There are covers of The Cars and Alvin Lee's Love ,on this outing!The songs have a cohesive bluesy feel ,laid on top of indie-punk ,alt-rock foundations.Some really fine experimental arrangements ,and furious drumming on our home made drum kit!Recorded 12/10/1991 at Cat Machine House ,20 years ago today! ONE FELL SWOOP - Rollback Timeholes

Recorded on Halloween morning ,1991 ,in Cat Machine house ,Joel's room , with the TV on the whole time ,and making for some dandy samples in between songs. I mean ,trippin' samples,man. We bring you into our trip with the first track ,"LSD Soldiers". The Shaggs and The Beat Happening are covered ,and the rest of the ten tracks here are simply astounding! The samples will definitely draw you in. Later on in the evening we recorded the tape in the post above this ,"We Dare You!" ,which I will expound on further in the post, but suffice to say ,it is the equal of this fine recording! ONE FELL SWOOP - The Lust Detector

This was a busy week for OFS. The title of this release was drawn from a 1986 porno ,listed in the worst films of all time , The Lust Detector. The girl on the cover art ,seen above ,is Bunny Bleu ,one of the stars of this monstrosity. Mimi , an old girlfriend of mine ,was present for this recording ,and sings on the last track ,"Some French Thing". And Mimi looks almost exactly like the girl pictured above ,lucky me ,huh?. There is a cover of the "Log" theme ,from Ren & Stimpy ,as we were big fans at the time. All the recordings up til this one ,were done in Joel's room ,at Cat Machine House , while this ,and the next few ,were done in Ed's living room,in Lehigh Acres,tanked up on beer and smoke, Recorded October 6th ,1991 ,20 years ago today!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Swoopin' Time !

It was 20 years ago on this day ,that Ed , Joel ,& Chipmonk recorded this tape , 9/26/1991 ,at Cat Machine house. There is a cover of "Black Betty" ,mixed into the 3 part finale ,"Swoop And Ska". Also a true story about a "Bogus Bomb" ,that was placed on the Cape Coral bridge ,at the time. And of course ,more of their trademark indie/diy/college rock sound ,that they were known for. Some down-east dialogue slips into the first track ,"Tie The Dog Loose,Jake" ,and the tune "Body Distortion" ,has some cool intercut samples during the playing of the song!
9 tracks ,in slightly over an hour, that slide down easy ,like that first cuppa java in the a.m.These guys were, and still are, cool beyond compare!

CAT MACHINE - Pathetic Jonesing

Yes ,that's Sluggisha the Cat,in his Elvis get-up,in downtown Ft. Myers ,because this is when Cat Machine ,"left the building" ,so to speak.This is the 50th recording made by this under-appreciated,underground,outsider,cult-band,and it was to be their last ,at least of this era. 9 perfect studio recordings from Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk,and Billy.Recorded July 13,1991 ,20 years ago,yesterday. There is a rehearal tape from Sept 2,1991 (which I will post on that date!) ,for a gig at the old rock club ,"Norma's" ,at which an A & R person, was coming to observe us,both of which never materialized,which spelled the end of Cat Machine.Ed ,Tony, and Joel ,reformed later as the "Projek Pimps" for one tape,and there is also ,"Litterbox" ,the greatest hits comp, and "The Last Newest One " ,where Vance replaces Chipmonk,and also the phenomenal 10 disc cross-section of every tape posted ,"The Mystery,The History,And Shit" ,all of which can be found on this here blog ,as well as,(now), the whole catalog of their year-long journey into indie-band cassette-label territory!

Since this is the end of this series,and because of the importance of this band to the Ft. Myers,FL underground scene ,I am compiling covers of Cat Machine songs,as played by other artists! Please ,if you are in a band,you know someone in a band,you are a band,download some Cat Machine,record a cover version,and send it in to me! When I get enough submissions,I will put together a compilation,and may even have it for sale ,before it is posted on this or any other blog! There's only one more studio tape,and one rehearsal tape after this masterpiece of underground,cult-band madness! This recording had Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk,and Billy on it from 6/23/1991. As with most of these 4-track recordings,all the songs here are top-notch! With a Ventures/Stooges mash-up ,before there ever was that sort of thing,plus each member gets to play a second or two of the guitar solo! CAT MACHINE - Power Trio

Around this time ,in Cat Machine's history,Tony and Myopia had just finished up their string of gigs at Visions,and Tony was in the pokey for a month or two.So Ed,Joel,and Chipmonk ,carried on as usual ,this is live to boombox,with great sound! Once again,as with "New Thing" ,a few tapes back ,this is kinda the germination of the splinter band ,One Fell Swoop.New versions of ,"Peddler of Pencils" (2x) ,"Land Of Faraway" ,and "Slim Jim Blues" ,as well as a bunch of awe-inspiring experimental stuff,that will blow your doors off!There's only about a half dozen tapes left in this series! All 4-track studio stuff,(with the noticibly missing Tony,on about half of the tapes)except the last tape,which is a rehearsal for a gig that fell thru, at Serena's ,a shitty rock club in shitty Cape Coral. So stay tuned for the rest of this tape series,scattered thru the next coupla months,sporadically,posting on the original release dates,20 years to the date! This was recorded on May 28th,1991.

CAT MACHINE - Dude! ,That's Penis! a/k/a Live At Gramps's -May 1991

A short rehearsal of 4 tunes,(each member sings one) , opening for Myopia ,on this tape,(Myopia's set is here: http://sluggisha.blogspot.com/2008/11/m-y-o-p-i.html ),as well as live.One of the few tapes with a real drum set,as we usually resorted to drum machines,and other more primitive percussion. I don't know if I ever went into the meaning of the title, so,here goes: Ashey moved between Massachussetts and Florida a few times.Once ,upon his return,he was using the phrase ,"Dude! ,that's penis!" ,which he said meant ,"cool" ,up in MA. We just rolled about,and laughed,and used it for a tape title,which was the usual progression of a catchphrase,at least in Cat Machine's world.

CAT MACHINE - Fag Bar -Rehearsals For Visions Gig -May 1991

A full rehearsal of the entire set list ,give or take a coupla numbers.All 4 boys,Ed,Joel,Tony,and Chipmonk ,are in prime form,on this practice session.Only one gig at Visions,and we were done with that establishment,as the owners said we were too loud.As the title reveals,we played at a gay bar,on their grand opening ,in fact.No live tapes from gigs have ever surfaced,so this is as live as it gets,along with the other rehearsal tapes.Of course Cat Machine opened for the great Myopia,who was Tony,Billy and Shane.Myopia played a small string of dates,at Visions.

This is Ed,Joel,and Chipmonk,No Tony,on the 4-track scene. The first 2 tracks are Ed solo,celebrating Sluggisha(samples from Top Cat cartoons),and the upcoming gig at Visions nightclub.Then each of the trio sings a song apiece,(lyrics from the Amok catalog),and it ends off with a piece featuring the voice of Langston Hughes!This is kinda the beginning of the band which formed after the Cat Machine broke up,One Fell Swoop.

CAT MACHINE - Cat Haus (Rehearsal For SW Florida Juvenile Detention Center -5/4/1991

Joel & Tony's dad is a preacher.He got us our first gig ever,at the juvenile detention center in east Ft Myers,Florida(pictured above!). We played for a room full of around 25 or so,a couple of kids loved us,but the most of the racially diverse youth there,despised us.We were loud ,obnoxious,annoying,yeah,you get it,we were being ourselves,Cat Machine! This is a practice session for that gig.Only a handful of songs here,we did a full set at the center.It was a blast!Too bad we have no audio or video of the show,now that would be priceless!Bonus track at end is filled with riffs,and chatter amongst the band and others!

CAT MACHINE - Teen-age Pez-head Punk Rock Spies

One of the most cohesive studio efforts,by the most under-rated,undiscovered,underground,outsider ,cult-bands of all time.Recorded on 4/2/1991,with Ed,Tony,Joel,and Chipmonk,this one has the hits!!Their 39th release ,features the college rock radio hit ,"When The Ape Man Smiles", which ,thru Chipmonk's contacts,managed to garner an audience,when it was played on several college campus radio stations,across the nation,most notably in Wisconsin.Other great compositions here ,include ,"All In The Family" , "Alcoholic Funk" ,and "Backstab" ,all sung by Joel. Chipmonk vocalizes on ,"Lunchbox Sabotage",and "Fly High Flyers" ,while Ed yells on ,"Spontaneously Combusting" , "My Mom's A Facist" and "The Things To Come.And Tony ,besides singing lead on "Ape Man" also kicks in with his crooning on "Gettin' Bent (Big Dead Ass).This is seriously really good! If you haven't heard anything from this year-long series yet ,I would suggest you might start here.This really shows their true talent of getting wasted,and banging out world class punk songs! The title was later appropriated by Sexboy ,for a song title .

Myers,Florida,on 3/19/1991.Ed,Tony,Joel,Chipmonk,and Billy,at Cat Machine house,recorded ,as usual,live into a boom box.Even more of the cryptic song titles,and lyrics they are known for,as well as some of the best alt-rock/punk music ever recorded! "Cranky In The Extreme" ,and the last track ,"The Disenchanted(I Am Relaxed!)" ,may help to decipher what the title is really all about!There is only one more live to boombox cassette left in this series(besides a few rehearsal tapes),after which everything was recorded on a four-track system,leading to better sound,and better songs!Stay tuned for the rest of this series!
