Yearning

Yearning are a four-piece screamo/emoviolence band from Montreal, Quebec that began in 2021. They put out their debut album earlier this year on No Funeral Records. MMXXII  (Roman numerals for 2022) consists of 7 tracks in 9 minutes, which is all the time this band needs to get you hooked. Without a doubt, this is one of the most impactful and earnest takes on the sound pioneered by bands such as Orchid or Louise Cyphre that I've heard in a while. It's harsh, chaotic, and completely despondent, with some scorching vocals and and ritualistic guitars that recall the greatest moments of their aforementioned precursors. This is a release that will stay on repeat for a long time, and I cannot wait to see what this band has coming in the future., Also, just FYI, there is a Finnish doom metal band with the same name, in case there's some confusion when looking them up. Enjoy.

Palatka

Palatka were a five-piece hardcore/emo violence band from Gainesville, Florida that were around from 1994 to 1999, and returned to play a reunion show in 2015. They played a very spastic and jittery form of hardcore that incorporated the full-throttle aggression of bands like In/Humanity with the rhythmic nuances of a band like Heroin. Palatka also featured two vocalists.

They were relatively prolific for a band in their corner of the musicsphere, releasing multiple splits, being featured on many, many compilations, and putting out a full-length on No Idea Records. They also toured in Europe, which is a seemingly rare thing for bands like this around then. Despite putting out some incredible work, they are incredibly underrated, so definitely check them out. Below is their full-length and their most notable split, along with a discography released in 2002 that I unfortunately don't have much info or artwork for. If you know anything about it, please fill me in! Enjoy.

Guyver-One

Guyver-One were a hardcore/screamo band from San Diego, California that lasted for a very short time, possibly only between 1996 and 1997. They released a one 7" and one 12" during this period. Their sole EP is incredibly raw and chaotic, and pre-dates the sound that bands like pg.99 and Orchid would champion in just a few years to come. Their LP is slightly more experimental, with some mellowed-out interludes in the mix. This band is definitely underrated, and one of many phenomenal offerings San Diego had in the decade's underground. In 2008, the band released their full discography on Bandcamp (now taken down), which includes both formal releases, as well as alternate versions of some songs and a compilation-only track. Enjoy.

.Gif From God

.Gif From God are a six-piece hardcore/emo violence band from Richmond, Virginia that formed in 2015 (presumably) by former members of Caust. Without a doubt this is some of the most ear-shattering music I've heard in a long time. It's a progressive, assaultive blend of hardcore, metalcore, screamo, and grindcore that's heavy, noisy, discordant, and has more screaming vocal layers than a schizophrenic. Even when the band pulls back to allow for some "melodic" bridges, they never release the tension. Fans of bands like Love Lost But Not Forgotten, Majority Rule, The Number Twelve Looks Like You will undoubtedly dig these unhinged, violent spasms. I cannot recommend this band enough, this shit has me floored. You can grab their stuff over at Zegema Beach Records, if you want to show some support for this incredible band and a fantastic label. Enjoy.

Portrayal Of Guilt

Portrayal Of Guilt are a four-piece hardcore/screamo band from Austin, Texas that formed in a year I am unaware of, thought presume it was quite recent. Earlier this year, they put out their debut EP with the help of Deathwish, which is an absolute must-listen. They blend the dark, aggressive sensibilities of blackened hardcore with the chaotic catharsis of bands like pg.99. These three tracks are incredible, and Portrayal Of Guilt are definitely a band to look out for, because I'm sure they're going to be making some waves. They're also on tour now, so check their dates to see if they're passing thru yr hood. I can't recommend this enough. Enjoy.

I'm happy to announce the premiere of this new 7" from Virginia's Wristmeetrazor. This band got their start earlier this year with the release of a fantastic demo, and are now back with this new 7". This new Wristmeetrazor EP is a fantastic addition, containing 4 tracks of screamo/emo violence influenced by the likes of Neil Perry, Hassan I Sabbah, Raein, and Mihai Edrisch. The second 7", ...but the sky is empty, is slated for release later this year, along with a physical pressing. They're also playing a couple shows at the end of this month, so if you're in the area, I'd suggest checking them out. Highly, highly recommended. Enjoy!

In/Humanity

In/Humanity were a four-piece hardcore/screamo band from Columbia, South Carolina, that formed in 1992 and broke up in 1998. What this band is most renowned for is coining the term/genre of "emo violence". Essentially, it combines the emotional, melodic outbursts of emo/screamo with the intense, fast-paced aggressiveness of hardcore/powerviolence. The vocals are scorching, the instrumentals topple over each other, and their entire discography consists of nothing but pure, unadulterated, intensity mixed in with a plethora of film samples and such. This is one sprawling hour of chaos that cannot be missed for fans of aggressive music that doesn't take itself too seriously. Enjoy.

In Loving Memory

"What a loss to spend that much time with someone, only to find out that she's a stranger". Just like the endless supply of Eternal Sunshine quotes, there is no shortage of bands to commemorate today. Though skramz is for lovers, there is no happy here. Exactly four years ago today, this little tradition began, where each Valentine's Day a band is posted to sadgasm to. It started with The Saddest Landscape, then it was iwrotehaikusaboutcannibalisminyouryearbook, then You And I, then Love Lost But Not Forgotten, and this year (as you probably already guessed), it's In Loving Memory. We started from the bottom, and have continued to sink lower into a pit of self-imposed loneliness, depression and despair.

In Loving Memory was a six-piece screamo band from Des Moines, Iowa that lasted from 1998 to 2001. Though I usually like to give more background to a band, anything that needs to be said about them has already been documented to perfection in this blog post on Iowa Hardcore. It provides a full, detailed account of the band's members, history, and also includes links to their discography. I'm just going to touch upon their sound. The band played a frantic and frenzied form of hardcore/screamo that was influenced by all this genre's legends, including Saetia and Jeromes Dream. They also shared a guitarist with The Spirit Of Versailles, another classic band. They also had two vocalists providing dual male/female vocals, which was a major factor in this cathartic chaos that they created. Their lyrics were personal, albeit brief snippets of poetry that leave the listener to fill in the blanks with their own reflections.

In Loving Memory's recorded output was very small, with only two splits and one full-length (titled As Years Pass And Feel Like Seconds) being put out, and one of those splits featured tracks also on the full-length. Those are available over at Iowa Hardcore, which is the blog link I provided earlier, so full credit where credit is due. What I have here is the proper release of their full discography, which was put out in 2012 by Init Records. These recordings have been remastered, so the quality's a lot better, and you can really hear the complete chaos this band had to offer. Keep this shit on repeat today, cry if you like, indulge in your lonely estate and just know by next year it won't get better. Happy V-Day. Enjoy.

Louise Cyphre

Louise Cyphre were a four-piece screamo band from Germany that were around from 1999 to 2007. Their name is probably familiar, since they are probably one of the best and most influential "skramz" bands ever. Fans of that chaotic, noisy emo-violence sound will basically worship this band, and for good reason. I don't have to say much else, really. If you like dark, spastic screamo, you'll love this shit. They released a discography LP which includes all they've done except their one track on the Emo Apocalypse comp (which was put out a year after their discog). I included the discography in addition to all their individual releases (except the demo, which is only on the discog). Members now play in Republic Of Dreams. Enjoy.

June Paik

June Paik are a five-piece screamo/emo violence band from Munchen, Germany that's been around since 2004. Since then, they've become one of the most notable screamo acts in the past decade, and for good reason. What June Paik does best is take the core sound of hardcore/screamo, with its dark and chaotic assault, and expand it with lengthier, more droning musical passages. As opposed to the 30 second bursts of most bands within this genre, an average June Paik song can easily be as long as 8 minutes, with most songs averaging about 4 or 5 minutes. Keep in mind, the song lengths are not for the sake of length, but to build these songs into catharsis masterpieces. Also, some of their releases are titled as 7", 10", and 12", since they're all just self-titled, which is an online music library's personal hell. Regardless, enjoy.
