Por aqui as plantas crescem e as crianças também. O Pedro já agarra objectos, estuda-os com interesse e começa a pôr tudo na boca. Ontem fiz-lhe um tag blanket: para a semana mostro-vos o passo-a-passo. O Rodrigo ficou felicíssimo por poder estar no jardim no único dia em que não choveu — estendeu as mantas e regou as plantas. Fiz uns bolinhos com a receita do bolo de laranja do meu livro.Vendi conjuntos de retalhos para os quatro cantos do mundo (ainda há 5 disponíveis aqui). O blog fez 8 anos. E depois de amanhã fará 2 anos que nos fomos embora de Inglaterra.

Around here plants grow and so do our children. Pedro is grabbing objects, studying them and starting to put them in his mouth. Yesterday I sewed one of those tag blankets for him: next week I'll show you how I made it. Rodrigo was so happy to be out in the garden on the one day it didn't rain... he played with his quilts and watered the plants. I made little cakes with one of the recipes from my book. My scrap packs were bought from people all over the world (there are still 5 available here). The blog turned 8 years old. And on the day after tomorrow it will be 2 years since we've left England.

Época de Jardinagem :: Gardening Season

Começou a época de jardinagem cá em casa. No ano passado comprei pés de plantas em vez de fazer sementeiras mas, neste ano, a minha abordagem é mista: tenho saudades de assistir ao processo completo, por isso semeio umas e compro outras. E tenho ainda o bónus daquelas que nascem espontaneamente — no sítio onde há um ano plantei quatro alfaces, agora apareceram nove!

Growing season has started around here. Last year I took the safe (lazy?) route when I decided to buy plants instead of sowing seeds but this year I'm taking a hybrid approach to gardening. I miss watching the whole process so I'm sowing some things and buying others. And there's also the bonus of self-seeded plants — last year I planted four lettuces and this year I've got nine free ones!

Flores de Novembro :: November Flowers

Nunca na minha vida tinha assistido a um Novembro tão florido! Eis alguns dos arranjos que fiz ao longo do mês com as flores do nosso jardim. O que nos trará Dezembro?

Never before had I experienced such a flowery November! Here are some of the arrangements I made during this month with flowers from our garden. I wonder what December will bring us...

Plantar :: Planting Time

Este ano decidi comprar as plantas em vez de semear tudo. Tomei uma espécie de atalho jardineiro, se virmos bem. Escolhi tomates, coentros, manjericão, pimentos, malaguetas, espinafres e alfaces (já temos salsa, menta, alecrim, louro, funcho e cebolinho). O Rodrigo, como bom macaquinho de imitação que é, participou activamente na tarefa de plantar tudo no jardim. Nem imaginam como gosto de o ver assim!

This year I've decided to buy plants instead of sowing them. I took a gardening shortcut, that's how I see it. I picked tomatoes, coriander, basil, sweet peppers, chili peppers, spinach and lettuce (we've already got parsley, mint, rosemary, bay, laurel, fennel and chives). Rodrigo, who's great at copying us, took an active part in planting everything in the garden. I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching him like this!

Jardim Primaveril :: Spring Garden

Depois de um Inverno sem o Natal para nos distrair, e dois meses passados em Portugal, cheguei a casa e encontrei um jardim que parece ter explodido.

Este jardim faz-me feliz. É uma salganhada de cores e cheiros, sem dúvida, e há partes que terão de ser repensadas. Mas é tão vibrante. E as flores... tantas flores! Algumas que se transformarão em frutos, outras que simplesmente cheiram bem e muitas ideais para cortar e trazer para dentro de casa. 

Hei-de partilhar convosco os arranjos que tenho feito. E os vegetais que plantámos neste fim-de-semana. Mas hoje mostro-vos apenas flores. E um rapazinho que gosta muito de ar livre.

After a winter with no Christmas to distract us and two months away in Portugal, I came home and found out that the garden has exploded.

This garden makes me happy. It's a mess of colour and smell, no doubt, and there are some corners that are in need of some landscaping. But it's just so vibrant. And the flowers... so many flowers! Some  will turn into fruits, other simply smell nice and many of them make ideal cutting material.

Soon I'll show you the arrangements I've been making. And the veggies we've planted this weekend. But today it's all about flowers. And a little boy who loves the fresh air.

Lisboa

Estivemos em Lisboa durante uns dias. Não estava demasiado calor e os jaracandás estavam em flor. Foi óptimo!

We went to Lisbon for a short stay. It wasn't too hot and the jacaranda trees were in bloom. It was great!

Flores de Maio :: May Flowers

Dois arranjos com flores apanhadas no jardim na semana passada:

- o primeiro com flores cultivadas: anémonas coronárias, orelhas-de-elefante (bergenia) e viburnum opulus ainda verde;

-o segundo com flores silvestres: bluebells, red campion, miosótis e canabrás.

Two arrangements made with flowers I picked in our garden last week:

- the first using cultivars: poppy anemone (anemone coronaria), elephant's ear (bergenia) and viburnum opulus still green;

- the second using wildflowers: bluebells, red campion, forget-me-not and Queen Anne's lace.

Flores em Latas :: Flowers in Tins

A inspiração está em todo o lado, até numa simples (e aborrecida) ida ao supermercado. Quando vi estas latas de sardinhas em molho de tomate imaginei-as logo cheias de flores... não resisti a comprá-las e, mal cheguei a casa, enchia-as com anémonas, viburnum opulus e bluebells — tudo do nosso jardim!

Inspiration is everywhere, even on a simple (and boring) trip to the supermarket. When I saw these tins of pilchards in tomato sauce I immediately pictured them with flowers... I could not resist buying them and, as soon as I got home, I filled them with anemones, viburnum opulus and bluebells... all from the garden!

Flores de Maio :: May Flowers

O  nosso jardim está a rebentar de flores. Muitas ervas daninhas, muitas flores silvestres (onde traçar a fronteira entre o que é daninho e e o que é silvestre?) e muitas flores cultivadas (algumas semeadas por mim, mas a maior parte herdada de donos anteriores). Ao fim da tarde fui num instante lá fora, de cesto e tesoura na mão, e apanhei uma mão cheia delas para fazer um arranjo para a sala. A luz estava dourada (os fins de tarde no campo são mesmo muito bonitos), o ar estava frio e só se ouviam pássaros, abelhas e o vento por entre as folhas. O jardim cheirava a flores e o tempo parou durante alguns minutos. Amanhã apanho mais.

Our garden is bursting with flowers. We've got plenty of weeds, plenty of wildflowers (where do you trace the line between a weed and a wildflower?) and plenty of cultivars (some have been grown by me but the most of them come from previous owners). I went outside just before sunset, basket and scissors in hand, and picked a bunch to make an arrangement for our sitting room. The light was golden (late afternoons in the countryside are stunning), the air was cold and all you could hear was birds, bees and the wind blowing through the leaves. The garden smelt like flowers and time stood still for a few minutes. Tomorrow I'll definitely pick some more flowers.
