CAT MACHINE - Pathetic Jonesing

Yes ,that's Sluggisha the Cat,in his Elvis get-up,in downtown Ft. Myers ,because this is when Cat Machine ,"left the building" ,so to speak. This is the 50th recording made by this under-appreciated,underground,outsider,cult-band,and it was to be their last ,at least of this era. 9 perfect studio recordings from Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk, and Billy.Recorded July 13,1991 ,20 years ago, yesterday. There is a rehearal tape from Sept 2,1991 (which I will post on that date!) ,for a gig at the old rock club ,"Norma's" ,at which an A & R person, was coming to observe us,both of which never materialized, which spelled the end of Cat Machine.Ed ,Tony, and Joel ,reformed later as the "Projek Pimps" for one tape, and there is also ,"Litterbox" ,the greatest hits comp, and "The Last Newest One " ,where Vance replaces Chipmonk, and also the phenomenal 10 disc cross-section of every tape posted ,"The Mystery,The History,And Shit" ,all of which can be found on this here blog ,as well as,(now), the whole catalog of their year-long journey into indie-band cassette-label territory!

Since this is the end of this series, and because of the importance of this band to the Ft. Myers,FL underground scene ,I am compiling covers of Cat Machine songs,as played by other artists! Please ,if you are in a band, you know someone in a band, you are a band, download some Cat Machine, record a cover version, and send it in to me! When I get enough submissions,I will put together a compilation, and may even have it for sale ,before it is posted on this or any other blog! So please ,if you need help with lyrics, let me know,I have every word ever written ,stored away in the vault! You can contact me thru the comments box,I will get in touch with you!

CAT MACHINE - Tony Wakes Up

There's only one more studio tape, and one rehearsal tape after this masterpiece of underground,cult-band madness! This recording had Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk, and Billy on it from 6/23/1991. As with most of these 4-track recordings, all the songs here are top-notch! With a Ventures/Stooges mash-up ,before there ever was that sort of thing, plus each member gets to play a second or two of the guitar solo! The mug shot of Tony ,represents where he was for the previous few tapes, and the title also tells the tale! Here's the track list!

1.Donkey Sex #1
2.Wise (St. Patrick Chewing Corners)
3.Glitch
4.Paul Stanley (Is Pam?)
5.Loose (Ventures/Stooges)
6.Losing Houses

CAT MACHINE - Today's Hit Music

A 4-track session from 6/4/1991. Only Ed J.,Billy Drake, and Joel Rizzo here.Ed J. takes on a death metal growl, for some reason,on some of the heaviest, powerful stuff Cat Machine has ever recorded!Joel sings the lead number ,and the last 2 tracks are like battle of the DJ's,as several records are played on several record players ,at the same time!Like a disco on Saturn, spacey, experimental noise! Great rockin' songs ,from this underground,undiscovered,unheard,outsider,cult-band.Just a few more tapes left in this nearly year-long series!Get it now!! Title can also be read as,"Today Shit Music" , just in case you were thinking about leaving that comment!Fucker!

CAT MACHINE - Dyke Softball

June 1st,1991 ,at Cat Machine house.Ed J.,Joel Rizzo,Chipmonk, and Billy Drake.Since Tony was put away for a little while, the first tune on here is,"Tony Takes A Nap",which mostly concerns skateboarding. There are a couple more jammin' songs, and then the last 2 tracks are audio verite,or musique concrete,if you will."Gene Simmons' Codpiece" ,is a lengthy jaunt thru overlayed samples and tv,and music, while "Linda Blair In Jail",is a nasty number with Exorcist samples, that will have you laffin' it up!Listen in the backround to the funny comments by band members! 4-track studio recordings!

CAT MACHINE - Power Trio

Around this time ,in Cat Machine's history,Tony and Myopia had just finished up their string of gigs at Visions, and Tony was in the pokey for a month or two.So Ed,Joel, and Chipmonk ,carried on as usual ,this is live to boombox, with great sound! Once again,as with "New Thing" ,a few tapes back ,this is kinda the germination of the splinter band ,One Fell Swoop.New versions of ,"Peddler of Pencils" (2x) ,"Land Of Faraway" ,and "Slim Jim Blues" ,as well as a bunch of awe-inspiring experimental stuff, that will blow your doors off! There's only about a half dozen tapes left in this series! All 4-track studio stuff,(with the noticibly missing Tony,on about half of the tapes)except the last tape, which is a rehearsal for a gig that fell thru, at Serena's ,a shitty rock club in shitty Cape Coral. So stay tuned for the rest of this tape series, scattered thru the next coupla months, sporadically, posting on the original release dates,20 years to the date! This was recorded on May 28th,1991.

CAT MACHINE - New Thing

This is Ed,Joel, and Chipmonk,No Tony,on the 4-track scene. The first 2 tracks are Ed solo, celebrating Sluggisha(samples from Top Cat cartoons),and the upcoming gig at Visions nightclub. Then each of the trio sings a song apiece,(lyrics from the Amok catalog),and it ends off with a piece featuring the voice of Langston Hughes! This is kinda the beginning of the band which formed after the Cat Machine broke up,One Fell Swoop.

CAT MACHINE - 39 1/2 E.P.

A 4 song e.p. from Ed J. and Chipmonk. The rest of the band was at work,or something. This was also,I believe, the session which yielded the fine ,"Whippetman" ,a band found elsewhere on this blog.A cople of actual "songs",and a couple of highly experimental tracks. This series picks up again in about a month,on the date of the next tape. This is fun,but not the full line-up.Good for what it is,which is good! CAT MACHINE - Teen-age Pez-head Punk Rock Spies

One of the most cohesive studio efforts,by the most under-rated,undiscovered,underground,outsider ,cult-bands of all time.Recorded on 4/2/1991,with Ed,Tony,Joel, and Chipmonk, this one has the hits!!Their 39th release ,features the college rock radio hit ,"When The Ape Man Smiles", which ,thru Chipmonk's contacts, managed to garner an audience, when it was played on several college campus radio stations, across the nation, most notably in Wisconsin.Other great compositions here ,include ,"All In The Family" , "Alcoholic Funk" ,and "Backstab" ,all sung by Joel. Chipmonk vocalizes on ,"Lunchbox Sabotage",and "Fly High Flyers" ,while Ed yells on ,"Spontaneously Combusting" , "My Mom's A Facist" and "The Things To Come. And Tony ,besides singing lead on "Ape Man" also kicks in with his crooning on "Gettin' Bent (Big Dead Ass). This is seriously really good! If you haven't heard anything from this year-long series yet ,I would suggest you might start here. This really shows their true talent of getting wasted, and banging out world class punk songs! The title was later appropriated by Sexboy ,for a song title .

CAT MACHINE - Slop Maintenance

Release # 38 from the greatest undiscovered,underground,outsider,cult-band,from Ft. Myers,FL , 3/30/1991.Ed,Joel,and Chipmonk, are here ,in full force, and Tony showed up for a few songs. One of their finest moments is here("Who Threw The Glass In The Street?"),based on a movie script ,from a Bob Dylan film.10 tunes, recorded in the 4-track studio. The quantity of songs is lower, the quality higher! This was a fertile creative period for the band, owing much to the recording techniques. The picture above, was stuck on the old Flying-V ,on the back, came from a trash can,and reminded me of Mel (Mel's Diner)from the TV show ,"Alice".

CAT MACHINE - Colleen Applegate

The title and pic is Shauna Grant, porn star who blew her brains out at age 20.One of the tracks on here utilizes a flexi disc from a porn rag, with Shauna talking. This is very experimental stuff, but there are some downright punk rockin' numbers here also.Only 9 songs, this is the beginning of the 4-track studio recordings ,made by Cat Machine. The band here is Ed,Joel, and Chipmonk. No Tony or Billy? Some of their finest moments are here.tho' . "3 Desperate Wet Nephews" , "Ringing For Tea" , "Into Place" ,are some of the crazy tunes.Chipmonk plays an old bluesman on,"Slim Jim Blues",and Joel sing lyrics from the cassette tape instructions on,"Manual".from 20 years ago today , 3/26/1991.

CAT MACHINE - 1/2 Live- 1/2 P.I.S.T.(Pretty Industrial Studio Thing)

Another masterpiece from the boys,Ed,Tony, and Joel, with special guest Vance (rhythm) ,on tracks 17,18,and 19.The first 14 tracks are live in Joel's room, with a special interruption visit, from Gramps. And there's a song about Kelly Clark, which only insiders may understand. The second half is ,as the title describes,"industrial",as in loud, metallic beats, and noise, and "studio",as in 4-track recording.A couple of lengthy songs(one titled,"The Black Swan"),the first version of ,"Bonk Fever",(which shows up in it's best version ,on the very next tape),And a bizzare number,"Snake Crane Secret",which is then remixed, screwed and chopped, for the last track.A wild ride, for sure,as is the case with all of the Cat Machine's recordings!Stay tuned here, for the rest of everything this underground, outsider ,cult band, ever recorded ,will be posted!!

CAT MACHINE- Big Hunk O' Cheese

The next part in our continuing series, this is a 6 song e.p. ,recorded on 4-track studio in Tony's room. The production here is raw,but I plan that all 4-track stuff will be remixed, after this series has run it's course.Genre -hopping on musical styles here, you get a white boy funk sound, some weird stoner rock,multi-speed cut-up lyrics, lounge jazz porn, hard rock/metal,and some bluesy riffs.Weird and trippy, check this out.Joel,Tony, and I,are the band,no guests,we all do vocals, and play everything. From Oct '90. All is unimportant,on God's scale!

CAT MACHINE-live at the hair ball/3 dead mice e.p.

Today is the 20th anniversary of Cat Machine. The first tape, presented here in it's entirety, for the first time ever, was recorded on 9/25/1990,in the living room of what later became known as,"Cat Machine" house,it belonged to Gramps,Tony and Joel Rizzo's grandfather. The first eight songs comprise the "live" part of this tape, and consist mostly of instrumental jams, but there are some vocals on several songs. We were mainly just getting to know each others styles on this one,and it started as it remained for the complete tenure of the "Machine",a 1-2-3-go! style, where one guy would come up with a riff, and everyone else would follow. All the songs on the live segment, were spontaneous, and improvisational, with no overdubs or edits. There's a song on here,to try and cash in on the dance craze (of the early 60's),"Do The Scab".It never really caught on.The last track,"3 Dead Mice",is Tony,Joel, and I,all reading from different books, out loud,at the same time.

The e.p. titled,"3 Dead Mice",has 4-track recordings, done on the same day."Throw It To The Dogs",starts out with a mean dog growling, evilly, till the music and Tony's vocals kick in.One of our biggest hits, and a staple of our live sets, the second track,"Crazy Mary",is about this old cat lady that lived in one of the rooms in Cat Machine house. She had tons of cats, and was indeed, crazy.Kind of a weird, surrealistic view,of what she probably was thinking. Some of the lines, are things she actually said."86 Tony",is a take-off on one of the boy's earlier bands who did a tune called,"86 Whitey".And the final track is the one from whence we got our name."Cat Machine",is what the title says.We took a bunch of Crazy Mary's cats, put several in each of three pillow cases, and put the microphone by the sacks full of kitties. No harm was done, the cats sound angry, cuz they were all together in a pillowcase, like humans crammed into an elevator.Later, when we were thinking of a name for the band,I suggested it,because before we put the cats in the bags,I said,"Hey let's build a cat machine"!.Ifigured we could record it for the e.p.,didn't think it would end up being our name. The art above is the earliest logo and poster(dated 10-3-90) available, and was later used on a flyer for a live show. The tapes never really had art,so i will be adding some kind of picture to each release. This is the beginning of a year long series ,where i will post each tape on the date it was recorded,20 years ago.The second tape will be posted on ,October 2nd,2010.For more info, check out the lengthy post"Cat Machine-The Mystery,The History, and Shit",with a career-spanning 10 disc cross-section of their work. Also see our greatest hits compilation, wherein songs that were on our set list, are compiled,"Litterbox".Pleas leave comments, and wish Cat Machine ,a happy anniversary.!!!

Also for anyone out there in a band,or working solo,I am currently working on a tribute to Cat Machine, and would like you or your band's renditions of our songs.Contact me thru the comments box below!!Thanks, G O D

this is the second release from the escaped psychotic who enjoys damaging vinyl, then recording said records.this is a little different than the usual lock-groove sound of uncut.this is one of several 4-track sessions by uncut.although the last couple numbers are characteristically in place.the final track is a super bonus that has'nt been released till now,get your paper towels ready!you'll need to do some wiping up after you hear it!many more volumes will be forthcoming in future times.for now enjoy this bit of craziness induced by what uncut calls,"music"https://sluggishatapes.bandcamp.com/album/uncut-2
