Coral ombre - or whatever it's called...

I felt like a bit of coral but it's fairly boring so I did 5.
They are:

Missguided Misschievous *
Nails Inc Drury Lane *
Rimmel Apricot Punch
Jessica My Cabana Boy
Rimmel Sunrise
* first time I've used them

3 coats of each to greater or lesser effect...

Conclusions
  • The Missguided is a tad red in some lights - certainly the best coverage/quality except maybe Sunrise which is a bit frosty/shimmery so not exactly comparable
  • The cremes I'd used before had gone gloopy - boo - I don't like gloopy
  • They all look closer on the nail than in the bottle - weird - so it didn't turn out as expected
  • The Jessica turned out neon and matte (not as I had remembered it)

I had to slather serum (hair serum) over my hands to make any photo even remotely acceptable. First off I used the 'vignette' function in iPhoto to try to capture the colours whilst simultaneously disguising my sloughing-snakesin mitts. Yuk. I quite like the vignette feature. Can cover a multitude of sins. In dire need of Photoshop.

Doesn't coral come in lots of colours? So why do we call this soft-orange 'coral'? Anybody know anything about coral? The more you say it the odder it sounds as a word, I find.

Rimmel Play Fast Camouflage + Hello again...

Been moving my mother down from Shropshire to live in a new home two miles down the road from me. Busy.Wore a mani for a straight week. Priorities.

  • Focus is rubbish.
  • State of nails and skin likewise rubbish.
  • Polish is fantastic! 2 coats and one would probably do it.
Why, oh why, do companies discontinue some of their best-quality formulae and shades? Barking. Not as if Rimmel is a high-fashion label that has to be avant-garde...

On that topic I notice a couple of highly-desirable new collections out. Illamasqua Toxic Nature. I don't have enough reserves of hyperbole for that one. And BB Couture Touch of Greece (damn silly name but stunning colours).

And in closing:

A photograph of my grandson and my dog. I rather like the pouty pose. He was eating one of his beloved apples. Dog is naturally intent on fate of apple. He would gladly eat the scraps from his master's table/hand.

Personal photos on a nail blog?
  • Too much information. Yawn.
  • OK in moderation.
  • Nice to have a bit of personal background.

Rimmel Play Fast Scene Stealer

Mashed my middle finger on a kitchen cupboard. I am clumsier than a hippo at a hog-roast.

As part of a recent cheapo purchase (is there any other kind?) I got this and Rimmel Cafe au Lait (part of the French Manicure range).  Really French manicures and I don't inhabit the same space-time continuum - or even ones that are a few shifts to the left - but I bought it for what seemed like a good reason at the time.

The Cafe au Lait was the base with SS on top. I love the SS. It's the first Play Fast polish I have and I am looking for best-price on the funky blue and purple and orange ones now. Ebay seems the best bet.

Lots of coats except on the mashed-up middle finger. Look at the pureeeetty bottle. This is way better IRL than it looks here.

I always used to despise Rimmel but I can't remember why. Their polishes are great and they make Diva Red which is one of the best red lipsticks you can get. Sorry, Rimmel.

Is there a brand for which you have an unreasoning dislike?

Rimmel Deliciously Dark

One I got from a bargain bin at TJ Hughes.
Very glossy. Plum/damson but does lean black. 2 coats.

I have others like this. Zoya Casey and Nails Inc Victoria. So the latter two will be getting the elbow. I haven't even tried the Nails Inc so that's unopened.

Got 2 more polishes in the post and then I'm telling myself to stop/halt/desist.

Knowing me though I'll just get a bee in my bonnet about something else. Charity shops probably - you know, trying to cultivate a certain individual style as inspired by Vintage Vixen and CALAMITY JEM'S VINTAGE VAUDEVILLE. Look, I can TRY!!!!!! Don't laugh.....Just because I'm a bit *ahem* less physically favoured than those ladies.

Enjoy the allegedly good weather we're supposed to be experiencing.

Rimmel Sunrise + Barielle Blossom

Popped in to TJ Hughes. They had a whole load of Rimmel for £1.99. And not just sad old pinks either! You have to check up on TJ Hughes. Got a Stila moisturiser for £1.99 as well. They are a good place to get skin care stuff IMO.

3 coats but it's the 60 second stuff and it went on as easy as an easy thing.
Blossom is 2 coats and still streaky but I didn't notice before I did the photo-thing.
Sunrise is so preeeeeettty
It's not exactly a thrill-ride into oblivion and beyond but it is a nice polish.

Mind you, 8ml isn't much so it isn't even a great bargain. Oh, what the hell....

An ad from 1968. Cutex.

It's a bit eerie due to the "foreign fingers".  Makes the whole face look distorted. And casts unbecoming shadows on the face. Oo, hark at her. Graphic design expert or what? NOT.

Believe me, I was there in '68 and we didn't all wear washed-out shimmers. Bright lime green and banana yellow were my favourites in those days.

What nail colours did you wear when you started out with nail varnish? And, if it's not giving too much away, how old were you and when was it?

Rimmel Apricot Punch

From the Lasting Finish range. New apparently. Fruities. Meaning it's supposed to smell nice. It does too. Faint and "chemically" but still nice enough.

3 coats but I never leave coats to dry between applications so it doesn't take a long time. Didn't do enough ridge-fill preparation but too bad....

I would never wear coral colours in clothing but I do like it as a polish shade even though I feel faintly old-lady. The lemon colour in this range has got some good reviews and I do have a soft spot for yellow polishes even though they don't suit me so I may get that one.

What do you insist on wearing just because you like it even though it's wildly out of fashion/doesn't really flatter you?

Rimmel Sky High + Models Own Slate Green

Seems to me I either always wear these shades or pinks!

I love these though. I did go through a spell of detesting cremes but the Boots ridge filler has improved my relationship therewith.

Got these because there's a stack of reductions on asos. The Rimmel was £2 and I do like the 60 seconds brush while the MO was £3. They have a clutch of Ciate reduced and some Illamasqua. In short, I got 5 polishes for about £13. The manner of their packaging left much to desired and it is a minor miracle that they arrived unscathed. Don't recall having had that problem with asos before. The dread inspired by the clinking of bottles as one carries the parcel to the kitchen. Ta DA da da da da da da ta DA da da............
In this case the shark left me unmolested (you do know that was the "Jaws" theme, yes?) and I lived to paint my nails.

Rimmel - 2 coats
MO - a frustrating 3 to 4 before full un-streakiness was achieved

Must show you the Ciate on the RH tomorrow. If I had a mortar and pestle (and indeed there ought to be such implements lurking somewhere close to hand) and some red glitter I could grind the glitter to fine particles, add them to the Ciate polish and voila! I'd have Paradoxal. Honestly.

Which colours (if any) do you find yourself subconsciously gravitating towards?

Rimmel 60 seconds Coralicious

That was an easy title....

The Orly yellow was...yellow. No, actually it wasn't. It was very green-leaning. So now that I have a yellow I can move on. It's not the greatest yellow but it's OK. I got one.

Had to go though. Aha, thought I, coral!!!
Now then - what is coral exactly? I wouldn't know it if I stubbed my toe on it anyway.
But what makes a coral polish coral?

If you get something called Coralicious you think you must be there or thereabouts. But what about that shades that aren't called Coral Delight, Coral Surprise or Don't forget to coral me.....?

Cor, I really like this. It goes well with the blue accent. 2 coats but I added a 3rd for some bizarre reason. No top coat on this. A really easy polish to work with. Not streaky.

I luuuuuuuuuuuurve the little, fat brush. Little and fat is good and I should know!!! The brush is a lot stubbier than it look on the cap.

I'm going to have to get some more in this range.

BUT I still don't know what coral is. I mean - this is orangey red. Yes?

One pic seems insufficient so..

Bullfinches from the bottom of our garden.
Do THEY have coral breasts?
Do you have any thoughts on coral?

Rimmel Green with Envy v The Edge Barcelona (dupes)

Here goes.
2 polishes that look alike in the bottle and even more so on the nail.

Bottle pix
The polish on the right looks slightly more green-leaning

On the hand

And...
This was becoming another big fat fail...
Both polishes went on well. 2 coats each was plenty.
The Rimmel was on index and little, The Edge on middle and ring
They looked fun, bright and deffo dupes.

Oh no!
As soon as I applied CG Freeze Dry to the Edge nails I got hideous warping and shrinkage. Up to the point it was the superior polish and would have been opaque with 1 careful coat.
What to do? I added GOSH Rainbow.
It shows its bronze-gold aspects in this context so I'm happy enough.
The weather is a bit dreary so this is a bright mani and cheering.
The Rimmel is a teeny bit brush-stroke-city but possibly less than I was expecting.
The Barcelona is a great polish but I'm going to avoid the Fast Freeze next time.

Until next time...
