Inspiring me Quilt: Blocks 16-24

Hi everyone!! After two months and a half since I sew some blocks, today I show you some more  for my Inspiring me Quilt, my own design using Sizzix dies and planning to get 100 blocks.
Well, here  they are nine new blocks, some with embroidery with DMC floss.
I´m sure you can find some inspiration and even take a chance to try some of these ones.

You can find some of these dies in more of my Inspiring me quilt blocks but I always try to find a new way  displaying the fabrics.
All of them are 8.5" finished.
No more words and here they are.

..............................................................********************...........................................................

Creative Curves - Part one

Hi, Trudi here from Quilting Prolifically.  I've been working on curved piecing, having started on a whole series of Double Wedding ring inspired quilts.  Ambitious I know, but I have one under my belt already, and a second started.  But sometimes all those curves can be a little intimidating, so I wondered if I could create the illusion of curves without the curved piecing.

Yes you can!

so armed with my Sizzix Bigshot Plus and the following dies

659838 Bigz Square 4 1/2"
659832 Bigz Half Square Triangle 4 1/2" pieced
659853 Bigz L Isosceles & Right 4 1/2" H
657611 Bigz Half Square Triangle 2 1/2" pieced

and my recently overflowing scrap bin   ....

I set to making a whole bunch of Half Square Traingles,

Because when it comes to quilts, I sort of love a big bed size quilt, I pieced and pressed these in sets of 10's so I could keep track I had the right amount made.  and if I lost count, it was easy to recount at a glance!

mix in a few squares, and the Shoo Fly blocks are done

all 18 of them!

next up was piecing the other block, but, with Festival of Quilts looming fast, my progress has been put on hold, while I finish my entries for delivery next week

so I'll be back next month to show you these blocks, how I pieced them, and how when you put both the blocks together you create the illusion of curves without a curve in sight.

Of course, add in a little quilting and the whole thing should come together nicely!

See you soon!  Trudi

Star Quilt: Part 4

Dies used: Half-Square Triangles, 4 1/2in Finished Square
                Square, 4in Finished (4 1/2in Unfinished)
                Star, Nested

There are 2 lessons that I really should have learnt from making my last quilt:

1. Multiply the amount of time expected to complete the quilting by 4

2. Buy 1 more reel of thread than required

Oh and maybe a third lesson should be added on:

3. Never say 'X should be finished in time for my next post'.

Sure enough the quilting has taken an enormous amount of time, largely because it's so dense to make sure the die-cut applique stars are well secured (I love those little stars so much alongside the big, pieced ones). I'm in complete awe of people who can quilt a substantial item in a day or so.

And of course my thread ran out within a whisker of the end, again. Ho hum.

Before basting and quilting a border was added all around the edge to increase the overall size to just larger than that of a single duvet so that when on the bed there won't be any duvet sticking out from underneath. The backing fabric is from Ikea, it was half price in the sale and although it is a heavier weight than is ideal, the larger apple print was too good to resist.

This quilt is for my son, Aidan he turned 8 last week and his birthday made a natural target deadline. Unfortunately it wasn't possible to meet that deadline but as things worked out his birthday became a bit of a non-event as he became ill with a throat infection the day before. As a result his trip to Legoland had to be cancelled and replaced with 2 visits to the doctor and he didn't manage a single mouthful of his own birthday cake. A re-run of his birthday once he's fully recovered is set to take place. In the meantime he can snuggle next to me under this quilt and watch films as I hand sew the binding down.

See you next time when this quilt should be...no, lesson 3, I won't say it.

Happy sewing!

My happy new quilt

This last week has been so lovely - but I haven't been tempted away from my sewing!
I've finished the quilt top that I showed you last week - it's only small but I do like it -
The finished size is 42 1/2" square - so makes a cute little lap quilt or even a picnic blanket.
The blocks are made using - http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/660183/sizzix-bigz-l-die-triangles-isosceles-right-3-1-2-h-assembled and the 3"finished square - http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/657608/sizzix-bigz-die-square-3-finished-3-1-2-unfinished
The fabrics and amounts you need are as follows -
Centre squares - 3 pieces 12" x 4" - more if you are going to cut motifs for each square
Star points - 3 pieces 36" x 4 1/2"
As I mentioned before I used the lovely fabric from the Fenton House collection by Guetermann for the stars.
White - 27" x 42" for the triangles and squares.
For the inner borders - dusky purple - 27" x 42" - cut into 2" strips and then cut 18 x 9 1/2" and 18 x 12 1/2"
For the sashing, outer border, and binding - 27" x 42" - cut into 2" strips.
- For the sashing cut 6 x 12 1/2", 2 x 39 1/2".
- For the outer border cut 2 x 39 1/2" and 2 x 42 1/2" ( now my fabric wasn't quite wide enough so I had to join an extra piece onto each end )
- the remaining strips are for the binding.
Backing and wadding - 45" square of each

Make the 9 blocks - you can see the layout for each block in my blog on 9th April.
Add the borders to each block.
Then join the blocks with the sashing, and then add the border.
Now this is as far as I've got this week - but all that is needed is to layer up the backing, wadding and top. Quilt by hand or machine - I'm not sure yet how I'm going to quilt - but hope to be able to show you what I've done by next week.
Binding uses the remaining strips, and voila! one small quilt completed
And now for something completely different - but with the same die -
If you join the triangles together in rows of 3, as pictured above, you can make easy hexagons!!
Or using 2 fabrics and staggering the rows you can make a zig zag design -
and that's just a starters - I like the idea of using one die for lots of different effects and projects - so next week I might still be on this die - you'll have to wait and see.
Hope you have a lovely weekend and make something fun.

New quilt started

I hope you've all been enjoying our lovely spring weather.
I am pleased to report that the baby quilts are not only finished but have been sent and received by at least one of the families - the one to America will obviously take a little longer!
I've also managed to find the quilt I had started for my granddaughter, Abi, it has eluded me for several weeks, and that is now well on the way to completion - so have been feeling quite pleased with myself.
The fabrics I showed you last week are coming together nicely -
I really like this die - http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/660183/sizzix-bigz-l-die-triangles-isosceles-right-3-1-2-h-assembled - because it makes these stars easy to make.
I partnered it with the 3"finished square - http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/657608/sizzix-bigz-die-square-3-finished-3-1-2-unfinished  and this makes a 9" finished block.
My dilemma now is that I'm not sure how to complete this - I think a trip to my local patchwork store is called for - I think maybe a plain fabric sashing, or maybe a few more blocks with plain fabrics - I'll have to let you know next week.
I'm also hoping to create a few more blocks using this die so that you can see how versatile it is, or there maybe another new die featured I'm not sure yet.
In the meantime have a lovely week, and keep sewing.

My Blue and Red quilt finished!!

Hi everybody! today I share with you my Blue and Red Quilt finished. I´m really in love how it turned out! I told you  in this post  and how I used  658322 Sizzix Bigz XL 25" Die - Half-Square Triangles, 2 1/2" Finished Square  to sew  twelve blocks.

After my blocks where finished  ( here it is the block ) as my own taste with 6 different print fabrics and some of  white..... I sew some strips ( 2.5" width)....

...... and finally some strips more with squares  using  Bigz XL 25" squares 2" finished. You can use  Bigz L die square 2" finished too if you don ´t want the longest.

Here it is my quilt in progress , so you can see the idea.

Then I added some more borders until it looked like perfect for me. I had enough fabric so I added a big red border.

Decisions, decisions to quilt..... finally I did some free motion inspiring me in a drawing in my curtains bedroom.

Size is 48"x 58"

It´s a very , very colorful quilt to start spring, don´t you thing so ?
I hope you like this idea using Sizzix dies.
I will do a little video with some more pics in details that you can see in my blog
Las labores de Mercedes  tomorrow or maybe on Monday.
Enjoy sewing and I see you in two weeks with a new project.
Love

.............................................................*******************............................................................

¡Hola a todo el mundo ! Hoy comparto contigo mi Quilt Azul y Rojo terminado.
