Selvage Quilt Exhibit at Brookside Quiltworks

Twenty of my selvage quilts are on exhibit at Brookside Quiltworks in S. Egremont, MA from now until the end of May. You can enter a free drawing to win the Monkey Wrench quilt. There are selvage pincushions with beaded pinsies available for purchase as well as patterns for many of the  quilts in the exhibit.

And the gorgeous selection fabrics in this shop will inspire you too. I have my eye on her new shipment of Aboriginal prints. Next time.

This is my mom, Mary. We visited the exhibit yesterday, chatted with Catherine Kane the owner of Brookside Quiltworks, and then had a delicious lunch at Patisserie Lenox in nearby Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

"Red Zinger" (above) is a popular favorite. Click here to see Zinger variations.

I love the optical illusion in "Glass Tumbling Blocks" above.

Riel Nason Featured in The Quilt Life!

Have you seen the June issue of  The Quilt Life from AQS? They have a feature article about our very own Riel Nason, selvage quilter (and author) from Canada! The interesting article is written by Meg Cox.

See the orange quilt? (above, right) "Mummy Wants Fabric." Haha.

This issue also has a question-and-answer section by Gwen Marston. I'm enjoying this magazine!

Dinah's Fabulous All-Stripe Selvage Quilt!

Dinah Snyder of Ohio just made this fantastic striped selvage quilt; yes it's all stripes. This quilt measures 80" x 80." That's a lot of striped selvages! Dinah says this is a comfortable quilt that she will use a lot. Isn't this quilt beautiful? I love it. (The pink and yellow photo is the back.)

Dinah was inspired by the striped quilts of Marianne Haak of The Quilting Edge blog. Take a look at these, especially if you have the rest of the day available for sewing! (see photo below)

Selvage Star by Twin Fibers

Take a look at this beautiful selvage star quilt made by twins from Michigan, Jennifer and Jessica at Twin Fibers. I like the echo quilting. And see the binding in the photo below. So clever. There's a link to a tutorial for adding that green stripe. The Selvage Star pattern is by Sarah London.

Selvage Arrangement - Close Together

Here's a good detail photo of a selvage block where the quilter arranged the selvages close together. You can't see any of the printed part of the fabric. It gives a modern, white, light-and-airy look. It's from the blog: Oh Frannson! You need a lot of selvages to do this, using only the part with the writing and color windows, but it looks good. What's your selvage style? Close like this, or spaced further apart to show the fabric print? (I show the prints, but I like this look (above) too.)

Silk Cigar Ribbon Quilt Inspiration

This antique silk cigar ribbon quilt is offered for sale by Laura Fisher Quilts in NYC for $4,500. But are you thinking what I'm thinking? I'm seeing a selvage quilt design in here!

This is my version of a silk cigar ribbon sort of quilt. It's one of the quilts in my book "Quilts from the Selvage Edge." I'll be leading a workshop in CT showing how to make this quilt.

Susan's Selvage Coins Quilt

This lovely selvage coins quilt was made by Susan in Pennsylvania. Her blog is Hanging On by a Needle and Thread. I like all the soft colors paired with the solid green. And look at all that cross-hatch quilting! Nice job, Susan!

Thanks to Pokeytown Kim for alerting me to this selvage news.

My Sister Eileen's Selvage Quilts

My sister Eileen Lovett of Rhode Island came to my house yesterday for a reunion, and she brought some selvage quilts to show us. Didn't she do a great job? These three patterns are in my book "Quilts from the Selvage Edge." You can see her peeking over the top of the quilt above.

We're still friends with the girls who were our next-door neighbors when we were growing up, so we've known each other from day one. Three girls in our family, three in theirs, and our two moms. We had a great time. Eileen made up a contest called the "Mother Goose Awards" where our two moms awarded ribbons for tons of different categories; the prize was the "Goody Two-Shoes" award (baby-sized clear, sparkly jellies, $5 from Walmart) won by Sandi in the pink top. Lots of laughs. Then we looked at old photos of our birthday parties from the 1960's. Cool dresses. Haha.

Zigzag Selvage Quilt on Etsy

This delightful selvage quilt was made by my blogland friend Elena McDowell in Texas and it's for sale in her Etsy store for $180. It measures 30" x 37." I like the black and white striped fabric in this quilt. It looks like bold stitching from a distance. Elena makes the most amazing selvage quilts and other items, many of which (40!) have been featured here on the Selvage Blog.

Nancy's Selvage Circles Quilt

This stunning Selvage Circles queen-size quilt was made by Nancy and she lives in nearby Warren, CT! I have to meet this lady who is making selvage quilts fifteen minutes from my house. Look at the awesome curves in this quilt! It's offered for sale in her Etsy store for $700. She also makes handbags. Nancy loves bright colors and unexpected color combinations, and she has so many ideas for things to make she hardly knows where to start. We hear you Nancy.

Bari's New Selvage Twister

Bari of Springfield, MO made this pretty blue "Lil Twister." Take a look at her blog to see more. She adapted Jackie's tutorial to make this selvage version. Jackie's quilt was made using silk dupioni. I actually watched her making it when I visited recently, and I was astonished to see how it went together. Nice job Bari and Jackie!

Selvage Snowman Quilt by Riel Nason in Canada

Riel Nason in New Brunswick, Canada made this big snowman quilt using over 700 selvages! Even the snowflakes are made from selvages. Isn't it awesome? She has lots of close up photos (including a tutorial about making those snowflakes) on her blog: The Q and the U. Bravo!

The snowman in this photo is 20 feet tall!

Stunning Selvage Quilt from Texas

Quilter Liz Broussard from Houston, Texas calls this quilt "Salvaged Selvages Sloped." The selvages were given to her by a fellow Stashbuster (a Yahoo group). Liz used telephone book pages for the foundations. Talk about upcycling! I love the zig zags going on here. It reminds me of the rippling pattern of water in a swimming pool. And the quiet black border is perfect. Great job, Liz!

Selvage Quilt from Pleasant Home

This light and airy selvage quilt top is the creation of Jodi Nelson in Oregon, of the Pleasant Home blog. I really like this one. The selvages are close together so there is lots of white.

Thank you to Vicki in Australia who gave me the heads up about this quilt.

Wow, I really like Bari's curved feather quilting! And the corner blocks look great too. Awesome job, Bari!
