Time: 00:51:32

Album Notes

Produced by legendary drummer, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Tino Gonzales' album 'Smiles For Miles', has all the makings of a classic. Mixing Blues and Latin Rythms, adding the right amount of Funk and Fusion -- the recipe for noteworthy music is clearly defined here. Tino's gutsy, Blue vocals combined with searing guitar leads intertwine with some of the finest assembled studio and marquee players. The performances are as deserving of praise as the artists themselves. Multiple Grammy winner Freddy Hubbard, in fine form, gives outstanding deliveries on each creditable track. The wonderful Paul Harris furnishes the most memorable piano solo on the title track, a melodic Latin Blues Fusion number that blends Hubbard with a soulful measure of Gonzales and company. Tom Washington's arrangements of the Phenix Horns Esquire illustrates why they keyed countless million selling albums. Of course, the incomparible "King of the Beat", Bernard Purdie displays his inimitable driving meter, as well as steering the production through its grand conclusion.

The concept for this cd is exactly what the title says, the many different kinds of blues throughout the world. The blues of injustice, of a broken heart, of misunderstandings, of a drug addict, of young talent thinking they know it all, of a country that is obsessed with power and greed, of a dancer, of a mistake, of love and compassion, and finally a hope for peace! For each one of these there is a song on this cd. Listen to the words and find where they fit. Each cd that I make is but a vehicle for my small voice in this life. To those I offend my sincere apologies and to those that I touch, carry your own message of peace and love in these very difficult times!! "Ye not know that ye are all Gods"

peace and happiness always!!!

"Tino shows us that he is not just a one-dimensional player but rather has a strong command of the entire guitar neck and of differing styles of music. I can best describe this tune as what would happen if you took George Benson's style and spiced it up with a good dash of funk and a big slab of the blues." (Southwest Blues Magazine Blues Review)

This set features some exceptional Tino Gonzales original songs including the slow blues of "Young Thing", the uptempo blues/rocking "Piece of Work" (my favorite on the set), and the powerful "It's a Rock and Roll World", which was recorded live in concert. There are also some great covers and other live tracks, as well. The supporting players are first rate, the sound quality excellent, but the unquestionable star of the show on each song is Tino Gonzales. If you like blues/rock guitar, he is about as good as it gets. (http://www.bluesrockers.ws/tinogonzales.html)

Tino Gonzales 1999 Tequila Nights

Genre: Blues
Rate: 192 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:56:14
Size: 77,15 MB

France

This CD is also known as "Strange Brew".

Tino Gonzales is not your ordinary, run of the mill, 'hum drum' blues guy. No. He occupies a league of his own and he is a force to be reckoned with. His music cuts across not just one but many traditional boundaries and combines Blues, Jazz, Funk and Latin influences into a fiery blend all of his own. He plays and sings with a rare passion that has earned him the reputation of burning up the stage wherever he goes.

Gonzales doesn't like being labeled and throughout his career he has broken out of the conventional mold to suit his own path. "I'm a maverick in this business" he says if himself, "I have always done things my own way". He has turned down many record deals and career opportunities in the past because of their restrictive nature. "I don't want to be burned out by the time I am 50", he says, "there is more to life than being carted around from one city to the next, playing in smoke-filled bars night after night. As an independent I can choose where and when I want to play and don't have no obligations to no-one". And as for making records, "I can do it myself". He currently has 6 CDs out to prove his point. Recently the French Blues label Dixiefrog has released a couple of his earlier recordings, and has just released a new CD, "Modern Day Hobo", recorded entirely in Europe.

His independant way of thinking permeates Gonzales' whole life-style. He has never been one to settle down and get too comfortable for too long in any one place. At the spur of the moment he may decide to pick up and go to explore the stages of another city, state or even country. His wanderlust has taken him from his boyhood home in Chicago all across the US, Canada and Europe and wherever he goes he is confident that with his guitar in hand he can soon draw a crowd and spice up the local music scene. "I have done it all my life" he says, "my stage is just getting bigger". (http://www.watershed-arts.com)

Tino Gonzales Biography

Born in the Southside of the Bluestown Chicago in 1951, Tino Gonzales, grew up with the sounds of Latin, Blues, R & B, Jazz, and Soul. All have contributed to his musical foundations. Having served his apprenticeship with a wide range of blues, pop and jazz greats he eventually set off on his solo career in 1985.

But as a Mexican American with a streak of Arabic heritage, the Latin blood flows equally in his veins. His music encompasses all of these varied cultural influences resulting in a unique sound that can not easily be labeled in terms of conventional categories – but if one had to sum it up in one word it would have to be passion!

Gonzales' incredible virtuoso style is so fluid it seems as though he pours his soul right into his guitar as he floats up and down its neck, coaxing from it sounds and vibrations hitherto unknown. He changes styles more often than many musicians know how to change keys and in any direction he chooses, whether Latin, Jazz, Blues, R & B or Soul, he plays with the same passionate fire and fluidity.

As top US westcoast DJ Steve Pringle from KMHD radio in Portland, Oregon once put it, 'I have no frikken idea why you aren't better known. Not for lack of talent, sound, writing...it's all good!`

... One of the reasons undoubtedly is Gonzales free-spirited and independent way of thinking, which has earned him the reputation of being a maverick in the business. He resisted the temptation of signing with major labels on more than one occasion, because he refuses to let himself be exploited, run down and spat out by the industry as he has seen happening to so many of his friends and peers.

Instead, he goes his own way, sometimes a rough and tumble road, but free from any demands from labels who require extensive touring. After years of touring the US and Canada Gonzales grew tired of the same old Club and Festival scene, packed his Hobo bag and decided to sail east. Since his arrival on European shores Gonzales has certainly made some big waves over here.

Having finally found a label he could work with he signed with one of the leading European independents, the French Blues label Dixiefrog Records. So far he has recorded four CDs for them, each one a masterpiece in its own right with the unique Tino Gonzales touch. All have received rave reviews in the international press.

Currently he has signed with the Belgium label MusicAvenue. His musical career reflects a process of transformation and artistic growth that is becoming more apparent with every new CD he records. Traveling throughout Europe, from France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, England, Luxemburg and Germany, to Spain, Turkey, Italy and even a few eastern European countries such as Slovenia and Hungary, Gonzales has become deeply influenced by the Old World roots of the same soulful music he grew up on in the States.

Spanish, Gypsy, Arabic and African influences, which originally contributed to both, Latin and Black American music, have all found their way into his repertoire. His unique blend of Latin, Jazz and Blues fusion has resulted in a phenomenal melange of musical influences all of which speak the same language - passion.

Passion for music, passion for love, passion for life – and compassion for the state of the world. Gonzales' passion is not just show. He deeply cares about humanity and planet earth. To him the essence of music is about communication and conveys a message that applies to the human condition everywhere and throughout all of time. He plays and sings the sounds of peace, love, anger, humor, joy and the politics of the world. One of his songs, an exquisite slow blues tune, gives a message of peace to the world, appealing to each and everyone of us not to add 'No More Misery'...

Tino Gonzales 2003 Nuke The World

Genre: Blues
Rate: 256 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:54:16
Size: 99,27 MB

Tino Gonzales, the guitar-slinging Chicago 'chicano', returns again with another uncompromising, punchy, but groovy blues/rock album (his 4th for Dixiefrog). A record clearly committed against the official political decisions of the present American government. Apart from two cool Latino instrumentals, Tino uses his lyrics to comment on recent developments in world affairs.

The rhythm section is as funky as it could be: with drummer Kenny Martin (Defunct, Jaco Pastorious, etc) and bass player Darryl Taylor (Kenny Burrell, Archie Bell, etc). But there's more: top blues harp-man and fellow Dixiefrog recording artist, Nico Wayne Toussaint, adds his considerable talent; as does brilliant new young Dutch guitarist, Sjors Nederlof - especially his amazing playing on the opening track.(www.discovery-records.com)

...a bridge between Chicago and Mexico and Latin sounds, always a pleasure to our ears! - Le Cri du Coyote

...the veritable perle of the album is the last track, dedicated to the people of France, who said 'no' to the war, called "Here! My freedom sing". For 9.34 minutes, Tino rivals the best of guitar heroes. One of his best albums recorded. - Zicline

Here is an album that does not lack ambition. Tino Gonzales satisfies his audience with a solid album of blues, rock and funk, all put together in a beautiful package. - La Marseiilaise

Tino Gonzales 1999 Double Feature

Genre: Blues

Review by Cub Koda

Some critics have called Gonzales "the Latin-American Stevie Ray Vaughan," but a closer listen also shows bits of B.B. King and Carlos Santana popping up in Tino's Latin-with-the-blues style.

Double Feature is a reissue of Gonzales' debut CD, originally released in 1994 on Remedy Records, with the previously unissued-in-the-U.S. EP Live at the Chameleon Club. Tino does a nice job on a pair of Ray Agee tunes ("Talk About Love," "Leave Me Alone") and covers of tunes by McKinley Mitchell, Howlin' Wolf, and old chestnuts like Jimmy Reed's "Big Boss Man" and Andre Williams' "Twine Time".

But it's the original material here that impresses the most; songs like "Piece of Work," "Young Thing," and the title track end up being the shining moments on the studio portion of the disc. The three live EP bonus tracks are Gonzales in his true element: cool, relaxed and playing with a particular passion on the closing "Midnight Blues" that makes all the comparisons to Stevie Ray seem unfounded. Tino Gonzales has his own story to tell.
