Fall Into the Holidays ~ Bedroom Ceiling Pizazz

Welcome to week two of  FALL INTO THE HOLIDAYS, a four week series
where we'll be sharing ideas for sprucing up our homes before the holiday season kicks into
high gear. Our lovely hostess Lisa @ Shine Your Light came up with the idea by asking friends
what they'd most like to see on blogs - hands down, simple, do-able ideas were the favorite!
This week we're focusing on the BEDROOM.
Don't miss my talented friends at the end of the post, you'll want to pop over and check
 out their fun ideas too!

Today I'm sharing my friend's ceiling in her guest bedroom. She painted it a bold accent
color and it added so much pizazz! Its a simple, budget friendly way to inject a fun look
if your guest room needs a refresh before holiday guests arrive.

I love the vibrant coral, rust shade that she pulled from her blanket, custom pillow and
roman shade. It's Sherwin Williams 7600 - Bolero.

We still have a plan for black and white artwork beneath the sconces to
finish off the room.

I think it's the perfect unexpected bold choice and totally makes the room.

We'll be back next Tuesday sharing a new room idea, and if you missed last
week I dished about an easy kitchen update here

Don't miss these friends' ideas, too!

My Pink Living Room & An Amazing Paint Color Resource

Change is in the air! :)
You guys know I'm a pink girl, I jumped on the Radiant Orchid trend a couple years ago,
last year my Christmas Tour had pops of pink, it showed up in my
Christmas Tour in 2014, and I've used it in several of my clients' homes. It should
come as no surprise that I have a crush on Blush, and the soft pretty hue would make an
appearance in our home, in some form, at some point. I could have added simple Blush
pillows to my neutral decor, but I've been captivated by rooms bathed in this delicate color.
So, a couple days ago I went for it...with the blessing of my boys.
Benjamin Moore's Queen Anne Pink was the winner.
I'm completely smitten, I stare at it like a mama with a newborn baby! Haha!

I knew it was going to be tough to narrow down the perfect Blush, but it proved
to be even trickier than I thought. I did so much research comparing colors on Pinterest
to samples on my different paint decks to the samples on the wall, and reading blogs that
claimed to have found the 'perfect blush color.' I truly spent hours and hours.
It was worth every minute, and in the end I found the most incredible resource which
led me to Benjamin Moore's Queen Anne Pink.

I narrowed it down to Farrow & Ball's Pink Ground, it got rave reviews,
and had the exact look I was going for, BUT there aren't any F & B retailers
in Colorado and it's $100/ gallon. If you're not familiar, Farrow & Ball is
known among designers for its unmatched depth of color and ingredients.
I was on a mission to find the closest match when I came across this amazing
resource from Laurel @ Laurel Home.
using real samples from both companies!
Thank you, Laurel!
Head over to her awesome blog, filled with tons of invaluable information, for a
clearer picture of the in-depth chart below, also please pin from her site here

I'll be sharing more of the room for a Fall Home Tour very soon.
Yikes, I have no idea what I'm putting with this or how it's going to transition to fall!

TGIF - The Gems I Found

These summer weekends are flying by ~ hope you savor every bit of it!

Shelley created this eclectic guest room by shopping her house.

This makes me want to go do some push ups!

It's Only Paint!

Hi guys, hope you had a wonderful weekend!
I decided to start a new project, because I have a to-do list longer than my arm, and
after waffling for two years about painting my dining room - today is the day it must
be done!
For as long as I can remember I've loved the fresh green color
Chartreuse, Citron, Moss, Fern, Lime, Olive, Pea.
I've used it here and there on pillows and the seats in my dining room, but I've
always wanted a big, bold dose.
I was SO excited and couldn't get my samples on the wall fast enough,
 now I'm getting chicken.
With windows, french doors and a wide opening there's not a huge amount
of wall space, and I decided against the neon hue, so it won't be shockingly bright!
But, it's not exactly your everyday neutral. :)

The color I chose is Behr's Riesling Grape, on top and the larger sample on the left below,
because it was a bit more muted.

My super sweet friend offered to help paint AND re-paint if I didn't like it!
I'm going to take her up on it and knock it - give us a day and keep your fingers crossed
it doesn't look like you're walking into a moss covered jungle. :)

My Five Favorites - Paint - A New Series with Fab Friends

Welcome to our new series ~ My Five Favorites!
I'm so excited to be kicking it off with some of my awesome blogging friends.
You might recognize the group from Best of the Nest, well we were ready for a fresh
idea, and all agreed there's nothing we love more than tried and true blogger
 recommendations and thus created

My Five Favorites

The first Tuesday of the month we'll each share our Five Favorites on a
specific topic, up first Five Favorite Paint Colors.
A special guest will be joining the four of us every month and today we're so happy
our talented friend
will be giving us the scoop on her favorites.

# 1
Long before Benjamin Moore named Simply White their 2016 Color of the Year
it was my favorite go-to white paint. The soft warm hue with no yellow undertones,
but the fresh, clean characteristics of white won me over.
Here are a few rooms where I've used it.

A couple days before their announcement I sourced it for an entire new build,
we're still a few months away from completion but I can't wait to show you
what a gorgeous backdrop the color will be.

Benjamin Moore - Simply White Studio McGee

# 2
Sherwin Williams - Extra White is a crisp bright white I like for cabinets and
trim. I also used it to repaint my tile in my kitchen update.

# 3
My favorite dark color is Mined Coal by Behr, a deep moody charcoal with a lot
of depth. I first used it in my son's room makeover, then in our bathroom.

Not the prettiest photo (above) but a better representation of the color without the sunlight.

# 4
If you've been reading my blog for any time at all you've probably heard me
go on about how much I LOVE to use Rustoleum Protective Enamel to paint
furniture. I was smitten with the lacquer like reflective finish from the first piece
I painted. Yes, it is oil based and requires a bit more work to clean up but I promise
it's worth every minute!

Rustoleum Protective Enamel Gloss - Almond

# 5
Rustoleum Protective Enamel Gloss - Black
More of the same beautiful finish in glossy black.

Anthropologie Knock Off - DIY Weathered Gray Dresser

Hi friends, hope you all had a fabulous weekend. We had a busy one that included a
fun charity event, a fundraiser for the Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rocky Mountains,
GRRR Gala. Is that the best name or what? We were greeted by golden retrievers on the
way in and they strolled about throughout the evening - completely spoiled with endless
ear scratches and tummy rubs by all of us dog lovers. :)
Since I didn't have time to work on any of my projects I'm finally sharing the long overdue
tutorial for the Anthropologie Knock Off Dresser from the
 One Room Challenge Bedroom Reveal.

BEFORE:
My client's dad had made them this dresser years ago but they'd never finished
it, we saw the Anthropologie Portside Dresser and set out to create a similar look.

OUR INSPIRATION:

Anthropologie Portside Dresser

HARDWARE:
Anthropologie sells the Equestrian Pulls separately
and we used Flat Corner Braces in Brass Satin from Home Depot.

We loved the rustic texture on the inspiration dresser but wanted a more subtle version,
as well as a more overall gray color than brown.

This type of furniture makeover was a first for me. I'll tell you what I did, but different
woods and finishes will take the paint differently (i.e. my sample board vs the dresser).
I did know when creating this kind of look it's all about lots of layering the paint,
you may start to think you've created a mess on your client's treasured piece BUT
remember it gets better as you go along. Patience!

SUPPLIES:
Annie Sloan Chalk Paints - French Linen & Graphite
Homax Wall Texture Spray - Orange Peel
Brown Paint (not pictured)
Sea Sponge
Martha Stewart Liquid Gilding in Gold - for bottom of legs

I tried a sample board first using spray on wall texture to achieve the rustic texture.
I played with the amount I sprayed on and also wiping it off as it dried (within minutes)
to get a feel for the look we liked.
It rubs/sands off easily, so if you get too much on your final product no worries.

I decided to do a base coat of a combination of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint
French Linen & Graphite and then apply the texture followed by more paint.
I dipped a slightly damp sea sponge into both colors and then blotted it
off on a the paper plate.

To 'paint' the dresser I wiped the sponge across the drawers using long strokes to
alleviate any stop/start marks. The paint dries fast so be prepared to work quickly.
It's water based, so if you mess up just add some water to a clean sponge and wash it
off, or you can always give it a light sanding.

(Hi cute little photobomber)

After the base coat dried I randomly sprayed the wall texture over the dresser.

Then lightly rub it off to create the splotches of texture.
At this point you can tweak it to get your desired color, I added a few strokes of
brown paint (not chalk paint, just some craft paint I had) in the same method with the
sea sponge.

And continued to tweak it with a little green that I noticed in our inspiration
piece and then soften it with the lighter chalk paint watered down.
I'm sorry I can't be more specific here, it was just a lot of trial and error standing back
looking at it adding paint here and there until we came up with the color we liked.
We didn't end up sealing it with any finish or wax yet, but may still do that at some
point if we feel like it's necessary.

Despite not knowing what I was doing it was a fun project and we ended up
loving the end result. Thank goodness!

diy stenciled rug

Do any of you remember about two and a half years ago when Linda @ Calling it Home
invited any bloggers that wanted to participate to paint a rug. It ended up there were
twelve of us that took her up on it. As much as we've enjoyed the rug that I painted for
our front entry, I've decided it's time to paint a new one. I actually love how the paint has
worn and faded. In fact, at the end of my original reveal post I noted, "I considered sanding
it to give it a worn look but I chickened out and decided to let it wear naturally."
Well, it's worn!

After two and a half years of wear.

Original

Oh wow, this is grungier than I thought! I've never washed it only vacuumed.
I was pretty impressed with how the Ikea rug has worn and how the paint held up.

We are a messy family with a cat and golden retriever and we come and go through
the front door almost exclusively and are always tracking in debris. The edges are
beginning to look too faded and the corners are showing wear.

The bad news is Ikea no longer sells the Hessum rug I loved, so I picked up the Osted
not realizing it wasn't the same size until I opened it today. It's not available in the size
I like. Ugh...Ikea, you're messing with me! I think I've figured out a way to buy a longer
size and shorten it.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to start on it today,
which leaves more time for me to waffle over my choices....
