Fall Into the Holidays ~ Bedroom Ceiling Pizazz

Welcome to week two of  FALL INTO THE HOLIDAYS, a four week series
where we'll be sharing ideas for sprucing up our homes before the holiday season kicks into
high gear. Our lovely hostess Lisa @ Shine Your Light came up with the idea by asking friends
what they'd most like to see on blogs - hands down, simple, do-able ideas were the favorite!
This week we're focusing on the BEDROOM.
Don't miss my talented friends at the end of the post, you'll want to pop over and check
 out their fun ideas too!

Today I'm sharing my friend's ceiling in her guest bedroom. She painted it a bold accent
color and it added so much pizazz! Its a simple, budget friendly way to inject a fun look
if your guest room needs a refresh before holiday guests arrive.

I love the vibrant coral, rust shade that she pulled from her blanket, custom pillow and
roman shade. It's Sherwin Williams 7600 - Bolero.

We still have a plan for black and white artwork beneath the sconces to
finish off the room.

I think it's the perfect unexpected bold choice and totally makes the room.

We'll be back next Tuesday sharing a new room idea, and if you missed last
week I dished about an easy kitchen update here

Don't miss these friends' ideas, too!

DIY Graphic Nailhead Ceiling

Hey friends, hope you spent some time over the weekend soaking up summer, as it is
flying by! We only have three more weeks before school starts. : (
I'm on a roll, finally sharing tutorials from Another Craigslist Bedroom Makeover Reveal,
from the One Room Challenge a couple months ago. Last week I shared the
Anthropologie Knock Off - DIY Weathered Gray Dresser
and today the Graphic Nailhead Ceiling. My clients' tray ceiling was the perfect backdrop
for a statement and, of course, one of my favorite ideas was a
Nailhead Ceiling similar to my dining room that I DIYed a few years ago,
 and they were game.

(Btw, I love how the ceiling pattern plays off the bases of the benches.)

Since we were working with a large space with awkward angles and a ceiling fan
off center I knew a repeating pattern may end up looking off balance, and being a
nightmare. I had hoped to come up with something random that wouldn't draw attention to
the angles. This graphic wallpaper was the ticket!! Our goal was to create a more open
 and less busy pattern.

PRODUCT

 French Natural Nail Head Trim - 36 yd rolls @ $33 ea. x 2.5 rolls  = $82.00
1 Box of Nails @ $20

TOTAL $102.00

Here is an online source, DIY Upholstery Supply,
we purchased ours locally at Western Upholstery Supply in Denver.

For reference our room is 21.5' x 16'

PROCEDURE

The nailheads come in a roll, every fifth nailhead is open to secure the strip with a
nail. We found they easily pressed into the drywall ceiling in most places. They also
easily cut apart when you reach a stopping point.

We started by outlining the perimeter of the ceiling and then creating our random pattern
 inside the border .

To create the pattern we began with a couple longer perpendicular strips and
intersected smaller strips from those lines.

And just kept going.
We worked in large sections and would get down from our ladders to look at the pattern
from different spots in the room (as you get a different perspective) to determine the
direction of the next few strips. It was truly random, but looked best when we varied the size
of the spaces, for example if we created a large triangle we would aim for a smaller one or
different shape next to it, or if we ended up with a wide space, we'd try for something
 narrower next to it.

At first we simply held the strip up to the ceiling and when we had it situated in a direction
we liked we began nailing, but some of our lines were ending up not quite as straight as
we liked. We found by using a yardstick and lightly drawing a pencil line to use as a guide
to align the strips it solved the problem.

It took my client and I about 7 hours and then she and her husband finished up
that evening in another couple hours. And NO, our necks didn't hurt, neither of us
were even sore the next day, except my thumb was numb for a couple days after from
pushing the nailheads into the drywall. It isn't hard, but a LOT of climbing up and
down ladders. We also stood on a long dresser and moved it around the room as we
progressed. I highly recommend doing it with someone fun, the time passes quickly
and you'll get in lots of girl talk!

If you'd like to check out a similar look and tutorial for creating a pattern my
dining room ceiling here and here was a fun project that I did when I first started
blogging, so please excuse the bad photos and styling...cringe! :)

dining room bling...

Do you know it has been exactly one year since I told you I was planning to update
my dining room, and get rid of the brown here.
I can't believe it's still not finished...maybe 2013 will be THE year!
I have a plan to change out the high-end cabinet and replace it with the free one we found
on the sidewalk in our neighborhood here..more on those plans after the holidays.

Speaking of holidays, I went with over the top more bling in the dining room,
but only on the chandelier and kept the rest of the room subdued to compensate.

Since we went with the unconventional tree here we had a lot of
ornaments we weren't using, so...I blinged out the chandelier!
The reflection in the mirror shows the nail head ceiling here.

The view from below, I simply hung a collection of high-end and low-end glass
 ornaments from their hooks.

I like the glam with paired our farm table.
The only other decor I have in the dining room are some crispy evergreen boughs,
pine cones, a glass bowl of more ornaments on the table, and simple arrangement
on the cabinet.

Remember how excited I was to find the chairs with the open backs,
in anticipation of using accent pillows that would be visible...I made the first ones.
It's called White Bunny Fur, it's soft, cozy, (and made a big mess) perfect for winter, and
my favorite is the texture it adds to the smooth high gloss finish on the chairs and the
rustic wood table.

I had the captain's chairs professionally re-upholstered, they had a roll on the
back I wanted removed and thought it was best left to the pros.  The Vermicelli fabric
brings in the modern look I'm going for (not there yet) and has a great texture, almost
embroidered looking.

A view from above...

Be sure to stop by tomorrow, the winner of the present will be announced.
Have a wonderful day, friends!

what motivates you?

Having house guests, inviting the neighborhood for a bbq, hosting holiday dinners,
your turn for the gourmet group, your annual Christmas party?
yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes
Telling your blog readers you're going to complete a project - YES!

Lisa @ Shine Your Light is one of the sweetest in the blogosphere,
and she has a St. Bernard (near and dear to my heart as I grew up with them).
Her announcement of her First Before & After Party was my motivation
to get moving on my dining room.
First Friday in January we posted what we would complete by the last Friday in January.
Come over and see the before & after projects, I've had some peeks and you're in for a treat!

BEFORE
Although I didn't get to all of my goals I shared here, I was happy to have this complete.

AFTER
New paint and nailhead ceiling you can read the details here and here.

I think I should link it up again next month to keep the motivation going! :)

focus!!!

In yesterday's post I said I was going to concentrate on the dining room
before starting another project.  That lasted about 12 hours! Seriously???
I was reading this great roundup of DIY lighting projects from Darlene at Fieldstone Hill,
this morning and saw this...

Isn't it gorgeous?!  What do you think it's made of?
It was created by Emily from the blog Newlywife, she and her cousin, both newlyweds,
share their projects, recipes and ideas. Amazing job!

I had this lamp just sitting in my basement waiting for some inspiration to strike!
I spared you the scary scene and brought it upstairs!

A Goodwill find for $35, not my typical score, but it was brand new, without a scratch.
I asked the clerk about it and she said sometimes they get items directly from Target, huh?
No details from her, but sure enough...here it is for $69.

This is what I've done so far...

Testing..1..2..3

First light coat (the trick to spray paint..light coats).
Check back on Monday for the reveal and the material it's made of.
And then I'll be back to focusing on the dining room!

Have a wonderful weekend friends,
hope you'll be focusing on FUN!

In all of my excitement over starting the new project...
I totally spaced I was supposed to share a completed project
at Lisa's Before and After Party, so you'll be getting another post from me today, too!
