Slightly Distracted and Corroded

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/05/slightly-distracted-and-corroded.html Tim Holtz Masculine Mixed Media Card 1

Hello, friends! It's time for anew challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog, and this time around Jenny is hosting. She calls her challenge theme 'Oh Man!', and this is how she describes it:

"Fathers Day may be a way off yet but there are always other occasions and reasons for making something for the men in our lives. For this challenge create something which you feel has a more masculine look."

As always, the winner will earn a chance to be a Guest Designer at a future date at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. There are also Top 3 Badges for three additional outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team. Please see the blog for details.

The 3D embossed (Tim Holtz Foundry) corroded/eroded metal background was the jumping off point for my snarky greeting card. But you'll have to wait until this coming Saturday to see how I made it when I'll have a step by step as part of our Saturday Showcase feature at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog.

I did some background stamping using the Glitch 1 set and Black Soot archival ink. Of course, I couldn't resist using one of my Paper Dolls as the subject. His jacket and slacks are embossed in Cracked Pistachio and Peeled Paint Embossing Glazes and stamped with the grid from the same Glitch one set, also in archival ink.

I pulled out my Steampunk Parts Bigz die and some cat food box panels to make some rusty parts. (These come between the layers of canned Fancy Feast in a big box, so untouched by the cat food. Sadly, Roger's still on a diet and has to eat low fat, expensive food that doesn't come in a case, so I'm using up my stash.) I'll be sharing my 'rust' recipe on Saturday, too, although there are some slight changes here. Here, I added a few dribbles of Rust alcohol ink and sprinkled them with Rust Embossing Glaze and allowed it to dry without heating. I did the same thing to the Idea-ology Hardware Heads, too.

The snarky quote is from Snarky Cats stamp set. While I love the cats, I bought this set for the quotes. The layer under the Foundry layer is white card with Typeset Collage paper adhered with Collage Medium Matte. I colored just the edges with Distress Crayons: Black Soot and Vintage Photo and Prima Patina Green Matte Wax. Thank you to Wendy Baysa (Dabble DoDay) for gifting me with the Typeset Collage Paper, among many other crafty goodies!

I tucked in a Type Chip and and ephemera from Ideaology Urban Layers colored to coordinate with Antique Linen and Antiqued Bronze crayon and Matte Wax. A portion of another Urban Layer is stamped with another of the Glitch 1 images and altered with Vintage Photo and Black Soot crayons, Rust and Cracked Pistachio Embossing Glazes and Matte Wax.

I hope you liked my slightly distracted manly card. If you get time, be sure to pop over to The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog this Saturday for our Saturday Showcase feature to see how I made this corroded/eroded metal background and rusty metal as well as a few other things. In the meantime, please drop the blog to see to see what my talented teammates have put together to inspire you for our  Oh Man! challenge. Then it's over to you; I can't wait to see what you will create for this challenge! Take care of yourselves. Big hugs!

Happy crafting!
Sara Emily

Snarky Fall Coffee Card

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/ Fall Coffee Card Tim Holtz Tea Time Steampunk Parts Abandoned Paper Stash 1

I've been seeing all the fabulous coffee cards for the Coffee Lovers Blog Hop, and since I AM a coffee lover, I felt I should play along with at least one card.

I used Tim Holtz Abandoned paper stash for the background, and a Tea Time Bigz die cut from kraft card. I colored it with Peeled Paint and Evergreen Bough oxides, and blended with Vintage Photo ink. The steam is from the Cauldron Bigz die; I cut it twice each from white card and a patterned paper scrap. Both are blended with Old Paper and Vintage Photo inks and layered.

I thought this gent from the Halloween Paper Dolls went perfectly with the Snarky Small Talk sticker.

The rusty hex bolts and washers are from the Steampunk Parts Bigz die, cut from Metallic Kraft Stock and painted with Black Soot paint and DecoArt Q-gold. To pick up on the metallic embellishment, I decided to mat the panel with black card and Metallic 2 Kraft Stock sanded and painted with the same colors.

Lastly a splattering of Carved Pumpkin to hint at my favorite coffee--Pumpkin Spice Latte. It seems I'm not alone in my choice of flavors. What's your favorite coffee drink?

The Loveliest Things

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/ Sea Life Mixed Media Tag 1

Hello and welcome! Simon Says Stamp's current challenge is Life On The Ocean Waves, and I couldn't help but play along. The Elegant 3D Texture Fade just screams ocean waves to me, so I used it to embosse an oxide background.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/ Sea Life Mixed Media Tag 2

After inking, embossing and inking again, I swiped the raised portions of the swirls randomly and heat embossed with Seth Apter's White Cloud Baked Velvet. I splashed with watery Faded Jeans oxide. Can you spot the fish tail? I stamped the fish from Tim Holtz Sealife on Plain Collage Paper using a light touch of Faded Jeans and Peeled Paint Distress Archival inks, and colored on the opposite side with Celestial Alcohol Pearls. I tore the edges of the image and adhered it to the background with collage medium. I also did the fish head on the opposite side, but I made a real mess out of it. It's covered with 'kelp' (cheesecloth dyed with Peeled Paint spray oxide and Walnut Stain oxide).

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/ Sea Life Mixed Media Tag 3

I love this propeller from the Steampunk Parts Bigz die. I gave it an old crusty tarnished and worn brass look with a variety of products. Look out Mr. Seahorse; you might be cruising for a flat top!

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/ Sea Life Mixed Media Tag 4

The seahorse is from the Sealife stamp set, too, inked with Ground Espresso archival and clear embossed over an old failed alcohol ink lift technique panel (before the miraculous Alcohol Lift ink).

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/ Sea Life Mixed Media Tag 5

And there's the Seashells Bigz die cut given a crusty look with a variety of products. You can see a tutorial I did with tips on making seashells HERE. Grit paste, art stones and Seth Apter's Deep Sand Baked Texture, a brass starfish from my stash, a Clippings Sticker and some Funky Floral die cuts finish it off.

I hope you're finding time to create among these busy summer days. I find my crafting time is rare, but this came together in no time. Thank you for stopping by! Hugs and Blessings! Sara Emily

'Sea' the World Etcetera Tag

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/07/sea-world-etcetera-tag.html 'Sea' the World' Mixed Media Etcetera Tag 1

Hello friends! Today marks the start of a new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog, formerly Frilly and Funkie. The name and blog design has changed but the bi-weekly challenges continue as usual.  Starting with the current theme, both the Frilly and the Funkie sides of the Design Team are joining forces to present one post for the challenge titled Water, Water, Everywhere. This theme was chosen by the talented Cec, and here is what she says:

Often when people go on vacation there is water involved – fishing, cruising, checking out the aquarium, enjoying water sports or playing in the sand at the beach. For this challenge I want you to create a vintage or shabby chic project that reminds you of one or more of these past times.

As always, the Design Team will choose their top four picks, and the winner will be invited to join us in a Guest DT spot at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog. The next three will receive Top 3 badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and follows the rules will be entered into the draw to have the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/07/sea-world-etcetera-tag.html 'Sea' the World' Mixed Media Etcetera 2

The inspiration for my panel came from these three seafaring ladies that were on top of the deck of Tim Holtz Found Relatives pack that was still sitting out on my desk. (Nancy, Betty and Barbara, all BFF's since high school.) "Use me!", they cried out in unison. I colored them with Distress Crayons and layered over Classic and Metallic Kraft Stock panels. I added a tiny price 'sticker' from Tim's Keepsakes Ephemera pack, distressed and inked with Ground Espresso.

Backing the photo is a Destination Thinlit die cut heat embossed with Fractured Ice embossing powder over brown Distress ink. This translucent powder does amazing things over colored inks and makes it so easy to add depth and dimension. I adhered the die cut over an oxide mop up panel from my stash and fussy cut around the edges.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/07/sea-world-etcetera-tag.html 'Sea' the World' Mixed Media Etcetera 4

I had another inky panel in my stash that worked perfectly as the background. It was a mop up from a combination of  (I believe) Pumice Stone, Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain Distress Oxide Sprays on Bristol board . I adhered the panel to a Mini Etcetera Tag with Distress Collage Medium Matte, trimmed and sanded the edges. I blended with Evergreen Bough Distress ink and added Metallic crayon randomly to the edges.

I just picked up a couple of vintage checkbooks at a really inexpensive estate sale this past weekend (these were free), and on flipping through the stubs, I came across this one that worked perfectly with my theme. This check was for $65 and it was for "Trip-Cost/Laundry". I used one of the  Ticket Booth Framelits to cut the rough edge where I tore it from the checkbook and aged it a bit more with Distress inks.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/07/sea-world-etcetera-tag.html 'Sea' the World' Mixed Media Etcetera 5

I embossed a strip of Classic Kraft Stock with Foundry 3D Texture Fade, sanded and inked with Rusty Hinge oxide and Ground Espresso ink.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/07/sea-world-etcetera-tag.html 'Sea' the World' Mixed Media Etcetera 6

I originally had plans to use my new to me Tim Holtz Sea Life  stamp set as the focus of my project, but Nancy, Barbara and Betty were calling to me. Yet I couldn't resist adding this sweet seahorse and seaweed from the set. I can just imagine looking out the port hole in your cruise cabin and seeing this bit of sea life. I used Classic and Metallic Kraft Stock and Steampunk Parts die to make the aged brass porthole.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/07/sea-world-etcetera-tag.html 'Sea' the World' Mixed Media Etcetera 7

Another piece of Keepsakes ephemera and a stamped and torn ticket back the Quote Chip. I used Tim Holtz Ticket Booth stamps and Framelits to make the ticket, which is colored with oxides and stamped with a combination of Distress Archival inks ( Faded Jeans and Ground Espresso) which adds depth and age. Using my Stamp Platform makes easy work of stamping using more than one color.

An Ideaology Swivel Clasp holds an altered Typed Token . I used a seahorse charm from my stash, but Linda sells a beautiful seahorse charm in the shop as well as a seaside charm set that comes with the sweetest  detailed seahorse along with 8 other antiqued bronze nautical charms. (They're on sale for just $3.59 for the set!)  I tied off my tag with a couple pieces of that gorgeous ribbon Linda ties up her thank you packages with along with Ideaology Jute String colored with Cracked Pistachio Distress Oxide spray.

That's all for me today, but there's plenty more wonderful watery inspiration over on the blog, where my Frilly and Funkie teammates will wow you with their creativity. Then it's over to you! I can't wait to see what you will make! Hugs and Blessings! Sara Emily
