So Delicate

Hello friends and visitors! It's time for a new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog and today Jenny is our host. She calls her challenge 'So Delicate':

"Although it's not always evident in my projects, I have a real passion for delicate laces, fragile flowers, fine stitching, intricate artwork and exquisite architecture. For this challenge create something delicate or a vintage/shabby chic project that features delicate things in it."

The Design Team will choose their four top picks and the overall winner will receive the $25 gift certificate to go on a spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. All four top picks will receive badges to display on their blogs in recognition of their outstanding contributions. Stop over to the blog to see all the details and the wonderful delicate inspiration shared by my teammates.

Being a gardener, I can think of nothing more delicate than the flowers and foliage I see in my garden, so I decided to make my Mom a card with a vintage flower garden theme. First, I will share a few close ups and then show the steps I took to make this card.
.

My colors and overall theme were inspired by the beautiful rose on the ephemera and the delicate color of the seam binding ribbon. These were included in one of the sweet goodie bags Linda puts in her orders as a special thank you gift when you make a purchase from The Funkie Junkie Boutique. I have quite a stash of these goodie bags! I tucked in  a pair of Tim Holtz flowers brushed with Tattered Rose ink.

Here's how this card came together.

I started with two panels: one a Distress Heavystock white panel trimmed to fit a 5 x 7 card blank and the second a left over panel of a heavy card from my scraps--I think it may be bristol board. It's interesting to note how different papers react to inks, etc. I blended Tattered Rose ink through two different Tim Holtz Layering Stencils--Lattice and Blossoms. While the ink was still fresh, I heat embossed with Tattered Rose Embossing Glaze powder. (Sorry, I forgot to include the stencils in the photo.) I scuffed the embossing with steel wool to remove some of the shine before moving onto the next step.

Next, I inked a Tapestry stamp with a delicate pattern with Bundled Sage and Brushed Corduroy and spritzed the stamp with water before randomly stamping on the panels. Even though the shine is removed from the embossing, it resists the ink.

I blended each of the panels with Bundled Sage and Antique Linen inks. I splashed with plain water then watered down Cracked Pistachio Oxide Spray, heat drying after each. I set these panels aside and worked on my embellishments. I would later cut one of the panels using Stacked Postage and mat the die cuts on card which I faux 'stitched' with a micron pen.

I die cut some old Distress papers and a scrap of inked paper using Tim Holtz Brushstroke Flowers #1 die set and assembled the flowers. I ended up not using the pink one shown on my card, but cut and assembled a second smaller flower out of more of the old Distress papers.

I die cut a few of the leaves from the Brushstroke Flowers set out of Distress paper, added a Remnant Rub to a metal tag from my stash and found some lace to use on my card. Each was rubbed with Patina Green Matte Wax. I ended up using a different lace on my card which was blended with Bundled Sage ink.

I matted the rose ephemera on black card, after blending the edges with Brushed Corduroy ink. I smooshed my Fossilized Amber ink pad on an acrylic block, spritzed it with water and applied it to one side of the panel to give more of an aged look.

Here's one more look at the completed card.  I know it's a  little busy, but I think it gives it the vintage style garden vibe I was going for.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Please be sure to visit the blog to see what my talented teammates made to inspire you, and then I hope you will take some time to play along in our So Delicate challenge. I can't wait to see what you will make! Crafty hugs! Sara Emily

A Stenciled Mum Card for Mom

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/08/a-stenciled-mum-card-for-mom.html #stampersanonymous Mixed Media Card 1

Hello and welcome! Today we start a new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique challenge blog, and this time super talented Jenny is hosting our challenge. She calls it Stencilmania, and here's the description...

Stencils are such versatile tools - you can add colour through them, add texture and patterns with them, draw with them, emboss with them, print with them and so much more. So for this challenge we want you to get creative with your stencils, adding as many layers as you dare to create a vintage or shabby chic project to share with us all.

As always, the winner will earn a chance to be a Guest Designer at a future date at The Funkie Junkie Boutique challenge blog, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. There are also Top 3 Badges for three additional outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team. Please see the blog for details.

I do have to say, that after many failed stencil techniques, I finally just played at what I know best--monoprinting with stencils-- and came up with a layered card for my Mom and a second simple card to have on hand for a birthday. I have another monoprint card here.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/08/a-stenciled-mum-card-for-mom.html #stampersanonymous Mixed Media Card 2

Obviously, I decided to use my stencils on my background, but you'll learn I used them on some of my layers as well. Let's get started...

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/08/a-stenciled-mum-card-for-mom.html #stampersanonymous Stencil Tutorial 1

I put down some subtle color with Distress sprays on a piece of mixed media paper; this is quite heavy paper from my stash and can take a lot of wet product. I spritzed my paper quite heavily with water and dipped it into puddles of oversprays left on my glass mat from a previous spraying, drying between layers of color. I'm not one to waste my product. Not a great background, but it's going to get covered up with inks and oxide.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/08/a-stenciled-mum-card-for-mom.html #stampersanonymous Stencil Tutorial 2

Next, I took one of the mini stencils from set 26 (Splash), and blended three inks in the same colors as the sprayed background. Distress blending brushes allow you to get the color exactly where you want it to go when using these intricate stencils. Use a different brush for each color family-greens, blues, reds, etc. (The photo above shows the completed stenciling after doing the two steps outlined below. I had to show it, because most of that wonderful monoprint technique got covered with ephemera in the end.)

You can see in the photo below, I sprayed the inky stencil with water and flipped it over onto the paper to make a monoprint. (The photo below is actually done on a second background (completed card pictured below), so the colors look different; I forgot to take a photo of this step when making this card.)

Then I blended more of the swirls with Wilted Violet Oxide to provide some depth.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/08/a-stenciled-mum-card-for-mom.html #stampersanonymous Stencil Tutorial 4

To give a vintage look, I blended with Frayed Burlap ink, and eventually edged with Ground Espresso ink. (I did this with all the pieces.)

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/08/a-stenciled-mum-card-for-mom.html #stampersanonymous Stencil Tutorial 5

I didn't stop there with my stencils. I swiped Distress Embossing Dabber over the Grime Stencil on a Field Notes Ephemera panel and embossed with Weathered Wood Embossing Glaze. I blended this piece with Frayed Burlap after embossing, so the powder didn't stick to the ink. I was surprised by the variation in color from the glaze. I'm sure this is because I allowed the powder to slide over the embossing liquid by tipping the panel. Instead, I should have done the finger tip dance before dumping as Tim suggests in his video.  Since I only had the one piece of ephemera, I embraced it.

I really liked the color of the butterfly from the Botanical Layers pack, but I didn't think he was large enough for my card. To give him more of a presence, I layered him over a die cut  hexagon from the Stacked Tile set. I colored the die cut with Bundled Sage and Peeled Paint oxides and Evergreen Bough ink. I even used another stencil (Ornate mini stencil set 25) monoprint in the inky layers. Although the print isn't clearly seen, it adds to the depth of color.

I chose the purple and lavender mums from the Botanical Layers pack because of the color (my Mom's favorite), but was thrilled to see how the petals echoed the pattern of the Splash stencil and, of course, the colors I chose for the background. (This was not planned.) A couple more pieces of ephemera, this time from the Keepsakes pack, and a panel of sanded Confections kraft stock finish off this simple card. I stamped the Tiny Text sentiment onto the tag ephemera in Archival. I made a stamping faux pas, but decided to embrace the imperfection and chalk it up to the vintage vibe.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/08/a-stenciled-mum-card-for-mom.html #stampersanonymous Mixed Media Card 4

Here is the other card I made while I had the sprays, inks and stencils out. I really love the look of monoprints, but it gets even better when you layer more stencils over top!

Vintage Rose Cards

Hello friends! My kiddos are celebrating their 22nd birthday this weekend, and I made this birthday card for my daughter and a second one using the same paint colors just for fun. I chose to use primarily paint, so I could play along with Simon Says Stamp where the prompt is to play with paint.

I used the Roses 3D Texture Fade by Tim Holtz and the following Distress paint colors: Broken China, Mustard Seed, Peeled Paint, Black Soot and Picket Fence.  I used a secret ingredient--hand sanitizer-- to make the paint more translucent and glaze-like, giving the backgrounds a more water color appearance and allowing stamping to show through.

The background on the Blue Rose card for my daughter is stamped with Peeled Paint Archival ink and the Botanical stamp from Botanical & Batik by Tim Holtz. I did this by inking the stamp and making the impression right onto the flat surface of the embossing folder on the side with the recessed image. Then I transferred the ink to the water color card when I ran it through my die cut machine.

The birthday sentiment (Tiny Text) is heat embossed with Speckled Egg Embossing Glaze over Broken China ink and edged in Princess Gold Embossing powder. This panel is layered over Metallic Kraft Stock.

For the other card, I started with a watercolor panel that I first coated randomly with gesso. It gives even an even more translucent quality to the paints. I colored the yellow gold roses first with Distress Crayons (Dried Marigold, Spun Sugar and Squeezed Lemonade) and gesso, before finger painting with Mustard Seed Distress paint. Foxing is done with Frayed Burlap ink. The panel is layered over old Coordinations card.

Everything else, including the background is done with the Distress Paint mainly using my finger, except splatters of black and white were done with paint and splatter brushes. All the raised areas are touched lightly with Prima's Opal Magic Wax in Vintage Silk. I left off the sentiment, so I could use this card for practically any occasion.

Here's another look at each complete card.

Thank you for stopping by today! Now I need to go make a card for my young man.  I'll leave you with this Bible verse which I think brings comfort and reassurance in these troubling times:

"And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To Him be the power for ever and ever. Amen." Peter 5:10-11

Christmas All Ready??

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/07/christmas-all-ready.html Rustic Christmas Card Tutorial #timholtz #yuletide #wreath&snowflake #lumberjack 1

Hello friends! It's time for a new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique and Cec is hosting "Christmas in July"!

"If you are like me, you are anxious for 2020 to be over and done with. To speed things up let's pretend Christmas is around the corner even though it is only July and get a start on creating shabby chic or vintage inspired cards. This challenge is all about cards so please save other Christmas creations for later."

I embraced this challenge as I'm tired of the heat of the summer and just thinking about Christmas cools me by 20 degrees. Like Cec, I'm also ready for the calendar to turn to a new year, hopefully a better one than 2020 is shaping up to be. But not before celebrating Christmas, so I also welcomed the challenge to get an early start on my handmade cards. Here are the steps I took to create my first Christmas card of the year. This was so fun and easy to make, I may just have to mass produce them. Let's get started...

Create the wood grain back panel by embossing card stock with Lumber 3D embossing folder. This folder is no longer available in the shop, so I've linked to Distress Woodgrain cardstock in the link list below. It will save you a couple steps. (wink, wink) Ink edges with Ground Espresso Archival ink, smudge with a damp finger and Walnut Stain crayon and then blend with Walnut Stain ink to accentuate the grain. Adhere panel to brown card blank.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/07/christmas-all-ready.html Rustic Christmas Card Tutorial #timholtz #yuletide #wreath&snowflake #lumberjack 2

Stamp plaid image from the Lumberjack set in Ground Espresso ink on water color paper using stamp platform. Clean the stamp while it remains in the platform and apply Distress Embossing dabber and repeat impression over first. Remove the inked panel from platform and heat emboss with Walnut Stain Embossing Glaze. When cool, spray with water and then Evergreen Bough Distress Spray Stain. Blend with more water and allow to dry.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/07/christmas-all-ready.html Rustic Christmas Card Tutorial #timholtz #yuletide #wreath&snowflake #lumberjack 3

After it's completely dry, remove shine from the glaze by buffing with steel wool. I added a bit more pressure with the steel wool than I usually do to get more of a distressed look to the panel. Blend edges with Walnut Stain ink.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/07/christmas-all-ready.html Rustic Christmas Card Tutorial #timholtz #yuletide #wreath&snowflake #lumberjack 4

To make the panel behind the deer, I inked the Holiday Type stamp (Tim Holtz Stripes & Holiday Type) with Ranger Resist ink (unused in my stash forever), making the impression on plain card. I sprayed the card with Antique Linen Spray stain and misted with water to blend, drying with my heat tool. Curiously, the ink seems to be attracted to, rather than resisted by the ink. Hmmm...I see possibilities! I cut the panel with one of the Stacked Archway Thinlits dies and cut a second archway from chipboard.  I edged both archways with Ground Espresso ink and adhered the stamped one to the chipboard die cut, offsetting slightly.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/07/christmas-all-ready.html Rustic Christmas Card Tutorial #timholtz #yuletide #wreath&snowflake #lumberjack 5

I  colored card scraps with Mowed Lawn and Evergreen Bough inks and sprayed with Tarnished Brass Distress Mica Spray. I cut two wreaths from the scraps using the Wreath &Snowflake Thinlits set. I cut a few more sections of the holly leaf portion and tucked these in between the two layers to make a fuller wreath. The berries and bow from the same set were cut from an inky red scrap from my stash. I used the Distress Embossing pen and Fired Brick Embossing Glaze to add some dimension and shine to the berries and set the bow aside. I assembled the wreath/berries and adhered everything with Distress Collage Medium Matte and then adhered the wreath to the ink resist panel.

I stamped the deer from the Yuletide set on the stamp platform, inking his antlers in Vintage Photo and the rest of his head with Ground Espresso Archival inks. I blended his antlers with Frayed Burlap and his face with Vintage Photo, both regular inks and used a white gel pen to add some highlights. Lastly I fussy cut him and adhered him and the bow on the wreath.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/07/christmas-all-ready.html Rustic Christmas Card Tutorial #timholtz #yuletide #wreath&snowflake #lumberjack 6

Using the Merry Christmas stencil from mini set 32, I blended Candied Apple ink through the word 'Merry' and Ground Espresso through 'Christmas' onto water color paper I had previously blended with Frayed Burlap ink. 'Merry' was then heat embossed with Fired Brick Embossing Glaze and 'Christmas' with Walnut Stain Embossing Glaze. Both were cut, edged in Walnut Stain and adhered to the card.

Cattywampus

Hello friends! Today starts a new challenge over at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog, and I'm hosting this one. I call it Cattywampus and here's the skinny...

'Cattywampus is a funny sounding southern slag term I hear a lot around the house. According to the On Line Slang Dictionary it has several meanings including "appearing off center, diagonal from, crooked or not level, appearing askew, tilted or lopsided". Taking inspiration from any one of these definitions, include something cattywampus in your vintage or shabby chic project. Be sure to tell us what that cattywampus thing is; we might miss it!'

As always, the winner will earn a chance to be a Guest Designer at a future date at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. There are also Top 3 Badges for three additional outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team. Please see the blog for details.

Can you guess what's cattywampus about my cat card? Well, I think it's pretty obvious the stacked postage frame is slightly crooked. It was actually an afterthought having found it sitting in a pile of castoffs that hadn't been discarded from my last playtime. I stamped and heat embossed it with the scribble from Grunged stamp set and white powder. I inked it with Distress oxide and ink and adhered it around a Gloss paper panel on which I had outlined bubbles with a ball point pen using the Bubble stencil.  I took a Q tip dipped in alcohol and traced over the lines, blending each of the bubbles. I'm sure it's not a mystery this was one of the ideas I tried on for size for our last Positively Pensive challenge.

The panel and frame are layered over a panel of metallic Kraft stock. I scored it with my score board and lightly sanded. It's edged with Chipped Sapphire ink. The score lines helped me to line up my frame and panel, but it turns out the card I cut the postage from was not square, so it also appears even more cattywampus relative to the scored lines.

I stamped portions of a snarky comment from the Snarky Cat set in archival ink within the bubbles. And I used another of the quotes from the same set on a scrap at the bottom for the cat to stand on. The cat looks like he might be slightly askew.

The cat is stamped using Distress Crayons and  Distress regular and Archival inks. I added little dots to his eyes to give him a different personality. I fussy cut, edged with Chipped Sapphire ink and popped him up with waste cardboard.

I tucked in some Wildflower Stems die cuts. The pink one is colored with crayons and ink and the green one is from my stash.  The Mirrored Stars are colored with white gesso and ink and then lightly touched with crayon, both Chipped Sapphire.

I hope you will take some time to pop over to the blog and check out all the amazing cattywampus projects my talented teammates made to tempt you to play along in our challenge. I can't wait to see what crazy things you will come up with! Happy crafting! Sara Emily

Slightly Distracted and Corroded

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/05/slightly-distracted-and-corroded.html Tim Holtz Masculine Mixed Media Card 1

Hello, friends! It's time for anew challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog, and this time around Jenny is hosting. She calls her challenge theme 'Oh Man!', and this is how she describes it:

"Fathers Day may be a way off yet but there are always other occasions and reasons for making something for the men in our lives. For this challenge create something which you feel has a more masculine look."

The 3D embossed (Tim Holtz Foundry) corroded/eroded metal background was the jumping off point for my snarky greeting card. But you'll have to wait until this coming Saturday to see how I made it when I'll have a step by step as part of our Saturday Showcase feature at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/05/slightly-distracted-and-corroded.html Tim Holtz Masculine Mixed Media Card 2

I did some background stamping using the Glitch 1 set and Black Soot archival ink. Of course, I couldn't resist using one of my Paper Dolls as the subject. His jacket and slacks are embossed in Cracked Pistachio and Peeled Paint Embossing Glazes and stamped with the grid from the same Glitch one set, also in archival ink.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2020/05/slightly-distracted-and-corroded.html Tim Holtz Masculine Mixed Media Card 3

I pulled out my Steampunk Parts Bigz die and some cat food box panels to make some rusty parts. (These come between the layers of canned Fancy Feast in a big box, so untouched by the cat food. Sadly, Roger's still on a diet and has to eat low fat, expensive food that doesn't come in a case, so I'm using up my stash.) I'll be sharing my 'rust' recipe on Saturday, too, although there are some slight changes here. Here, I added a few dribbles of Rust alcohol ink and sprinkled them with Rust Embossing Glaze and allowed it to dry without heating. I did the same thing to the Idea-ology Hardware Heads, too.

The snarky quote is from Snarky Cats stamp set. While I love the cats, I bought this set for the quotes. The layer under the Foundry layer is white card with Typeset Collage paper adhered with Collage Medium Matte. I colored just the edges with Distress Crayons: Black Soot and Vintage Photo and Prima Patina Green Matte Wax. Thank you to Wendy Baysa (Dabble DoDay) for gifting me with the Typeset Collage Paper, among many other crafty goodies!

I tucked in a Type Chip and and ephemera from Ideaology Urban Layers colored to coordinate with Antique Linen and Antiqued Bronze crayon and Matte Wax. A portion of another Urban Layer is stamped with another of the Glitch 1 images and altered with Vintage Photo and Black Soot crayons, Rust and Cracked Pistachio Embossing Glazes and Matte Wax.

I hope you liked my slightly distracted manly card. If you get time, be sure to pop over to The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog this Saturday for our Saturday Showcase feature to see how I made this corroded/eroded metal background and rusty metal as well as a few other things. In the meantime, please drop the blog to see to see what my talented teammates have put together to inspire you for our  Oh Man! challenge. Then it's over to you; I can't wait to see what you will create for this challenge! Take care of yourselves. Big hugs!

Happy crafting!
