Wintry Mixed Media Cards for Frilly and Funkie

Welcome friends! Today the Funky side of the Frilly and Funkie  Design Team share their inspiration for the first challenge of 2019, 'Inspired By'. This is what Cec, our lovely hostess, has to say about her challenge theme:

I don't have access to quality craft classes locally so I spend time online to learn new things. For this challenge I want you to create a vintage or shabby chic project inspired by or using a technique or tutorial that you have found online. You must provide a link to the site that is inspiring your creation and please do not make a direct copy of anything you found.

I needed a few quick cards-- a thank you card and a birthday card for my brother in law. When I spotted this Christmas card by Tami Bastiaans (Plays Well With Paper), I knew I had to try her mixed media background. Not wanting to make a direct copy, I chose a slightly different embossing folder and a different color palette. You can visit her website for the how-to.

I completely forgot to take any process shots, but the process is fairly straightforward. Both backgrounds were created the same using the old Tim Holtz Snow Flurries embossing folder to add texture to Distress Watercolor Cardstock and spreading (more sparingly than Tami did) with Opaque Crackle paste. When the paste dried, I dipped the panel in watery puddles of Distress Oxides--Weathered Wood, Frayed Burlap and Ice Spruce, heating after each color and finally blending with Tumbled Glass Distress ink. I edged the larger of the two panels (shown above) with Ground Espresso ink.

The smaller panel was layered on Classic Kraft Stock, die cut with Stitched Rectangles Thinlits and sanded.

I topped it with a Flurry #1 die cut, a Christmas Paper Doll, a Tiny Text Remnant Rub on a black scrap and bundled string for the little girl to stand on.

The snowflake was colored with Tumbled Glass Oxide ink and then heat embossed with Versamark ink pad and Emerald Creek Fractured Ice embossing powder. I love this translucent powder mixed with some grungy bits that adds a vintage touch while allowing the color beneath to shine through.

For the larger, masculine card, I backed the panel with black sandable card stock layered over Christmas Paper Stash.

I used another Paper Doll in the adult male version, and an Ice Flake cut from Distress WoodGrain card stock and black card.

The wood grain Ice Flake was dipped in Weathered Wood and Tumbled Glass oxide puddles and blended with Frayed Burlap ink. Another string and a Small Talk Occasions sticker ground the man in this wintry scene.

That's all for me! I hope you're inspired to play along in this “Inspired By” challenge. To earn the chance to be our Guest Designer on the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog, simply create and link a vintage or shabby chic project following the theme and guidelines.

The Design Team will pick four favorites: our top favorite earns a Guest Designer spot and three other favorites will receive badges to display proudly on their personal blog.  Everyone who enters and follows the guidelines will be eligible to win a $25 shopping spree at the Funkie Junkie Boutique.  You have until 11:55PM on Tuesday, January 16th to link your project up on the Frilly and Funkie Blog. I can't wait to see what YOU are Inspired By!

Thank you for your visit!
Hugs and Blessings!
