmonk were joined by guitarist Billy Drake ,the pefect match to spar with Chipmonk's guitar wizardry. And spar they do! Some fine songs are enhanced by Billy's guest appearance ,harkening back to the glory days of the Cat Machine! There is a blow-out Stooges cover (Not Right) ,and it ends with a 12 second hardcore blast ,"Epcot Police State" In between all that though ,you have ace alt-rock ,indie -punk songs ,that the band was always known for. "Minturn ,We Hardly Knew Ye" ,pokes joking fun at Minty ,an older guy musician we knew ,who was arrested for some crap. Maybe a carry-over from Cat Machine's ,"I Hate Vacuums" , the song ,"Ukeleles Suck" is a one-minute blistering blast of anger at the stringed instrument. A few that Joel sings on ,"Lips Of Gods" and "Move Up" ,are true underground alt-pop gems."Born Again Maniac" ,has a tune that will stick in your brain sideways ,like a rotting fish lodged in a dead bear's craw, and will stay with you for days. Don't remind me!

SLUGGISHA #1000 - THE 1000TH BLOG POST!!!!!

This is the 1000th post on this blog! Sluggisha Tapes started as an afterthought ,in 1990. There were local Ft. Myers ,FL bands in the mid to late 80's ,that started the Sluggisha asthetic. When Cat Machine ,and before them ,Myopia ,began their reign of underground terror ,the decision was made to start a mail order cassette label. We ("we" being myself,Joel and Tony Rizzo,Billy Drake,Shane Carwile ,Chipmonk, and others from our contingent) ,were recording so much ,and had so many spin-off bands going on all the time ,that we knew people had to hear it!The orders slowly trickled in (I met Food Fortunata around this point(a friend to this day) ,(who was doing the same thing as us),thru mail ordering cassettes from his vast catalog, and then I realized there were others like us,many, many, others!) ,I ran ads in Maximum Rock 'N Roll and Flipside ,and we flyered the town ,each time we had a gig.Cat Machine only played out live twice ,neither time were we recorded.Myopia played a whole mess of gigs ,and later One Fell Swoop had a residency as the house band (we broke open downtown ,for all the bands that followed) ,at The Draft House ,on Dean St. Even further down the road ,Sexboy took up residence there, and brought lots of out of town bands in to play with them.We had Salad Days (later to become reborn as The Indigo Room) ,and The Main St. Coffee House ,and Samskull moved his store ,Offbeat Records ,to the Patio DeLeon! We had local zines ,Rodent Cake ,Psychotic Episode ,Mad Asshole Digest ,and tons more ,many of which are ,or will eventually be ,posted at my other blog , Mediachrist.blogspot.com .We were young ,and drunk ,and having fun.Eventually in the late 90's ,I had to move away ,and the scene crumbled away.A few years ago ,I started the blog ,because I knew all my bandmates would wanna hear the old stuff ,and I was the only one who had the tapes ,so I began to chronicle our days as the kings of the underground scene ,in our small ,shitty ,town. This compilation has many unreleased tracks, live tracks, demos, unreleased ,and soon to be released ,and/or posted. There are 122 bands/songs ,almost 6 hours of fun! I unfortunately could not include every single band or artist on the label ,but I did a good job I think ,along with suggestions from friends and followers. This goes out to Gary and Rick at the Draft House , Cindy at The Coffee House ,Ralph at the Record Trader ,and all the fans and friends and bands ,and all the people we lost to death, jail, marriage, and long distance moves. We started out in the old days ,now everything is on the web ,these kids today got it easy ! Three zips in one file ,spans rock n roll ,punk , diy,alt-rock,indie,tardcore ,noise ,and just good 'ol music .The first pic above was the original logo ,as drawn by Steve Reed (I added the Sluggisha Presents ,and #1000). The one below it is the latest ,and it's on a t-shirt! Get yours today for $10 postage paid!!

BLACK NERD - Acoustic Backyard Jam

This is exactly what the title implies. Chipmonk was sadly missing from this tape. Billy and Shane ,play guitars ,Sean Burch/Monson plays bongos ,and some guitar and vocals. Recorded live on 4/5/1992 in Sean's backyard.Definitely cult , and there was a fanzine (the cover of which is reproduced above!) ,of unknown origin , that was printed in a ltd. edition of 13 copies(!), dedicated to this band ,posted  over at my other blog  . There is also a great live at the Draft House recording ,located elsewhere on this blog. This must have been fun for the participants ,as it is fun to listen to. Do an eight-niner ,and sink into this atmospheric set of tunes.

WHORESHACK - Whoreshack 2 , But Not Too Whoreshack

This is the second recording from the instrumental trio. Although on this round ,from tracks 5 onwards , has special guest guitarist ,Steve Reed ! Kinda like the Ventures , if they were raised on punk and metal music. The only vocals here are imitations of Arnold Horshack , plus 3 covers of , Flipper , The Stooges , and Fear ! And a bunch of idle chit-chat at the last track. And an acapella rendering of the theme song from the Welcome Back Kotter TV show. Recorded live at the Bakery , 3/16/1993. The next post of this band ,will be their first album ,since we worked backwards in succesion. Then after that ,there will be a special posting of their appearance at the coffee house ,with Big Bong Theory ,and Conveyor.

BUZZ WORKSHOP - Teenage Diaries -Part Two (Prom Nite And The Days Following)

This is part two of the diary concept album ,played and sang by Billy , Joel ,and Tall Ray,(part one is the post below this one!). So in this episode ,Prom Nite is here ,then it's off to a heavy metal party, where the loud music kinda camoflages the ringing noises in his head, and where some blotter acid is dispensed, a dose of which meets our subject's brain(thinking maybe that ,will quell the noisy ,highly-pitched sounds, ringing in his skull !) .The trip started out alright , but the ringing didn't stop, and he was headed on a bummer which lead to heavy thoughts, feelings of insanity , crossing the tracks towards insanity ,and finally succumbing to it's natural pull. Recorded the day after part one ,and the concept is not lost on me.There are vocals on nearly every track here,to further help you understand the concept, whereas on part one ,the soundtrack was all instrumental.

I didn't really go into the story on part one ,but here goes. The kid was always gawky ,and he got a nose job (several weeks prior to the prom). He gets the bandages removed ,and the doctor finds he did a shoddy job. So he has to bust his nose again ,to re-set it. The pain of his nose being broken again ,leads to a screaming ringing in his ears , which begins the quick slide towards insanity. The thought of knowing he soon will have to go to prom (Mom already picked up his tux) ,with the bandages over his nose (embarassing),and the incessant ringing noises ,he gets totally wasted drunk. Then he realizes that he can't hear anything or anyone but the noise. He falls to his bed ,drunken ,and the room is spinning. He awakens on the morning of prom ,like a turtle grumping out of his den.Everything is moving ,and his head is pounding. And the noise is louder, yet he's grown used to it ,when he was passed out.He orders a pizza with everything. When it arrives he pays the delivery guy, and inhales the whole pizza while watching a kids show about marionette puppets ,made of vegetables , climbing mountains. Later that day he gets dressed up,and heads for prom.On the way there ,he almost gets jumped, by some younger kids ,who then see his nose ,and leave him alone. He rips the bandages off ,and walks thru the school's front doors ,to the prom ,to hopefully score ,chicks or drugs!

BUZZ WORKSHOP - Teenage Diaries -Part One (The Week Leading Up To Prom Nite)

This is a 2 part concept album,as I surmised upon listening. The band line-up on this day was ,Joel Rizzo ,Billy Drake , & Tall Ray . Mike Smith plays the drums on the first 3 tracks here , and Billy's not on the first song. Anyways ,as you listen ,and view the song titles,it all becomes very apparent. You're seeing, hearing, and believing things ,a teenage boy would ,as time is creeping up on prom nite. The artwork ,was drawn ,I think , by Billy ,(small signature ,bottom right corner),but I may be wrong , and it depicts the view from Joel's living room couch. Recorded the same day as the ,"Creeps Taking Dope" sessions , April 13,1996.At 5455 studios. In beautiful mid-town Crime Manor , Ft. Myers. Really good band, they never cease to explore the options and calvacades of sound! This is part one, where the story unfolds thru an instrumental soundtrack, part two is posted above this ,and there are vocals on nearly every track. Good indie/punk/alt-rock sounds!

CAT MACHINE - Pathetic Jonesing

Yes ,that's Sluggisha the Cat,in his Elvis get-up,in downtown Ft. Myers ,because this is when Cat Machine ,"left the building" ,so to speak. This is the 50th recording made by this under-appreciated,underground,outsider,cult-band,and it was to be their last ,at least of this era. 9 perfect studio recordings from Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk, and Billy.Recorded July 13,1991 ,20 years ago, yesterday. There is a rehearal tape from Sept 2,1991 (which I will post on that date!) ,for a gig at the old rock club ,"Norma's" ,at which an A & R person, was coming to observe us,both of which never materialized, which spelled the end of Cat Machine.Ed ,Tony, and Joel ,reformed later as the "Projek Pimps" for one tape, and there is also ,"Litterbox" ,the greatest hits comp, and "The Last Newest One " ,where Vance replaces Chipmonk, and also the phenomenal 10 disc cross-section of every tape posted ,"The Mystery,The History,And Shit" ,all of which can be found on this here blog ,as well as,(now), the whole catalog of their year-long journey into indie-band cassette-label territory!

Since this is the end of this series, and because of the importance of this band to the Ft. Myers,FL underground scene ,I am compiling covers of Cat Machine songs,as played by other artists! Please ,if you are in a band, you know someone in a band, you are a band, download some Cat Machine, record a cover version, and send it in to me! When I get enough submissions,I will put together a compilation, and may even have it for sale ,before it is posted on this or any other blog! So please ,if you need help with lyrics, let me know,I have every word ever written ,stored away in the vault! You can contact me thru the comments box,I will get in touch with you!

CAT MACHINE - Tony Wakes Up

There's only one more studio tape, and one rehearsal tape after this masterpiece of underground,cult-band madness! This recording had Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk, and Billy on it from 6/23/1991. As with most of these 4-track recordings, all the songs here are top-notch! With a Ventures/Stooges mash-up ,before there ever was that sort of thing, plus each member gets to play a second or two of the guitar solo! The mug shot of Tony ,represents where he was for the previous few tapes, and the title also tells the tale! Here's the track list!

1.Donkey Sex #1
2.Wise (St. Patrick Chewing Corners)
3.Glitch
4.Paul Stanley (Is Pam?)
5.Loose (Ventures/Stooges)
6.Losing Houses
