Savoy Brown 2007 Steel

Guitar howlin' like the wolf. Vocals kicked back and rockin' (Simmonds does the singing through out on this one). Great line up.

Kim really gets to the point and shows off his guitar work in a way that may have been missing from some of his more recent releases. This is a high energy blues/rock showcase. I would love to supply you with a list of the best songs from this release, but I would have to list each one. They are all fantastic! New fan, old fan, buy this CD. You will not regret it. Hey Kim, thanks for keeping the dream alive!...and thanks for this treat. (Thomas D. Christianson)

Savoy Brown 2000 Looking From The Outside - Live '69 - '70

Genre: Blues-Rock

Time: 01:13:29
Size: 101,09 MB

This is one of 2 recent releases of live material from the 70s versions of Savoy B. These releases are mainly for fans of the band as the sound quality is just OK. I, for one, am still very glad this stuff was made available.

Looking From the Outside features 4 songs with Chris Youlden on vocals (the 1st 4) and the rest are from the Looking In line up. This is the first time many of these songs have been available in live versions and it documents what a dynamic band Savoy B was during this time.I've always wished the Looking In line up would have stayed together longer and this demonstrates what a nice blend they had. And Chris Youlden, well there was just something special about him... The Savoys were always little more rock oriented live than in the studio and you get the sense that these guys really liked playing live. (bruceski)

Savoy Brown 1988 Make Me Sweat

Genre: Rock

After listening to this again tonight, I kept trying to think of how to describe it. It's really really fine stuff - even the couple parts that you sort of feel as though you shouldn't like, you know you do. I'm pretty sure "Make Me Sweat" is a lost classic, because it's an undeservedly obscure Savoy Brown session that rocks very hard and displays great musicianship throughout, not to mention outstanding songs.

Highly recommended! (burritobroth)

Savoy Brown 1985 Live In Central Park

Genre: Blues-Rock
Rate: 128 kbps CBR / 44100

United Kingdom

I believe it was 1970 when Savoy Brown headlined a tripple bill tour including Fleetwood Mac and Long John Baldry. Long John Baldry opened the show with the now classic English style blues/rock, Fleetwood Mac put the audience to sleep and Savoy Brown blew the house away and demonstrated that rock can be fun. They were there for a party and everyone was welcome. I filled my youth attending the classic rock bands from the 60's and 70's and can not remember a band that appeared to have more fun on stage.

As I update my music retrospect it is hard to find albums that capture not only the music but the experience. This album does both better than any live album I own. Let it Rock and Hip Shake are classic rockers streched to allow for the trademark long guitar and keyboard solos of the late 60's and these ones hold up today. Tell Moma covers their limited commercial success and The Saddest Feeling has grown to be one of my favorite blues stylings. The CD jacket says it all, voted best concert that year and references to their emphisis on making rock a party.

This album should appeal to those who are seeking a slice of how good it could get in those early years of rock concerts and those with studio Savoy Brown albums that would like a sense of the onstage personna of the band. Rock lives on in this CD. (mark)

Savoy Brown 1981 Rock 'n' Roll Warriors

Genre: Rock
Rate: 128 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:52:41
Size: 49,70 MB

United Kingdom

Review by Joe Viglione

Though Savoy Brown is primarily known as a blues band, Rock 'n' Roll Warriors says in the title what this is all about, as Kim Simmonds' aggregation obtained in vocalist Ralph Mormon a major component from the Joe Perry Project's first solo album, Let the Music Do the Talking, released the year before this. With producer Richie Wise, himself the lead singer of the heavy metal band Dust and co-producer of the first two albums from Kiss, there is a decidedly different edge to this release on Capitol/Town House.

The bandmembers look like they are the prototype for the 1984 film Streets of Fire on the cover, and though the three live tracks tacked onto the end of the LP on TKO Magnum's CD release has this group truer to its blues roots, the original ten studio tunes include some variety that Savoy Brown's followers may not have been accustomed to. Those bonus tracks, "Street Corner Talkin'," "I'm Tired," and "Hellbound Train," were recorded live at Denver's Rainbow Music Hall on June 27, 1981. They make a great reference point to hear how this version of the band tackled familiar territory, but original material like "Shot Down By Love" could easily have found itself on Joe Perry's disc and shows the bite producer Wise infused into this version of the group. This is the last Savoy Brown album to chart in the U.S., which is validation of its quality but still a shame, since the music here is vital enough to have jump-started SB's storied career. Mormon sounds comfortable and in control; that he had the opportunity to front bands featuring two guitar greats is something you can feel he embraced wholeheartedly.

Michael Heatley's year 2000 liner notes to the CD reissue give some history and the Chinn/Chapman tune that hit for the U.K. band Smokie, "Lay Back in the Arms of Someone," is a real treat -- pure pop that is wildly different from the band's minor '70s radio hit, "Tell Mama," or anything else here. The songs are mostly composed by Kim Simmonds, were recorded in North Hollywood, and shift from rock to blues to rock. Though viewed as an anomaly in the band's catalog, Rock 'n' Roll Warriors has gained credibility and much-deserved respect over the years.

Savoy Brown 1970 Raw Sienna

Genre: Blues
Rate: 256 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:37:39
Size: 68,87 MB

United Kingdom

Raw Sienna is an important album in that it represents the end of the road for the Chris Youlden blues era and foreshadows the more straight-forward rock era to begin with Looking In. The heroin-for-lunch-bunch loved this album despite the message of moderation set forth in Needle and Spoon. Guess the second part of that song was the part they tuned out. I was fourteen when I first heard the album and side 1 was a little rough for me despite my being partial to a good horn section. It is side 2 that really stands out. Every song is memorable. Listen to the emotion screaming out in the clotted voice of Chris Youlden on I'm Crying, to the mellow seduction of Stay While the Night is Young, and to the instrumental prowess on display on Is That So? When I Was a Young Boy forcefully expresses the regrets and shoulda, coulda, wouldas of many a man. Drummers will appreciate the understated percussion on this side and instrumental aficionados will be spellbound by Is That So? If you own only one Savoy Brown album, that album should be Raw Sienna. Savoy Brown 1970 Looking In

Genre: Blues-Rock
Rate: 256 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:39:38
Size: 72,67 MB

United Kingdom

Review by Mike DeGagne

Savoy Brown's blues-rock sound takes on a much more defined feel on 1970's Looking In and is one of this band's best efforts. Kim Simmonds is utterly bewildering on guitar, while Lonesome Dave Peverett does a fine job taking over lead singing duties from Chris Youlden who left halfway through the year. But it's the captivating arrangements and alluring ease of the music that makes this a superb listen.

The pleading strain transformed through Simmonds' guitar on "Money Can't Save Your Soul" is mud-thick with raw blues, and the comfort of "Sunday Night" is extremely smooth and laid back. "Take It Easy" sounds like it could have been a B.B. King tune as it's doused with relaxed guitar fingering. The entire album is saturated with a simple, British blues sound but the pace and the marbled strands of bubbly instrumental perkiness fill it with life. Even the Yardbirds-flavored "Leaving Again" is appealing with its naïve hooks, capped off with a heart-stopping guitar solo.

This album along with Street Corner Talking best exemplify Savoy Brown's tranquilizing style.
