Marble Man just sent this to me in an email. I think I'm going to try it!
FORTUNE'S FAVORITE RECIPES: Christmas Rum Cake
1 or 2 quarts rum 1 tbsp. baking powder 1 cup butter 1 tsp. soda 1 tsp. sugar 1 tbsp. lemon juice 2 large eggs 2 cups brown sugar 2 cups dried assorted fruit 3 cups chopped English walnuts
Before you start, sample the rum to check for quality. Good, isn't it? Now select a large mixing bowl, measuring cup, etc. Check the rum again. It must be just right. Be sure the rum is of the highest quality. Pour one cup of rum into a glass and drink it as fast as you can. Repeat. With an electric mixer, beat one cup butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add 1 seaspoon of tugar and beat again. Meanwhile, make sure the rum teh absolutely highest quality. Sample another cup. Open second quart as necessary. Add 2 orge laggs, 2 cups of fried druit and beat untill high. If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaters, just pry it loose with a screwdriver. Sample the rum again, checking for toncisticity. Next sift 3 cups of baking powder, a pinch of rum, a seaspoon of toda and a cup of pepper or salt (it really doesn't matter). Sample some more. Sift 912 pint of lemon juice. Fold in schopped butter and strained chups. Add bablespoon of brown gugar, or whatever color you have. Mix mell. Grease oven and turn cake pan to 350 gredees and rake until poothtick comes out crean.
So there I was back in July, cranking my brain over and over to come up with a readable post for my blog. And I took a much-needed break to air out my brain case and let life happen. Now, I'm brimming with things to talk about and I don't know where to start.
~
Two weeks ago, Marble Man and I climbed into our sweet little miata, put the top down, slathered on some sunscreen, and drove the 10 hours up north to Longport, NJ for a week-long family reunion and beach getaway. Despite driving toward this as we approached Absecon Island,
the weather was perfect during our stay: cool breezes and hot sun. No worries - we kept cool
and paddled into the surf when we got too hot
and enjoyed the sight of kids being kids in the sand.
My favorite thing we did that week? We drove to Atlantic City to see Patti Lupone perform here
Have you ever had the pleasure of seeing her on stage? She was personable, very funny, and has a throaty, sexy singing voice so powerful she didn't need the microphone she held.
She told funny stories related to her many stage performances. She didn't perform this for us, but the video will give you an idea of how much fun we had...
After the show, Marble Man's brother and his wife talked us into heading to the slots to try our luck. Still smiling from the show,
we walked through the shining temple of prosperity that is the Borgata Hotel to see some of the Dale Chihuly glass sculptures there,
Marble Man, sister-in-law J, and brother W
and then proceeded to win back the price of our show tickets! A great night all around.
Usually, I try to have a few days between posts. However, this was too good to keep. The weekends are when Marble Man and I get caught up with the tv recordings we've made during the previous week. Yesterday, we found a gem from The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Airing on CBS right after David Letterman, Ferguson spends the first two minutes of every show performing some sort of lunacy to convince viewers to stay up for the rest of the show. Ferguson's attitude is: it's 12:30 AM, only pot heads and insomniacs are up and watching, so anything goes. On June 3, 2009, he outdid himself with this performance to Istanbul (not Constantinople) by They Might Be Giants:
(I'm especially fond of the little guy wearing the leather shorts and playing the concertina. In my book, anybody willing to dress themselves like that for the nation to watch is A-Okay!)
I can usually rely on Ferguson for a fullout belly laugh, tears streaming down the face, and endorphin-induced euphoria. His monologue is the best of all the late night shows, in my opinion. He doesn't use cue cards, and he's very witty, although sometimes he does channel his inner 14 year-old-boy. More often than not, the early part of his show is worth watching.
Ahhh... if only more tv shows were this flamboyantly irreverent and funny. I hope you go through the rest of your day feeling those endorphins!
As I mentioned here, I have a passion for dancing (though I don't possess much grace on the floor). I adore seeing professionals do their thing, whether they're doing ballroom, modern, jazz, belly, or even pole dancing. If done well, dancing is a wonder to behold. I'm an avid fan of ABC's Dancing With The Stars - it's great fun to watch people out of their element working hard and overcoming obstacles while training themselves to move beautifully.
Last night's episode was the quarter-final of this season's competition, and it was a blast. Seventeen-year-old Olympic gold-medalist, Shawn Johnson, busted clean out of her shell to deliver a quickstep that blew my socks right off. This clip includes the rehearsal scenes as well as the judges comments (the performance begins around 1:28 if you want to skip the early stuff). I find it so interesting that the celebrities struggle to learn their routines in a week fraught with drama, and then come on stage and nail it.
Her performance reminded me of old-time Hollywood movies, back when studio heads required all their stars to learn to tap dance. Here's a clip of Bob Hope and Jimmy Cagney doing their hilarious schtick:
Welcome to the Theater of The Absurd. This arrived in an email today and gave me a good giggle. Then I was shaking my head in disbelief. "Huh? Is this guy really serious?" Then I googled it and found it was the comedy duo, John Clarke and Bryan Dawe. OK, now that we know it's a comedy routine, we can enjoy!
Thanks to everyone who has participated in the giveaway contest so far. For those who haven't, but still want to, it's not too late to enter.
