Naiad

Naiad were a five-piece metalcore band from Kyoto, Japan that were around from 2001 to 2006. The band's output was minimal, with just a demo and their 2003 EP Hardcore Emotion being their most definitive release, which is a severely underrated genre-bending masterpiece, with elements of ambient post-rock, intense, searing vocals and off-kilter metallic riffs a la Shai Hulud or 7 Angels 7 Plagues, and melodic, melancholic emo in the vein of Grade or Christie Front Drive, all packed into an incredible 22-minute runtime. This is an incredible release that I wish I had found sooner, so implore you to give it a listen as well for its sheer uniqueness and visceral impact. Members of this band are also now active in .islea. if you want to check them out too. Enjoy.

Parannoul

Parannoul (파란노을) is a post-rock/shoegaze/emo project from Seoul, South Korea. Any other information about them is unknown as they operate completely anonymously, though it does seem to be just one person. They first began releasing music online in 2017 using the moniker laststar, which became Parannoul in 2020. He's also used the name  Mydreamfever. Parannoul is a name I've seen pop up for the last few years now, and admittedly never took the time to delve into. Even when After The Magic a Topshelf release garnering positive acclaim, I still didn't get around to listening to it. I fully admit to being ashamed of myself, because it took me up until a few weeks ago to experience the lush and gorgeous experience this album has to offer.

It's artwork really encapsulates the feelings this record evokes, with an amplified brightness and burst of colour from the sun's reflection on freshly fallen snow. It's captures that shimmer through 10 tracks of beautiful guitar work that sounds absolutely massive on cuts like "Arrival" and "Imagination" or contemplative like "We Shine At Night" or "After The Magic". It's paired with a varied instrumental palette, which extends to strings and electronics. Vocally, the melodies are absolutely mesmering, particularly "We Shine At Night". Much like Sigur Rós, there's an emotional conveyance despite not being able to understand the actual words, and the vocals work in tandem with the instrumentals to create one seamless work. I'm sure this isn't doing it any justice, it's worth just checking out for yourself, and I look forward to going through his back catalogue to close out this year. Enjoy.

Deathcrash

deathcrash are a four-piece slowcore/post-rock band from London, England that formed in 2018. They debuted with a series of self-recordings featuring relatively, reverb-heavy lo-fi arpeggios and meandering, drawl-like vocals. Along with the occasional distorted, dissonant climaxes, you get a sound that sits at the intersection between Codeine, Mogwai, and Slint. They quickly progressed and refined that foundational sound over an EP and debut LP, which saw them craft these sprawling songs with cleaner production. They also come more into their own sonically, moving away from the obvious influence that permeated their earliest material.

Earlier this year, their sophomore album Less was released. This is a much more subdued, almost sparse affair. There's a tinge of midwest emo influence, along with these whisper-thin, quivering vocals. This is a somber, reflective and melancholic listen, with each note seeming to ring out and linger. The build-ups are layered but still sound spacious, with some potent highs being hit, particularly on "Empty Heavy" and "Dead, Crashed", which incorporate these layered, almost screamed vocals. It's a stark contrast to the record's predominantly slow pace, which makes it sound that much more immense. Anyway, this is one of the year's finest albums in my opinion, so if it sounds like it's up your alley, do yourself a favour and give it a listen if you haven't already. Enjoy!

Barrow

Barrow were a four-piece post-hardcore/screamo/post-rock band from Greensboro, North Carolina that formed in 2009 and ended in 2015, with a final reunion show taking place in 2017. They released two full-lengths, a split, and demo in that time. This band's sound is pretty hard to pin down, as it was incredibly dynamic, layered, and above all, cathartic. As a rudimentary description, they blended the heavy, rhythmtic lurching of post-hardcore acts with the chaosa and impassioned vocals of screamo, all between intermittent breaks of lush, reverb and delay-heavy guitars and melodic singing borrowed from post-rock. It's a sound that could appeal to a wide spectrum of fans of bands as varied as Apart, Caravels, or Moving Mountains. Barrow also made incredible use of their two vocalists, who played off and with each other so naturally, making everything sung or screamed absolutely magnified. This band was incredible, and worth finally getting around to share on here. If you're new to this band, my suggested starting point would be Being Without. Members now play in Rotting In Dirt, who are absolutely worth checking out too. Enjoy.

Fall Of Efrafa

Fall Of Efrafa were a five-piece post-metal/crust punk band from Brighton, England that were active from 2005 to 2009. In that time, they released a trilogy of albums all based around Richard Adam's 1972 novel Watership Down. Thus, not only are these concept albums, but this is a concept band. They use the novel's concepts and mythos to explore the cyclical rise and relationship of theocracy, dictatorship, and oppression in humanity, to give you a very basic overview of the band's themes. Lyrically, they aren't directly narrative and only use the novel as a point of reference, so it's not necessary to be familiar with, but it does enhance your experience. This is especially true in the case of the Lapine words, which is a language invented by the author and used by the rabbits in the book. There's an incredible animated film from 1978 based on the novel that may or may not be available in full on YouTube, which is worth your time to watch if you haven't read or don't plan or reading the novel.

The primary trilogy consists of three albums: Owsla, Elil, and Inlé were released over a four-year period and compiled in their entirety as The Warren Of Snares. Sonically, this band is very hard to pin down, but I'll give you a quick rundown of each entry. Owsla is the most bombastic and crust-oriented, with heavy use of d-beat and harsh, guttural vocals. Elil is cinematic and tension-building, with extensive instrumental interludes taking influence from post-rock. They conjure up a dismal atmosphere reminiscent of the apocalyptic landscapes of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Inlé takes influence from sludge and doom metal whilst still being melodic and forlorn, with the vocals being their most cathartic. Though they all do this, this album in particular blends the heavier moments with skeletal, atmospheric passages. It makes for a fantastic closer to this trilogy, only to reveal in its final seconds that it (spoiler) links back to the start of Owsla, repeating the endless cycle.

This band is incredible and one I've wanted to share for a long time, so I'm super happy they're finally making it on here. I highly recommend checking this band out, they present a plethora of sound that makes this body of work an epic, in the truest sense of the word. Enjoy.

Verse En Coma

Verse En Coma were a five-piece indie/emo/post-rock band from Falls Church, Virginia that were active around 2008. This project included members of City Of Caterpillar, Malady, and pg.99, which is a pretty good reference point in describing this band's sound, especially the former two. The dark, twisting melodies and cleanly sung vocals of Malady mesh with the expansive, effects-laden sound of City Of Caterpillar, with tremolo-picked guitars and whirling reverb. This results in the haunting Rialto, their sole recorded project. Like many of its members other works, this was released by Robotic Empire. Definitely check this out if you're familiar with the aforementioned bands, or if the phrase "clean screamo" sounds remotely appealing. Enjoy.

Holy Fawn

Holy Fawn are a four-piece post-rock/shoegaze band from Phoenix, Arizona that began in 2015. Since then, they've released two full-lengths and a few EP's/singles. Sonically, they play a dark and expansive take on post-rock that's simultaneously foreboding and ethereal, with shimmering tremolos and hard-hitting riffs. They reach immaculately heavy crescendos with walls of distortion and reverb, while the driving rhythm section give them a real energy and urgency, with soft vocals splashed against the background of the noise. Fans of bands including Slow Crush, Greet Death, Nothing, Deafheaven or Cloakroom should absolutely give this a listen if you haven't already. Enjoy.

Radura

Radura are a four-piece screamo/post-hardcore band from Milan, Italy that began in 2016. Since then, they've released two EP's, a split, and a full-length. I have been sorely missing out, because this band is absolutely incredible. Effetto Della Veduta D'Insieme makes for a gorgeous and cathartic listen, with the band crafting some of the most serene and ethereal music while still falling under the screamo umbrella. They take heavy influence from post-rock bands such as Explosions In The Sky, with the reverb and delay dialed up and the songs building into huge crescendos. They maintain a sense of energy with some pounding drums alongside vocals that are screamed, sung and spoken to convey a devastated longing, even without being able to understand a single word. Its nine tracks all offer something new, with its openers even incorporating a dreamy acoustic sound. Fans of bands including Daïtro, La Quiete, Raein, Envy, Suis La Lune, Pianos Become The Teeth, and Shizune would be remiss to not check this out. Enjoy.

caroline

caroline are an eight-piece post-rock band from London, England that began in 2017. This released their self-titled debut early this year on Rough Trade Records. This album was a long-time coming, with most songs from it having already been released in some capacity. With years of progression and evolution under each track's belt, the band finally presents them fully formed, working within the spaces of folk, midwest emo, post-rock and interpolated field recordings to construct something gorgeously layered and unique. Amidst reverberated guitars, percussion, strings, and ghostly vocals, the band has managed to strip each song back to its most minimal, actually making them more impactful in the process, feeling melancholic without brooding. Highly recommended, enjoy.
