Welcome Spring- 7 Innovative outdoor planters

image source Spring officially rolled in this past weekend! I'm always excited to see the grass turn green and the flowers blooming. It makes me want to plant and grow things. Potted planted severed hands

Today I'm sharing our take on potted severed Halloween hands. This outdoor Halloween decor was inspired by another project I found a couple of years ago. We made ours last year and put them in the place of my plants that are usually by the front door, along with the spooky potted trees.   I ran out of time for posting these last year and I'm about to do the same this year. I'm off my normal posting schedule this week because we've been on vacation. But we are back and Halloween is on! I decided to take things a step further than the zombie hands project . I bought some hands and severed fingers from the Dollar Tree and then took acrylic paint and painted them to look like bloody, rotted, decaying flesh. I also attached some small pieces of spooky cloth with glue. The hubby attached some dowel rods to them for planting so they would stick up further out of the pots.         These were a fun project to do . Sharing here: T...

Chair to planter

I took an old chair that belonged to my maternal great-grandparents from my mom and converted it to a planter as a surprise for her. She knew I was going to makeover the chair but she thought I was keeping it at my house. She did not know it was for her. This one was pretty easy to convert. The original chair had a leather seat that has long been missing so there was already a square cut in the middle. I just had to find a pot to fit in the hole.   Let me correct myself. My hubby did the painting and found the pot. I planted the flower once he was finished.   Here's the chair when we started. You'll notice in some of the photos that it has been reinforced in some places, like with a piece of wire tied around the edge. My hubby thought that added character and texture so he left some of that in place or put it back after he was finished painting. My grandmother is likely the one who added the reinforcements.   Wire put back in place for cha...

DIY Polka Dot Planters

I was updating my planters and had some extra plants. I also had some extra pots on hand. The problem was that these pots were pretty plain and boring.

Christmas on the front porch

Good morning and welcome to my Christmas porch. It's filled with traditional decor of greenery (artificial), lights, and poinsettias (also artificial).     I swapped out the fall pillows for new Christmas pillows and moved the lanterns to the side table. I filled them with glittery red led candles and poinsettia blooms. I perched some birds on top and added some berries. I love the pop of color it brings for the day time.

Fall pillows from placemats and dish towels

I hope everyone in the area of Sandy is safe and recovering. I've been a little quiet since Halloween, but Halloween is very busy for us, so not much else got accomplished last week and then we had to recover! I finally got a chance to move on to some fall projects this weekend, and I've packed up Halloween and replaced it with fall/thanksgiving items. I'll be sharing some of that later. I replaced the summer back porch items with fall items, and once again, I made pillows from placemats. I found these placemats at Tuesday Morning and knew they would be perfect for fall. These are the easiest pillows ever- just pick out a small section of the seam on a double thickness placemat and stuff with polyfill. Sew your section back up and you are good to go. I also found this fun striped dish towel at Tuesday Morning and loved that it coordinated with my green pillows and still has a fall feel. I was going to make a pillow like these   with two dish towels but the...

Off tabletop candle makeover with Silhouette vinyl

I haven't used my Silhouette nearly enough, but this weekend I busted out some vinyl and whipped this up for my back porch table. While out shopping for some other outdoor items a couple of months ago, I picked up this tabletop Off! Citronella candle. First of all, these are a necessity if you want to be outdoors here, and second, a light bulb went off in my head and I thought this would be great for dressing up with some vinyl decals. I decided to monogram two sides with our initial. I used the GE signature font and sized it to 7.53 x 2.92 inches. Obviously 7.53 is way too large, but that was just the dimension of the text box, not the overall letter. I originally had in mind to do some type of flourish, damask, or fleur on the other two sides, but while browsing the Silhouette shop I found the abstract butterfly flourish .  Since I have a lime green butterfly lantern on my porch already, I just had to use this. It ties in elements from the sitting area to the dining ...
