Catalog Sunday

Oops, forgot to post this this morning!
Lane Bryant 1942

1960s Wedding Dress Recreation: pt 2 Making the Dress, and that Fabric, yo!

Behold! The most expensive fabric I've ever worked with!
I believe this is a Lyon type of lace. All I know is that it's french.

This is the fabric for the sleeves and the bodice. When I discovered it, I sent a pick to my friend, and she LOVED it, until we both saw the price. It was in the glass case, after all. I should have known...

Catalog Sunday: XL

Hey everyone! Sorry for my absence, you know, life and all. To make up for me purposefully missing last week's Catalog Sunday, this week I have a great summer sales one from Sears, 1944!

Fashion Show!!!

Hello lovely people.
It's been hot here. Way too hot, and although I have been sewing, it's been wool and it's been icky.

Catalog Sunday

Yay! I'm back! Got my internets back yesterday! Squeeeee!!!

Today I have an extra large dose of wartime Wards fashions; Spring/Summer 1944.

Fashion Show Extreme!!

Hi all!
Thanks for your words on my last post. But I am done with swing dancing.
I may look at it again next year, but I don't think so.

I have a lot of free time now. Truthfully, I've been sleeping more this week. It's been good. I also decided to do a 10 day juice fast just to clear out my system. You can read about that a bit here.

I have spent the week going on long walks and doing some sewing. I've finished a ton of projects, some for other people and some for me.

The Red Sweater re-work

How do you all feel about re-working vintage garments?

I LOVE restoring vintage garments. There is nothing better for me than giving new life to a garment that has been around longer than me twice over. I also love repairing or taking a garment from graveyard status and re-working it to give it new life. When the person who gets it is thrilled with the results, there's no better feeling in the world.

As I was working on some of the many things I made and attempted to make for myself for Camp Hollywood last month, one project I did got a lot of unexpected attention!

My friend, and dance teacher is working out a trade with me. She brought me this sweater: mid-late 50's, cropped, short sleeve, cashmere, and cheery red. SO cute! Only, a sweater like this was made to be worn by itself. Meaning, nothing beneath. Lets just say that with wear, and a lot of dancing, it's had it's share of stress.

Calico dress commission.

I love my followers. You all are the most supportive and interested folks I've come across. I'm happy that you all get what you do from my ramblings, and it thrills me when you seek me out and trust me with a garment to make.

One of my readers/etsy customers commissioned me for a dress. The event she wanted to wear it to was a WWII even in her town. She was frustrated with the lack of items in her size, and wanted a nice respectful period dress.

I was the person to call.

My first bias cut skirt, and a vacation.

I have this bias cut skirt I got a long time ago at Macy's for a song. It's an Eddie Bauer, and it's black linen, fully lined. I remember wearing it the other night to Cicada club and just loving the way it swooshed and galloped as I walked. Of course a lot of that was because of the weight of the fabric, and even the lining, but it felt so feminine and sexy.

Then I got to thinking, why don't I ever make my own bias cut items?

Well, as I'm sure you all know, it takes up mega tons of fabric. Mega tons is an understatement, shit load would be more accurate.

A new blouse is finished!

Gooooooood morning one and all.
Isn't it great to be busy? I love it. It makes me feel kind of important and even thought I have tons to do, in those brakes of chaos, I try to find something that I can do in order to fill the few hours.

Making clothes for myself lately has been the 'fill in' time. Normally, I can dedicate sewing to its own day. I do miss that, but I'm having so much fun lately, and I'm looking like a hobo in my oversized clothes, that I really needed to find, or rather make the time to get my behind some new clothes.

It has not been easy, but actually, eating better helps. I'm not always tired after work, and I can cram in a couple hours of sewing before dance class, or whatever else I need to do.

So the 30's blouse I was starting on a little while ago has been all fitted and ready to go. It just screams two tone, though, I want to do one solid with cool piping.

Couch cushions 100% complete!

Don't they look great?! Well, hold on. I'm sure most of you by now are noticing my 30 second photoshop job, and realizing that this is just the first finished couch turned sideways.

But THIS is the arrangement I want...I'm hoping for. Because, you see, MY OTHER COUCH FRAME IS MIA!!!

My couch is finished!

FYI: I won't be posting anymore to SewRetro. I'm sure it's run by swell people, but since the switch to wordpress, it's become more 'vintagey' than actual vintage, and that's just not my deal. My last post of vintage furniture was not in their 'guidelines' so they took it down even though I've been doing Catalog Sunday for years on the site (with other furniture posts I might add). I wish them luck, and it's not like I did much contributing in recent months anyway :) So be sure to mark your own calendars for my Catalog Sunday posts which will be about whatever the fuck I want them to be about! :D

Okay! Onto the couch. It's finished! And I love it.

Ten yards of fabric, FORTY yards of piping, eight 30" zippers,
and four broken needles later, I have a finished sofa.

Royalchrome Restoration pt 4

I blew off a night out to work on these! I couldn't stop thinking about them! Then I completed my first one, and I saw this project was indeed possible!

Royalchrome restoration pt3

Good morning everyone. I hope your weekend was nice. Mine was. I finally had my housewarming and I considered it a big success! It was my first party ever and I had a big turnout. More on that tomorrow.

That's why I was MIA last week. I was preparing for the party, that, and I went out dancing 4 nights in a row. Um, yeah....that does not leave much time for blogging.

But now that my party is over, and I'm settled, as in I've put everything away, I'm ready to tell you all about my Royarlchrome progress.

Okay, last Thursday I left work an hour early and traveled to downtown LA (in rush hour) to get the eight cushions I ordered for my two Royalchrome couches.

Half of the cushions
(not counting the top wedges).

Spoils of the Fabric District

Good morning everyone.
I have had a super busy weekend, and another busy week. It's been planned since the weekend: Monday, dancing. Tuesday, laundry. Wednesday, dancing. Thursday LACMA (museum of art). Friday, packing. Saturday, packing and dancing. Even Sunday is full. Whew!

Oh, I don't know if I posted this, but here is a photo of my new apartment building.

November Pattern Showcase!!

Good morning everyone! I hope your last month of the year is going good.
Patterns for this past November have been very precice.

Fun with flowers

It was too hot to go out and really do anything a few days ago, so I turned on the fan, pulled out the tripod and got out some flowers.

And the winner is....

Elisabeth!!!!

Congratulations! Just send me an email and I'll send your pattern to you quickly.
Thanks for all those who entered the give away!
