Amabilidade :: Kindness

Hoje tinha uma grande surpresa à minha espera nos correios. Apesar de não nos conhecermos, a Dora teve a amabilidade de me enviar uma oferta generosíssima de botões e outros artigos de uma retrosaria que fechou e cujo espólio ela adquiriu em parte. Fiquei de boca aberta com a variedade e quantidade de botões que agora estão nas minhas mãos. Muito obrigada, Dora!

Today a great surprise was waiting for me at the post office. Although we've never met, Dora was kind enough to send me a most generous parcel filled with buttons and other goods from a haberdashery that has closed recently (she managed to buy a part of their stock). I was flabbergasted by the variety and quantity of buttons that are now on my hands. Thank you so much, Dora!

Presentes :: Gifts

Presentes feitos à mão são das melhores coisas do mundo e, sempre que recebo algum, fico a pensar se terei conseguido exprimir bem a minha gratidão. Mas presentes inesperados de leitoras deste blog... nem tenho palavras para explicar o quanto me tocam.

Handmade presents are one of the best things in the world and whenever I'm lucky to receive one, I worry if I'm able to show how grateful I am for them. But unexpected gifts from readers... well, I can't really express how much they mean to me.

Há uns meses recebi estas pegas feitas pela Cristina. Como podem imaginar, não poderiam ficar melhor na minha cozinha. Confesso que não as consigo usar... estão em exposição!

Some months ago I received these potholders made by Cristina. As you can well imagine, they couldn't look any better in my kitchen. I confess I haven't got the heart to actually use them... they are in display!

Depois foi a vez desta caixa feita pela Cláudia. Reconhecem as flores? A Cláudia comprou esta écharpe e, ao preparar a encomenda, atei o embrulho com uma tira do mesmo tecido. Pois bem, a Cláudia aproveitou esse bocadinho de tecido para decorar a caixa!

Then I got this box made by Cláudia. Do you recognise these flowers? Cláudia bought this scarf and I tied the packet with a strip of the same fabric. Well, she made use of that small piece of fabric to decorate the box!

E há uns dias chegou-me esta almofada de alfazema inteiramente executada pela Sandra. Já conheço os bordados da Sandra há uns anos e, para mim que adoro bordados monocromáticos, são dos mais bonitos que tenho visto até agora. E o cheiro da alfazema portuguesa não se compara ao cheiro da alfazema do meu jardim inglês: é intenso, doce e repleto de memórias.

Finally, a few days ago this lavender sachet arrived in the post. It was made by Sandra - I've admired her embroidery skills for years and since I love monochromatic schemes, I think her pieces are some of the most beautiful I've seen so far. And let me tell you about the scent of Portuguese lavender, so different from the scent of the lavender I grow in my English garden: it's strong, sweet and filled with memories.

Inesperado / Unexpected

Apesar de, aparentemente, a internet se tratar de um mundo impalpável e virtual, por vezes revela-se espantosamente próxima e real. Há uns dias, recebi este coração feito pela Elisabeth. A Elisabeth faz e oferece corações de feltro a quem a inspira. Muito obrigada, Elisabeth!

Although the internet apparently is an untouchable, virtual world, sometimes it reveals itself to be amazingly real and close to you. Some days ago I received this lovely heart made by Elisabeth. She makes and gives felt hearts to those who inspire her. Thank you so much Elisabeth! I'm flattered!

Comprar feito à mão - II / Buying handmade - II

Já andava a namorar os bolos da Sílvia há uns tempos. Quando os vi pela primeira vez pensei imediatamente: a quem posso oferecer isto? Não tenho irmãs, filhas, primas, sobrinhas ou amigas em idade de brincar com bonecas, por isso pus a ideia de parte. Mas, de vez em quando, ia espreitar a loja... até que a semana passada comprei um bolo para mim. Qual é o mal de comprar um objecto pelo puro prazer de olhar para ele?

Sílvia's cakes have been on my mind for some time. When I first saw them, I immediatly thought: whom can I give this to? I have no sisters, daughters, cousins, nieces or friends who still play with dolls so it was difficult for me to find a reason to buy them. But once and again I paid a little visit to her shop... and last week I bought myself a cake. What's wrong with buying something only for the pleasure of looking at it?

E hoje recebi um bolo muito apetitoso, numa embalagem muito gira e cor-de-rosa, que eu abri cheia de vontade de voltar a ser criança e brincar com bonecas e serviços de chá e tachos e panelas (estes últimos eram os meus brinquedos preferidos... quem diria que um dia mais tarde iria detestar cozinhar?). O bolo não é o máximo?

And today I received a yummy cake inside a very cute and very pink box, that I opened wishing I could become a child again and play with dolls, tea sets, pots and pans (these last items were my favourite toys... who would have thought later on I would hate cooking?). Isn't the cake wonderful?

Já está arrumado na prateleira dos botões, mesmo por cima da máquina de costura, onde o poderei ver todos os dias.

Comprar feito à mão / Buying handmade

A vivência do "feito à mão" não passa apenas por fazer e vender... passa também por comprar. Hoje o carteiro trouxe-me o cachecol mais giro de sempre, feito pela Alice. Há mais aqui.

Lovely mail

Como é bom chegar a casa com a luz de fim de tarde, encontrar envelopes coloridos dentro da caixa do correio e dar de caras com livros encostados à porta! :) Amanhã mostro mais imagens!

It feels so good to come home with the afternoon sun still shining, to find colourful envelopes inside the mail box and to have books waiting against the front door! :) Tomorrow I'll show some more pictures!

Lucky me!

Estou de volta! Que viagem fabulosa: deixou-me de barriga cheia! Nos próximos dias vou aqui mostrar o que a minha loucura consumista de tecidos e afins me fez trazer.

Entretanto, tinha em casa, à minha espera, um envelope cheio de presentes, vindos também dos EUA. Foram-me enviados pela generosa JC handmade, a propósito de um sorteio que ganhei há um mês nesse blog.

I'm back! What a fabulous trip! In the next days I'll show here what I've bought in the USA (a very dangerous country if you happen to be a fabric/sewing supplies mad consumer!).

When I got home I had this wonderful goodies package from the USA waiting for me! It was sent by the generous JC handmade as a prize for having won a small contest in her blog.

Comprar tecidos on-line / Buying fabrics on-line

Para mim, no que toca à compra de tecidos on-line, houve um antes e um depois deste post da Manda. Antes de o ler, não me atrevia a mandar vir tecidos dos EUA, por não conhecer ninguém que já o tivesse feito e por ter ouvido muitas histórias sobre taxas alfandegárias astronómicas. Depois, tornou-se uma tentação irresistível! Comecei por me cingir aos saldos e experimentei o Sew, Mama, Sew!, depois de ter ganho um sorteio no blog, o E-Quilter e o Z&S fabrics.

As experiências têm-se revelado muito positivas, e pequenos pormenores tornam as compras ainda mais apelativas. O Sew, Mama, Sew escreveu-me um bilhetinho à mão e incluiu dois botões, o E-Quilter tem um motor de busca excelente, que me permitiu encontrar o tecido perfeito para um projecto ao qual me tenho dedicado nas últimas semanas (e que espero poder revelar aqui o quanto antes) e o Z&S fabrics, para além de envolver os tecidos num laço amoroso, pratica preços mais baixos do que os outros sites.

Hoje recebi um envelope do Z&S. Estava particularmente ansiosa que esta última encomenda que fiz chegasse, porque desta vez mandei vir dois charm packs. Para quem não sabe o que são charm packs, trata-se de um conjunto de amostras de todos os padrões de uma determinada colecção. Comprei Aunt Grace 15th Anniversary Collection (Marcus Brothers) e Peas & Carrots (Moda).

For me, when it comes to buying fabric on-line, there is before and after this particular post by Manda. Before I read it I wouldn’t dare to order fabrics from the US because I didn’t know anybody who had done it and I had heard too many stories about huge custom taxes. After reading it, it became an irresistible temptation! I started buying fabrics that were on sale and I have already bought from Sew, Mama, Sew! (after winning a contest on their blog), E-Quilter and Z&S fabrics.

I’m very pleased with this whole new experience and there are small details than make everything even nicer. Sew, Mama, Sew! included a small handwritten card and two buttons, E-Quilter has a great search engine, leading me to the perfect fabric for a project I’m working on (which I hope to show here in no time) and Z&S fabrics tie a lovely ribbon to the fabrics you order and is cheaper than the others.

Today I got a package from Z&S. This time I ordered fabric AND charm packs: Aunt Grace 15th Anniversary Collection (Marcus Brothers) e Peas & Carrots (Moda).

Ganhei!! Participei no sorteio "Free Pattern Friday" do Sew, Mama, Sew! e pude escolher um pattern (molde?) da Amy Butler . Escolhi a frenchy bag. É o meu primeiro pattern; estou ansiosa por dar-lhe uso!!

I won!! I entered the "Free Pattern Friday" competition in Sew, Mama, Sew! and I could choose one of Amy Butler's patterns. I chose the frenchy bag. It's my 1st pattern; can't wait to put it to use!!

Correio generoso / Generous mail

Há algum tempo participei num desafio no Chocolate à chuva e fui uma das duas vencedoras de uma das famosas capas para livros da Tânia Ho!! Ontem o correio trouxe-me não só este prémio (ainda é mais gira ao vivo!), mas também dois bocados de chita.

Some time ago I entered a competition in Chocolate à chuva and I happened to be one of the two lucky winners of a bookcover (you all know Tânia Ho's famous bookcovers, don't you?).
