Time: 00:42:13
Size: 67,96 MB

Album Notes

Jazz organist Adam Scone remains true to his art form. Adam feels it is essential to keep the sound of the Hammond B3 organ alive. He has dedicated his life to this task.

On this release Scone explores moods of the Hammond organ that are often left untouched. It is not your typical jazz-organ experience. This record dives into the dark side of the sound and exposes the inner beauty.

Adam Scone, Hammond B-3 Organ
Ian Hendrickson-Smith, Alto Saxophone
Coleman Mellett, Guitar
Ben Dixon, Drums

"This CD is unreal!!! If you feeling mellow, you can kick back to it. If you are feeling pumped you can enjoy the grooves and move a bit. If you just want to appreciate a great sound, this is the CD. This CD is AMBIENCE!!!" (Rob Matthews)

Secret Oyster 1974 Sea Son

Genre: Jazz-Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:49:27
Size: 113,10 MB

Denmark

This is a lost classic from these relatively unheard of Danish jazz fusion/psychsters. A very tight unit that at times sound like the Mahavishnu Orchestra albeit more laid back, especially the violin on track two "Mind Movie", and the build up on "Pajamamafia" is very Birds of Fire era 'vishnu. The Secret Oyster could also put together some great pieces of music some times very hypnotic as is the case with said mentioned "Mind Movie" with a looping riff over some nice guitar work from Claus Bøling. Soft Machine also come to mind occasionally but the songs the Oyster produce really stand up on their own though the sound would be the same time zone as during 1973-'74 the Soft Machine added a guitarist to their line up, and as much as I like the Soft Machine, I find Sea Son a much more listenable and working experimental album as opposed to Softs or Bundles as these two records were more akin to Jazz/rock fusion more than the earlier Soft Machine work but lacked the bite, raw energy or innocence of the earlier work.

Sea Son is certainly a fresh and engrossing album with plenty of raw action. All round The Secret Oyster put together a fine collection of tracks on their second album which then is all the more surprising that they have remained almost an obscure unit (though signed to the mighty CBS who virtually looked after the majority of jazz and jazz related acts) when at that time during the early to mid seventies the fusion genre took flight and many acts used it very successfully, some arguably with a lesser talent and craft than the Secret Oyster, but such is life. I had come across their name in conversation a few times over the years and the albums kept alluding me and I began to wonder was it just a myth or something. I don't know if these are available on CD but they should be searched out, they are quite collectible on vinyl. Certainly a must and especially for those who are fans of the fusion era. Very rewarding music that deserves attention. (http://www.progarchives.com)

Sax Gordon 2000 You Knock Me Out

Genre: Jazz
Rate: 192 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:52:29
Size: 72,38 MB

United States

Review by Alex Henderson

When Charlie Parker and other beboppers were demonstrating how complex and intellectual saxophone playing could be, the honkers favored a much more accessible, groove-oriented approach. Gordon "Sax Gordon" Beadle's funky, grits-and-gravy style of tenor sax playing is right out of the honker school, and his very extroverted You Knock Me Out is a throwback to the days when Willis Jackson, Big Jay McNeely, Arnett Cobb, Doc Sausage, and others weren't afraid to play the you-know-what out of their horns.

Indeed, hard-blowing instrumentals like "Crawling Home," "Lorenzo Leaps In," and "Speed Rack" (all of them Gordon originals) sound like they could have been written in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Red Tyler's "Lonely for You," with its dusky, evocative, "Harlem Nocturne"-ish mood, conjures up thoughts of an era of burlesque shows, Mike Hammer novels, and film-noir thrillers starring Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd. Though Gordon loves the honker era, the saxman/singer occasionally detours into 1960s soul. "90 MPH" (one of the tunes he sings on), for instance, and "BY-YA" wouldn't have been out of place on a Stax release in the 1960s; the latter, in fact, has a Booker T-ish appeal thanks to Tom West's organ playing.

No, this jazz/R&B/blues effort isn't innovative, and yes, Gordon plays his share of clichés, but he plays them with a lot of heart and passion, making You Know Me Out quite rewarding if you're a lover of the tenor saxophone's honker school.

Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks 1969 Original Recordings

Genre: Jazz/Swing/Country/Western
Rate: 256 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:41:26
Size: 75,75 MB

United States

Review by Lindsay Planer

Original Recordings was Dan Hicks' initial solo effort as well as the debut of his "Hot Licks." Unlike the overamplified electric jug band music that the Charlatans had been creating during Hicks' stint as their drummer and occasional vocalist, this new band performed a refreshing blend of jazz swing with country & western. Their understated performance style stood in strong contrast to the burgeoning heavy metal and acid rock that were en vogue as the '60s became the '70s.

Featured on this album is a seminal version of the "Hot Licks" that were only together briefly. Included are John Weber (guitar) and Terry Wilson (drums) as well as vocalists Tina Viola Gancher and Sherry Snow. Both Sid Page (violin/vocals) and Jaime Leopold (acoustic bass) would remain with Hicks (guitar/vocals/spoken word) as core members of the band.

Of the 11 original compositions on this disc, "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away" followed Hicks from the Charlatans, while "Canned Music," "I Scare Myself," and "Shorty Falls in Love" would be slightly reworked for their inclusion on the upcoming long-players Where's the Money? and Striking It Rich, respectively. Perhaps because of Hicks' background as a drummer, his sense of timing is a key element to his deceptively complex melodies. Likewise, this has a great deal to do with the success of the call-and-response vocals between Hicks and the female background vocalists he would dub "the Lickettes." Within these pastoral melodies and slightly askew lyrics is the somewhat out-of-sync and acid-tinged "It's Bad Grammar, Baby." In retrospect, the prominently distorted acoustic guitar lead overwhelms the track -- which would have otherwise fit nicely within the context of the remainder of the album. This might have had something to do with it being conspicuously left off the 2001 Sony/Legacy reissue Canned Music: The Most of Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks. Those who can locate a copy of these Original Recordings are urged to do so. For Hicks-ophiles or Dan-ophites, it is a vital entry into his canon.

"This album was conceived as a series of street moods, hence the titles, short, to the point, and reminiscent of typical street slang... Listening to "Bad Blues", you have to imagine the large metropolis in the early hours with neon lights glimmering off wet pavements an the night people going about their business... "Sax Rap" features Barbara's original talking saxophone, instead of the more romance amidst the chaos of the city... "You must Be Jokin'" is a piece based on a typically English phrase, and dedicated to Ronnie Scott, his incredibly funny jokes and his internationally famous Jazz Club in the heart of London's Soho... where you would probably sit sipping that long cool drink while tapping your toes to "Jaunty"... "Cheeky" mirrors the bright costumes and festive atmosphere of any big City's Carnival week... "Squiffy" reflects the feeling of being high on anything that turns you on... "Gracey" is both graceful and folky, yearning for the neauty and peace so hard to find in the concrete jungle... from the CD cover
