Charlie Daniels Band 1999 Volunteer Jam Classic Live Performances Volume 1

Genre: Southern Rock

Time: 00:46:13

AMG Review by Michael B. Smith:

Charlie Daniels has pooled together some of the finest moments from Volunteer Jams past to create a historical document of vast importance. Beginning with an all star blow-out on "Can't You See," featuring Toy Caldwell and Paul T. Riddle, along with Papa John Creach, Grinderswitch, Bonnie Bramlett, Wet Willie, Chuck Leavell and the Charlie Daniels Band, the disc explodes with a pool of talent that provides a literal encyclopedia of Southern rock heroes. Jimmy Hall of Wet Willie blows a power soaked blues harp, backed by the guitars of Dru Lombar, Toy Caldwell and Charlie Daniels. Next up is a smoking take on "Statesborro Blues" from Sea Level, accompanied by Jimmy Hall on harp once again and Charlie Daniels on guitar. Hall's vocals soar, and Daniels shows that the fiddle is not his only instrument. Willie Nelson treats the audience to a medley of three of his hits, including "Funny How Time Slips Away," "Crazy" and "The Night Life," all accompanied by the red hot guitar work of Caldwell. The sounds are as exciting as they were in the '70s, and Caldwell's understated lead work begins to move toward the forefront by the third song, with unmistakable Toy riffs dominating the track. So sweet. Ted Nugent steps out in front of Molly Hatchet to burn through the core of the classic Mountain song, "Mississippi Queen," with fire and fury, and Grinderswitch rocks through "Lady Luck." Papa John Creach, the legendary fiddle player for Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, tears through "Down Home Blues" accompanied by the Charlie Daniels Band and the horns of the L.A. Reflection Section, and Wet Willie is joined by Richie Cannata on their biggest ever hit, "Keep on Smilin'."

All you have to do is close your eyes, and suddenly you feel transported back to 1977. Closing the CD out is Daniels and his band, joined by Hall, with their tribute to Southern rockers everywhere, "The South's Gonna Do It." Taz DeGregorio plays an extended piano run, and the rest of the CDB show their stuff as well. Hall blows one of his powerhouse sax solos, and the crowd goes wild. They always go wild at the Volunteer Jams. For everyone who ever attended a Volunteer Jam or for anyone who ever attended a Southern rock concert during the genre's peak years of 1972-1979, this is an album you will not want to miss. For those who just plain enjoy good rock & roll and jamming, this one's for you too. It doesn't get much better than this.

Biography by Bruce Eder

Toy Caldwell was best known as the lead guitarist and main songwriter in the Marshall Tucker Band. A unique personality as well as a formidable musician, he was a peer of both Dickey Betts and Charlie Daniels, and his best work crossed effortlessly between country, blues, and rock & roll. A few years after the breakup of the Marshall Tucker Band in the late '80s, he re-emerged as leader of the Toy Caldwell Band, which played small-scale shows of the kind that the Marshall Tucker Band couldn't do. He also recorded one solo album before his death in early 1993. Although most of his fame inevitably rests with the Marshall Tucker Band, Caldwell left behind a small but glorious body of solo material.

Toy Caldwell was perhaps one of the most underrated guitar players of the 70’s. He wrote and sang “Can’t You See”, among other The Marshall Tucker Band classics and contributed a great deal to creation of Marshall Tucker sound with his famous thumb pickin’ guitar playing style. During the Marshall Tucker Bands induction to South Carolina Hall of Fame in 1995, lead vocalist Doug Gray even called Toy Caldwell ‘the backbone of The Marshall Tucker Band’.

Toy Caldwell started his music career in the 60’s with The Rants. During that time, his brother Tommy Caldwell was also playing with other local musicians and had a band New Generation. Between 1966 and 1969 Toy served with Marine Corps and was wounded in Vietnam. After his return from ‘Nam, The Rants and New Generation merged into The Marshall Tucker Band.

Between 1973 and 1978, The Marshall Tucker Band released seven gold- and platinum albums. They created timeless classics like Fire On The Mountain, Take the Highway and shared stages with legends like The Allman Brothers Band and Wet Willie.

After the original Marshall Tucker Band disbanded in 1983, Toy Caldwell formed his owned band named the Toy Caldwell Band, kept touring and eventually released one solo album in 1992. (http://www.puresouthernrock.com)

Review by Bruce Eder

Many a guitar player, knowing he might never live to 50, could go a lot more willingly knowing they'd left behind a concert disc like this on which their memory might rest. Cut at Shooters in Spartanburg, SC in May 1992, this concert features Caldwell playing soaring solos (ably supported by Pic Peters on slide and rhythm) and singing full-out on every song, including a bunch of old classics ("Heard It In a Love Song," "Searchin' for a Rainbow," "Can't You See," "Ab's Song"), and a blues standard ("Milk Cow Blues") or two, along with some newer stuff ("Mexico"), which gave him a chance to play some classical guitar riffs on his electric axe. Maybe you'd rather hear his old band doing "24 Hours at a Time" (clocking in at 13 minutes, here, incidentally, without a wasted note), but Caldwell's singing is pretty expressive in its own right, and this is a pretty good band -- they not only keep up, but Kenny Smith even provides some pleasing flourishes on the keyboards. The live set is rounded out with two 1990 studio tracks, including a hard-rocking instrumental cover of "High Noon."
