      Has to be someone that was cold enough to wake such images and feelings in the writer. But who at the same is able to show he cares enough so as to have the sultan's mind set on him. If this beloved was only cruel, there'd have no reason why Mehmed would waste his time on him. It smells of a pain/pleasure feedback kind of relationship. And I thought these things started only after the Industrial Revolution lol

      But you know that sirens bewitch sailors with their seducing music /voices, and they shipwreck, right? I think that the meaning is quite clear -- someone is enchanting away Mehmed's beloved.
      
      And, if I will trust Google Translator, the story is quite clear: Mehmed is not certain about his beloved's sentiment, because the heart is a foreign country, as the Portuguese folklore teaches, and there is an opponent around. Mehmed writes:
      
      "it is difficult to approach the door to the beloved"/"to go to the sea, which is frightening in size and depth, is difficult".
      
      And then again: beloved has a pretender who is hawking around (there's a ghazal in which the hawk image is applied to convey the same idea -- there is a fox around the henhouse lol)
      
      So he is doubtful of the sentiment of his beloved, because he is in love, and the beloved is just --- too cold.

      Well, the sea is an unfathomless element, and I compare this to life itself, and the otherness specifically --- the one he loves, and whom he can't reach out, because, as I said, you can never grasp the whole of the person that you love, because part of it will never be clear enough, will always be hidden, very well hidden I'm afraid. For someone like Fatih that must have been a millstone around the neck, not being able to grasp the whole of the person he loved.

      That's really interesting because Turkish folklore and Eastern poetry says nothing about sirens. So how did Mehmed know about them? Maybe he knew this while reading Greek literature.

      It's curious that here Mehmed also says about the sea. The sea is a place where the pearl of his love is hidden.

The rival, I think, is the 'siren' luring the beloved off the path.
      And the harem thing may be a metaphor of the problems a lord has to go through because of the "household proper order". Or, maybe, if the beloved is a male, someone from the harem has been using "witchcraft" with him... I am still to pick my poison :))

Because, in the deep sea he is afraid of (the sea and abyss is a metaphor of love, the unknown land of someone else's being), there will always be "sirens" to seduce and deviate. The rival, I think, is the 'siren' luring his beloved off the path.
      And the harem thing may be a metaphor of the problems a lord has to go through because of the "household proper order".
