Book Review: Kissing the Highland Twin by Amy Jarecki

When Lord Andrew MacGalloway agrees to attend a house party, posing as his twin, he does so with good intentions. After all, it wouldn’t be fair to his brother’s fiancé if he did not assume his twin’s mantle. Though an inconvenience, he fully intends to make the event pleasant for Miss Eugenia Radcliffe, engaging her in idle chat, long, chaperoned walks, and dancing the appropriate number of waltzes.

Except carefully laid plans when one is impersonating his brother tend to go awry, especially given identical twins are not exact replicas of one another.

When Eugenia discovers Andrew is not the man to whom she is betrothed, she is humiliated and distraught. Prior to arriving at the party, she suspected her fiancé would not honor his promise of marriage, and now she has proof.

With no other choice, Eugenia renounces the engagement. Unable to remain in Scotland a moment longer, she flees. Andrew feels dreadful for this untoward turn of events and races after the lass, determined to save her from ruin. But does the resolute beauty want to be rescued by the dashing Highlander, or might she have other adventures in mind?

                                                 MY REVIEW:

Kissing the Highland Twin (The MacGalloways #4)Kissing the Highland Twin by Amy Jarecki
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a funny story of how these twins sometimes have covered for each other but the looks are the only thing the same. The personalities are so different.
When Miss Eugenia meets Andrew posing as Phillip she ends up finding him engaging , which is different than when she first met him. But she likes him a lot. Then she finds out about the switch and she is devastated. At this point Andrew has already fallen for her and now what should he do. Thanks to Oliver Heber Books and NetGalley for the book to review.

Book Review: Blind Tiger by Sandra Brown

                                                       Kindle Edition, 448 pages
Published August 3rd 2021 by Grand Central Publishing
                                                 buy from Amazon

The year 1920 comes in with a roar in this rousing and suspenseful novel by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sandra Brown. Prohibition is the new law of the land, but murder, mayhem, lust, and greed are already institutions in the Moonshine Capitol of Texas.

Thatcher Hutton, a war-weary soldier on the way back to his cowboy life, jumps from a moving freight train to avoid trouble . . . and lands in more than he bargained for. On the day he arrives in Foley, Texas, a local woman goes missing. Thatcher, the only stranger in town, is suspected of her abduction, and worse. Standing between him and exoneration are a corrupt mayor, a crooked sheriff, a notorious cathouse madam, a sly bootlegger, feuding moonshiners . . . and a young widow whose soft features conceal an iron will.

What was supposed to be a fresh start for Laurel Plummer turns to tragedy. Left destitute but determined to dictate her own future, Laurel plunges into the lucrative regional industry, much to the dislike of the good ol’ boys, who have ruled supreme. Her success quickly makes her a target for cutthroat competitors, whose only code of law is reprisal. As violence erupts, Laurel and—now deputy—Thatcher find themselves on opposite sides of a moonshine war, where blood flows as freely as whiskey.

MY REVIEW:

Blind TigerBlind Tiger by Sandra Brown
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is set in the 1920's during Prohibiton. Blind Tiger is another word for Speakeasy. A speakeasy is a place where alcohol beverages are sold illegally. A place of business would have a backroom that only certain people would know about. Reading about all this I did learn a few things.
Thatcher Hutton is a war soldier and on his way home he stows away on a train and this is where his life becomes complicated.
Laurel Plummer is married to a man who was in the war and came home a different person. He uproots her and their baby to go live with his dad, who didn't even know if his son was alive or dead.
The town in Texas is full of a lot of criminals. A corrupt mayor, a crooked sheriff, a cathouse, and moonshiners, which makes this full of adventure.
I loved the sheriff, even though he is crooked. He doesn't want to be and we learn more about him throughout the book.
Laurel and her father in law made me chuckle a few times and the interaction between them was of a great relationship.

Book Review: Bridgerton collection Volume 1 by Julia Quinn

                                                    Kindle Edition, 1053 pages
Published May 26th 2020 by Avon
                                                    Buy on Amazon

The first three Bridgerton books all in one e-book volume! Includes The Duke and I, The Viscount Who Loved Me, and An Offer From a Gentleman.

Set between 1813 and 1827, the Bridgerton Series is a collection of eight novels, each featuring one of the eight children of the late Viscount Bridgerton. The Bridgertons are currently a Shondaland series for Netflix.

                                                    MY REVIEW:

Bridgerton Collection, Volume One (Bridgertons #1-3)Bridgerton Collection, Volume One by Julia Quinn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Duke and I : In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound. From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood. A proper duke should be imperious and aloof. A young, marriageable lady should be amiable… but not too amiable.
Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter. The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London. Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit. But no one truly desires her. She is simply too deuced honest for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen.

The Viscount Who Loved Me :
the gossip columnists have it wrong. Anthony Bridgerton hasn't just decided to marry—he's even chosen a wife! The only obstacle is his intended's older sister, Kate Sheffield—the most meddlesome woman ever to grace a London ballroom. The spirited schemer is driving Anthony mad with her determination to stop the betrothal, but when he closes his eyes at night, Kate is the woman haunting his increasingly erotic dreams...

An Offer From a Gentleman:
Sophie Beckett never dreamed she'd be able to sneak into Lady Bridgerton's famed masquerade ball—or that "Prince Charming" would be waiting there for her! Though the daughter of an earl, Sophie has been relegated to the role of servant by her disdainful stepmother. But now, spinning in the strong arms of the debonair and devastatingly handsome Benedict Bridgerton, she feels like royalty. Alas, she knows all enchantments must end when the clock strikes midnight.

I fell in love with this series from the beginning. The Bridgerton family is a big family and their mom really rules the roost and they all better listen to her. She has been rasing the kids for quite a few years as widow. Though the young men seem to have quite a reputation, deep down they are great men. I can't wait to keep reading this series and then binge watch the Netflix series.

Fans of Hannah Howell and Diana Gabaldon will love this Scottish romance that combines a high-stakes action and sizzling romance.

Emma Grant has been sheltered and underestimated her entire life. Her blindness may set her apart, but she's just as fierce and loyal as any of her clansmen. So when she catches word that her brother's best friend is in jail, she doesn't hesitate to race to the brawny Highlander's rescue.

Laird Ciar MacDougall is on a vital mission for Scotland when he witnesses a murder—and then is blamed for the death and thrown into a Redcoat prison to rot. He never thought he'd be broken out by a slip of a lass and her faithful hound. But now they're outlaws on the run. And as their enemies circle ever closer, he will have to choose between saving his country or the woman who's captured his heart.

I loved Emma. People treated her like she was a fragile thing but she is far from fragile. She is a characters from the first book of the series and I am so glad that we got to have a story for her. Emma has had a crush on Laird Clar for years and even though she can't see him, she can know him with her heart.
I believe this is the last book of this series.

Blog Tour: Close Up by Amanda Quick

Close Up (Burning Cove #4)

Welcome to Burning Cove, California where 1930s Hollywood glamour conceals a ruthless killer…

Vivian Brazier never thought life as an art photographer would include nightly wake-up calls to snap photos of grisly crime scenes or headshots for aspiring male actors. Although she is set on a career of transforming photography into a new art form, she knows her current work is what’s paying the bills.

After shooting crime scene photos of a famous actress, the latest victim of the murderer the press has dubbed the “Dagger Killer,” Vivian notices eerie similarities to the crime scenes of previous victims—details that only another photographer would have noticed—details that put Vivian at the top of the killer’s target list.

Nick Sundridge has always been able to “see” things that others don’t, coping with disturbing dreams and visions. His talent, or as he puts it—his curse—along with his dark past makes him a recluse, but a brilliant investigator. As the only one with the ability to help, Nick is sent to protect Vivian. Together, they discover the Dagger Killer has ties to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood royalty and high society. It is a cutthroat world of allure and deception that Vivian and Nick must traverse—all in order to uncover the killer who will stop at nothing to add them to their gallery of murders.

                            MY REVIEW:

Close Up (Burning Cove #4)Close Up by Amanda Quick
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Close Up is the 4th book in the series. I did not realize that when I read it but I don't think it mattered. It felt like a stand a lone.
Vivien Brazier is a photographer. She wants to use her photography as art and have it in galleries but for now she takes pictures at scenes of murders and fires and sells to papers. As she takes pics of a murdered actress, she notices there is something similar to the murder of another one. Now Vivien is at the top of hit list.
Nick Sundridge is someone who can see things in his dreams and now he has been told that Vivien's life is in danger. So he shows up at her door to try to convince her. She has been put into danger and needs to relocate for a short while. But she is also trying to get her foot into art galleries.
I did enjoy this book a lot. Vivien is a very independent woman and her parents are not happy with her. This does have instant love in it just as a warning.

You can feel the chemistry between these 2 as you keep reading. Learning about King's past has you realising just how bad of a person he has been and why. Book Review: Last Night With the Earl #2 by Kelly Bowen

Last Night with the Earl (The Devils of Dover, #2)

Earl. War hero. Notorious rake. After the Battle of Waterloo, Eli Dawes was presumed dead-and would have happily stayed that way. He's no longer the reckless young man he once was, and only half as pretty. All he wants is to hide away in his country home, where no one can see his scars. But when he tries to sneak into his old bedroom in the middle of the night, he's shocked to find someone already there.

Rose Hayward remembers Eli as the arrogant lord who helped her late fiancé betray her. Finding him stealing into her art studio doesn't correct her impression. Her only thought is to get him to leave immediately. Yet the tension between them is electric, and she can't help but be drawn to him. He might be back from the dead, but it's Rose who is suddenly feeling very, very much alive.

Book Review: A Duke In the Night #1 by Kelly Bowen

A Duke in the Night (The Devils of Dover, #1)

Duke. Scoundrel. Titan of business. August Faulkner is a man of many talents, not the least of which is enticing women into his bedchamber. He's known-and reviled-for buying and selling companies, accumulating scads of money, and breaking hearts. It's a reputation he wears like a badge of honor, and one he intends to keep.

Clara Hayward, the headmistress of the Haverhall School for Young Ladies, on the other hand, is above reproach. Yet when she's reunited with August all she can think of is the way she felt in his arms as they danced a scandalous waltz ten long years ago. Even though her head knows that he is only back in her life to take over her family's business, her heart can't help but open to the very duke who could destroy it for good.

Blog Tour: Wild, Wild Rake by Janna MacGregor

ABOUT WILD, WILD RAKE:

Wild, Wild Rake, the next sweeping, emotional, witty, and sharp romance in the Cavensham Heiresses series from beloved author Janna MacGregor.

Her first marriage was an epic fail.

Lady Avalon Warwyk never did love her husband. Arrogant, selfish, and cruel, it’s a blessing when she’s widowed and left to raise her son all by herself. Finally, Avalon can live freely and do the work she loves: helping fallen women become businesswomen. She’s lived these past ten years with no desire to remarry—that is, until Mr. Devan Farris comes to town.

Can he convince her to take another chance at happily ever after?

Devan Farris—charming vicar, reputed rake, and the brother of Avalon’s son’s guardian—is reluctantly sent to town to keep tabs on Avalon and her son. Devan wishes he didn’t have to meddle in her affairs; he’s not one to trod on a woman’s independent nature and keen sense of convictions. But she’ll have nothing to do with a vicar with a wild reputation—even though he’s never given his heart and body to another. If only he could find a way to show Avalon who he really is on the inside—a good, true soul looking for its other half. But how can prove that he wants to love and care for her. . .until death do they part?

                     MY REVIEW:

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Lady Avalon Warwyck was married off to a man she didn't love and he didn't love her. In fact he bed her once and got her pregnant and that was the end of that. He kept a mistress which he ended up flaunting in front of he because that was his love. Then not to long after that she became a widow. She lives freely and helps woman who are in dire straits and become businesswomen. Avalon vows she will never get married again or do as a man says. Then Devan Farris comes into her life. He was sent to spy on her by his brother who is in charge of Avalon's son's fate into his teen years. Devan is also the Vicar and now in her town. He has always called her Lady Warlock. He has a wild reputation with the women. But he has never given his body or heart to anyone and he will prove it to her and show his true self to her.
I really enjoyed reading this book and the characters were a lot of fun together. There was instant chemistry between them.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins for the ARC to review.

Excerpt from Wild, Wild Rake by Janna MacGregor
Avalon read the first line in the letter from her son’s guardian, Gavin Farris, the Earl of Larkton. By all appearances the words resembled something innocuous, purely designed to lull a person into thinking it contained real concern with a touch of whimsical affection.
My dearest lady, I do hope this finds you and your intrepid son well.
“Avalon, did you hear the news?” Seventeen, on the cusp of eighteen years of age, Avalon’s sister, Lady Sophia Cavensham, looked up from her embroidery and smiled. Her gaze darted to her friend Miss Penelope Rowley, the one and only niece of the wealthiest gentry landowner in the shire. Though she was two years older than Sophia, Penelope had become somewhat of a fixture at Warwyk Hall over the last six months since she’d moved to her aunt and uncle’s home. The two women were inseparable.
Penelope let out a dramatic sigh then collapsed in a swoon across the pink-and-gold brocade sofa. In the process, she kneed the table, upsetting the delicate pink china cup and saucer. “Oww.”
Avalon tried to ignore their chatter. The Earl of Larkton’s correspondence had increased in frequency over the last several months. The weekly letters were turning into biweekly posts. Each one wanted more and more control over the Warwyk estate and more decision-making control over her ten-year-old son, Thane Pearce, the Marquess of Warwyk. She doubled her concentration on the letter as she read the entire first paragraph.
The purpose of my correspondence is to inform you that I’ve appointed a new vicar for the village of Thistledown. The man comes with impeccable standing and experience. In addition, his educational training is second to none. He’s a protégé of Lord Bishop Marlowe.
“He’s extraordinary.” Sophia’s dreamlike whisper floated through the air like a dandelion seed.
“He’s . . . simply exquisite.” Penelope’s voice joined Sophia’s in a chorus of dazzled fascination.
My dear Marchioness, it’s my pleasure to announce that my brother—
Avalon swallowed the sudden onrush of bile that marched up her throat. It couldn’t be. Fate was not that hateful.
“Mr. Devan—” Sophia sighed.
“Farris.” Penelope finished the sentence and slowly drew her hand against her forehead as if saying his name caused her to faint.
“No. Not him.” Avalon murmured the words aloud. The sanctimonious prig had arrived to make her life a living hell. Avalon grimaced to keep from casting her accounts. Now she was just exaggerating like the girls. She wasn’t really physically sick, but the news could make a person ill. “When did he arrive in the village?”
Clueless as to how the news affected her older sister, Sophia scooted to the edge of the crimson-and-white striped club chair that sat adjacent to Avalon’s matching one. “Two days ago. Penelope and I just happened to be walking in front of the vicarage when we saw the Earl of Larkton’s coach arrive. The new vicar followed behind on horseback.”
Penelope nodded vigorously as if Sophia’s story needed affirmation.
Avalon wanted to roll her eyes. The two women “never just happen” to do anything. They orchestrated and connived everything from shopping to men. God save anyone who crossed their paths. If one of the girls took a shine to any of the ton’s marriageable men, then London’s finest would soon understand what it meant to be hunted.
As the girls continued their chatter, Avalon devoted her full attention to the rest of the letter. Better to finish the horrid task, then take a long walk through her gardens. Though it was January and bitterly cold outside, a brisk hour of exercise would help Avalon clear some of her unease at the news that Mr. Devan Farris had invaded her village.
I’ve considered your request that the young marquess continue his studies at home, but at the age of ten, his interests would best be served by attending Eton sooner rather than later. That’s where boys turn into men. Your suggestion that he attend Harrow won’t do. His father had insisted that I promise he attend Eton. However, since his Latin skills are somewhat lacking, I’ve decided to hire my brother, Mr. Farris, to tutor him in the subject.
Her blood simmered at the words. The earl’s declaration was nothing more than gilding the lily. Everyone within fifty miles of London knew that Devan Farris sought to marry an heiress. Until he found one, the fortune-hunting vicar thought to use her son’s marquisate to pay double for his services. Since her son’s estate paid for the vicar’s wages, Mr. Farris would receive another wage from the coffers for tutoring lessons.

But what really brought her blood to boil was that the smug vicar would be nosing into her business, and that wouldn’t do at all. She and only she ruled the parish with a fair and impartial hand. No one, including Devan Farris, would upset her world.
