Snug as a bug!

That's what I'll be when this little lap quilt is complete -

I decided to try to use up all of the wool fabric that I had - so this really is a scrap quilt - which is already becoming a favourite before it's quite finished - maybe partly because the weather forecast is for much colder weather and I will be able to curl up under this beauty!
To get the most out of the pieces of wool I had I decided to cut more squares and rectangles in different sizes - I have already cut out rectangles using Bigz die 658113 - 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" unfinished

and squares using Bigz Die 659838 - 4 1/2" unfinished square - http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/659838/sizzix-bigz-die-square-4-finished-4-1-2-unfinished
using the Big Shot machine, and then
I also cut out some 3 1/2" unfinished squares with die http://www.sizzix.co.uk/catalog#q=657608
and some 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" unfinished rectangles - http://www.sizzix.co.uk/catalog#q=657625
My plan was to create 12" finished blocks - so I could make some using all of the 4"/8" shapes and some using the 3"/6" shapes --
The photo below shows the lay out for the 4"/8" pieces
and this photo shows the layout for the 3"/6" pieces. ( the photo is a cheat because the proper one came out a very strange colour so I laid out another block but didn't have enough rectangles!!!)
I had enough pieces to make a total of 16 blocks which I decided to lay the pieces out randomly, but took care to make sure that the colours and patterns were mixed in each row.
I joined the blocks into 4 rows of 4 and then joined the rows - so I have a lap quilt measuring 48 1/2" square.
Just a note that I still only used a 1/4" seam and I pressed the seams flat open on the wrong side to try to reduce bulk at the seams.
I like it so much I'm going to add another photo -
I'm going to back the quilt with either a plain wool or fleece - I'll show you a photo of it finished next week.
And just as I was going to finish this blog - one of my friends, Alex, suggested that there were enough pieces left to make a cushion so I trimmed the remaining pieces to 3 1/2" squares and laid them out like this -

which when stitched together became a cushion front -
which then just left this -
I'm very pleased to have used so much of these beautiful fabrics and will show you the finished quilt and cushion next week - along with a lovely valentine project.
Keep warm this week - I'm hoping for snow to go and play in with the grandchildren - we can hope.

Scandi Star Christmas quilt

Hello there - I'm happy to share that the Christmas quilt is coming along very nicely - and here's the photo to prove it -

and here is the complete top -

As each block is 16 1/2" this quilt only needed 12 blocks! and so the quilt can be cut and pieced in a day -add another day or a couple of evenings and this quilt will be complete - there is still time before Christmas!!
I used 12 different fabrics from Scandi Christmas fabrics and needed 40cms of each, and there is some left to create a pieced binding.
Cut the following pieces from each fabric using
 1 x 8" square die, http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/657265/sizzix-bigz-pro-die-square-8-finished-8-1-2-unfinished , and the Big Shot Pro http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/656250/sizzix-big-shot-pro-machine-only-periwinkle-w-standard-accessories ,

With the Big Shot and die 657520 - 8 x half square triangles - http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/657520/sizzix-bigz-l-die-half-square-triangles-5-finished-square ,

 4 quarter square triangles http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/657639/sizzix-bigz-xl-die-triangles-4-5-8-h-x-8-1-2-w-unfinished ,

and 4 squares - http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/659838/sizzix-bigz-die-square-4-finished-4-1-2-unfinished .

Mix and match the fabrics - I used dark reds with light greys, light reds with dark greys - so that each square is different.
The piecing instructions are on my blog for 13th November.
When the 12 blocks are completed, and pressed, lay them out in 4 rows of 3 blocks each.
Join the blocks together to complete the 4 rows and then join the rows together.
I will probably machine quilt for speed and then make a pieced binding to complete - I hope to have it ready to show you completed next week - and maybe some little girls snuggled up under it.
Well that will be another first for me - a Christmas quilt - hope you like it.

Quick Scandi Christmas block

How are you - I hope you're enjoying the build up to Christmas and that you have a lot more fun and enjoyment than stress.
Last year I thought it would be nice to start a family tradition - a quilt for Christmas eve - when the grandchildren can snuggle up under the quilt, in their Christmas pyjamas, and  enjoy watching a film together.
So we are only 6 weeks away from Christmas and I'm just starting the blocks for the quilt! Well that is progress, and even though I might not get it finished for this Christmas, I am moving in the right direction.
So I have chosen these lovely Scandi style fabrics, and plan to keep the design quite simple -

I just love these colours and designs.
I have used the following dies for my star block -
1 square in red with white stars.
With the Big Shot and die 657520 http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/657520/sizzix-bigz-l-die-half-square-triangles-5-finished-square , and red with cream heart outlines, I cut
 8 half-square triangles.
 4 x 4 1/2" squares.
To begin I stitched 2 half square triangles to each side of the quarter square triangle -
and then I stitched these to opposite sides of the 8 1/2" square -

and then I joined the 41/2" squares to each end of two of  the pieced triangles -
To complete the block these were stitched to  opposite sides of the centre square -
So that is my quick make for Christmas - it is a 16" finished block - so it could be a cushion or a table centre. I am still hoping that I can make a quilt for Christmas - and so I plan to use the same design for all of the quilt blocks, and mix and match the various fabrics I have from the range.
Will it be finished for this Christmas? - I have no idea, but, for the first time ever, I have the beginnings of a quilt for Christmas - I feel quite warm and cosy inside!
That's all for now - have fun.

triangles triangles everywhere!

Last week I mentioned I had recently got the new quilting dies and was hoping to have a play with the new chevron die this week. Well, as is quite usual for me, I got distracted by plans for a quilt using the chevron die and I've ordered fabrics to make that quilt so I haven't had a chance to play with it just yet as I'm waiting for the fabrics to arrive.

While I'm waiting I thought I'd pull out my Big Shot Pro (literally - it lives under my work table) and start playing with one of the other new dies, the isosceles triangle that finishes at 6 1/2" square (there is a smaller version that fits the big shot too - it ends up at 4 1/2" square)

I've never made a quilt using this block before, the thought of cutting out all of the triangles and then all of the background pieces using templates has put me off, but with the die it's fast and easy - and the 'dog ears' are already cut off so you can match up your points nice and easily too (which is a huge bonus!)

In no time at all I had cut and pieced 30 triangle blocks - literally in about an hour, so all I need to do now is have a think about layout and how big I want to go.  I think it's going to be a really pretty quilt and  so easy to piece together. I've had to set the blocks aside until I have finished some other bits and pieces, but I have the next batch cut and ready to piece next to my sewing machine so I can work on them in between other things. They'd make a really good scrap project too.

I cut from 2 fabrics at a time - one fabric for the triangle's sides (I cut 4 layers - folded so I would have the mirror images needed for the 2 sides of the triangle), and 2 layers of a second for the triangles to give me 2 identical blocks at a time. If you've ever been tempted by triangles like this but, like me, the templates idea put you off - then give this die a whirl. I bet you'd love it too!

finally cut into my Anna Maria Horner Bohemian

I need your help!

This weekend I started converting what was our dressing room (and by rights should be our spare bedroom) into a sewing room. I can't even begin to tell you how exciting that is for me! I used to rent a studio space but that didn't really work out all that well, although I loved it, it was expensive and I didn't use it as much as I should have because (quite honestly) I like being at home, in my jammies and my slippers

I currently use the dining room and kitchen to sew in, which is great to be able to spread out and take over the whole area but once I pick my kids up from school it becomes family space again and so from 3pm onwards my stuff is stacked in a huge mess either on the floor or pushed towards the far end of the dining table. It's not great when you're halfway through working on something, and it's especially not great when you're halfway through cutting stuff out - I always seem to end up losing bits and pieces or forget how far I've got with my cutting.

My new space isn't huge - it's about 10 ft square so I have to be very careful in how I plan where things go. I have my sewing machine, of course, a big shot pro (which is a big machine!) as well as my big shot and all my dies. The big shot pro will probably live on the floor under my cutting table and be lifted onto it when I use it (even as I'm typing that my arms are aching at the thought. But won't I have amazing upper arms with all that lifting?!)

At the moment it's pretty much a blank canvas. Eventually I'd like to get some nice flooring but to save money I've whitewashed the floorboards and I've seen a big rug that will fit perfectly and add a bright splash of colour. I'm also thinking that the big wall straight ahead will be the perfect place for a design wall (so I don't need to worry too much about my paint job...I'll admit painting and decorating is not one of my strong points!)

Untitled

I'll have a lot of shelves built into this unit pictured below (you can see I've started with those) but I'd love your suggestions on storage for my dies because right now they live in a sideboard which will stay downstairs in the dining room (and will again have dining room things in it - fancy that! A dining room sideboard with actual dining ware in!)

Untitled

How do you store yours? How should I store mine? How should I store everything to be quite honest - so it's neat but easily accessible. I don't have room for more furniture, I do have wall space for shelving but I'd quite like to have my precious room to be (potentially) tidy. It will probably not be all that tidy at all, but if I have the systems in place I'm more likely to be tidy - right? I really value your opinions, I have to admit I'm a bit stuck and I'm not sure what to do with them. I also have a tendency to rush out and buy a load of impractical storage that ends up being completely useless!!!
