June Calender's New Quilt!

June Calender from Cape Cod, Massachusetts finished her "Whirligig"quilt and it's a beauty. She wrote about this quilt on her blog: Calender Pages.
June enjoys taking a liberated approach to both fabric selection and piecing. Nice job!

If this fan block looks familiar, it's from my Ferris Wheel pattern. It's fun; take a look.

June Calender's Poet Selvage Quilt!

June Calender of Cape Cod, Massachusetts and the Calender Pages blog made this selvage quilt that features 12 women poet's pictures and some of their poetry. There are another 24 poets included in the borders. These photos show the quilt on exhibit at the Bayberry Quilters annual quilt show in August. Not surprisingly, the quilt won a Viewer's Choice ribbon. June was making a statement about women poets being marginalized by critics and academics, hence the selvages. Very creative, June!

June Calender's New Quilt

June Calender just finished this patriotic center medallion quilt. She says she was inspired by my Adirondack quilt. June enjoyed making this quilt and may make another one for her just-out-of -law-school grandson for Christmas. Lucky guy!

This is June's fan quilt in progress. She says making fans is easy. I agree. See easy fan pattern here
June's blog is appropriately called Calender Pages
P.S. She lives on lovely Cape Cod! I imagine her front yard looks like this, but I can't say for sure. :)

Selvage Quilts from Cape Cod

June Calender on Cape Cod has been making selvage quilts. The top photo is a little quilt (a "quiltie") that she made for a swap. June is originally from the Midwest. She lived in New York City for a long time, then moved to the Cape. I met her at the Empire Quilters guild in NYC. She has an interesting blog where she tells about her new life in MA and the projects she's working on: http://www.calenderpages.blogspot.com/ Hi June! I like that "Gems on Point" quilt.

June Calender's Latest Selvage Quilt

June Calender is a member of Empire Quilters in NYC. She is always up to something interesting like traveling to Africa and creating beautiful things with selvages. She made a reversible selvage quilt, a pretty selvage jacket and a big series of selvage postcards. Click on "June Calender" in the Index to see all these projects, or visit her blog at www.calenderpages.blogspot.com. Nice job, June!

June Calender Made 50 Selvage Cards

We've been keeping an eye on June Calender of New York City as she has been feverishly making selvage postcards. A few weeks ago, she just decided that 50 is enough for now, and she's moving on to other things. Like taking a trip to Africa! It was on her "bucket list." My guess is that June would definitely sit in the Onion Chair.

Before she goes on her trip, she will seriously clean her living quarters so it's "ship-shape" when she returns. What an interesting concept. Visit her blog at: www.calenderpages.blogspot.com.

June Calender's Selvage Postcards

June Calender of NYC is on a selvage postcard-making binge! Take a look at these fairy tale theme prints surrounded by selvages (in a modified courthouse steps arrangement). What a fun idea.

See June's blog to read more about her project: www.calenderpages.blogspot.com.

Two New Ideas from June Calender

June Calender of New York City is busy making selvage postcards. This project was inspired by a postcard that she received from Sam Farman of Perth, Australia. (Sam and her selvage postcards have been featured here on the Selvage Blog.)

First, June tried weaving her polka dot selvages (new idea #1). Next, she arranged her selvavges horizontally. Finally, she put a fabric with a picture on it in the center, then surrounded it with selvages (new idea #2, not shown). I think that's a great idea for a selvage quilt. My log cabin has solid red center squares, but I like the idea of using novelty prints in that spot. Thanks, June.

June Calender's Selvage Jacket!

Take a look at June Calender's selvage jacket in progress. She started with an over-sized sweatshirt. Then she proceeded to cut the ribbing off the cuffs, neck, and the bottom edge. Finally, she cut up the front to make it a "cardigan," and cut up the sides and along the sleeve seams so she could easily add the selvages. To get the whole story from June, see her blog at: http://www.calenderpages.blogspot.com/. She describes it to you step by step.

I sure hope we get to see June modeling this fancy jacket at our next Empire Quilt Guild meeting. We meet at the Fashion Institute; how appropriate is that?

Selvage Pillow - Log Cabin Style

Have you noticed that Australian selvage quilter Jodie's style of arranging selvages is similar to that of New York selvage quilter June Calender? They use just the white stripe selvage with little or no printed fabric. That makes their quilts primarily white, so the writing and the color windows really stand out. I like that one selvage on the back. What a good idea. Keep up the great work, Jodie!

You can see more of Jodie's work at http://www.vintagericrac.blogspot.com/.

June Calender's Reversible Selvage Quilt

You may remember reading about June's reversible selvage quilt-in-progress this summer. Well, she finished it and it's stunning! I love how the turquoise fabrics look so nice with the selvages, and how the few dark selvages add sparkle to the predominately white blocks. The selvage blocks look like a tightly woven arrangement, and the triangles in the border add the perfect touch! The square patches of Rowan prints are beautiful together. (I love that orange one mixed in with all the blue/greens!) You know a quilt is a keeper when you just can't stop looking at it. Nice job, June!
You can read more about June's selvage quilt and other endeavors on her blog at: http://www.calenderpages.blogspot.com/. June is a fellow member of Empire Quilters in NYC.

Meet June Calender of New York City!

June Calender and I are both members of the Empire Quilters guild. We meet at the Fashion Institute which I think is pretty cool. I like to see the live fashion show as I walk to and from the meetings. (I tried to share half of my chicken salad sandwich with a very thin model one day at Starbucks. No luck, but we had a nice chat.)

June has been saving selvages for a long time, and now she is making a reversible quilt with selvages on one side. She is quilting the blocks as she adds selvages. Each of the blocks in the photo already has batting and backing. I guess if it's reversible, you can't really call it "backing." I will be intrested to see how she attaches all the blocks. Notice how she uses only the white stripe; very little of the printed fabric shows. You can read about her quilting projects, travels, and thoughts on her blog: http://www.calenderpages.blogspot.com/.
