DIY Baker's twine - Tried it Out Thursday

Hey ya'll! We're getting closer to Friday. I'm still working on some Valentine's things, and doing so as frugally as possible and with what I have on hand. You may have seen these  heart doily jars on pinterest or in blogland. Sumo made her version with baker's twine. I wanted to make some using heart shaped doilies and baker's twine, but I didn't have baker's twine and didn't want to buy any. So what did I do? I made my own baker's twine, inspired by this tutorial here .   I didn't follow the video and I didn't have crochet thread. This is what I had: the cotton twine from my disastrous twine balls! I grabbed it up along with a red marker and stretched some out on a piece of paper. I just colored every 1/4 inch or less, flipped it over, and colored again. Note: I did get ink on my hands doing it this way, so the video tutorial may be a better way. Nonetheless, I made my own baker's twine. Then I used it with some...

Ruffled valentine wreath

So.... I told you yesterday that the fuzzy heart was just a sneak peak and that it was part of a bigger project. Here it is: My ruffle Valentine wreath. My ruffles didn't quite turn out like I planned, but that's the beauty of DIY. You can take something and morph it and make it yours. You can still make things work even when they don't go as planned. I was inspired by this wreath at Sunshine Mama. Since I put myself on a craft spending diet, I started with a cardboard box and cut a circle wreath form, much like she did. Her directions are probably better than mine would be. I started out tracing a cookie sheet and another lid and then got the husband involved with a measuring tape.  Just follow her directions for the base. I coated my cardboard form with Mod Podge for some extra stability as we live in a humid climate and I was afraid the cardboard would not hold up outside. I had some canvas-like material that I bought at Goodwill. When I got it home and unfolde...

A multi-challenge card

This card is one of those little surprises. You know, when you start out with a sketch or idea but you have no idea what the end result will be, because you just don't have the card pictured in your head. And then when you're finished, you're very surprised and pleased. I'm pleased with this. I started with the Dutch Dare Card Challenge to use no pink or red on a love themed card, so I chose black and blue. Well, really, black and white, and the blue somehow just worked its way in there. I used the sketch from CPS . It also fits the challenge for Stamp Something to make a valentine something and Caardvarks heart challenge, so I may just link it up there as well. I heat embossed those silver hearts. I used a heart background stamp that I've had for .. ahem, a few years and had not used yet. Oh.. one more neat detail. The scallops on the heart were made by punching hole punch size circles out of cardstock and gluing them to the edge of the heart. Paper : Cardstock St...
