Feeding the Green River

Feeding the Green River
©2012 Carolyn A Pappas, Feeding the Green River. Pen and watercolor wash, 13.5 x 10 cm.

This is not a nature sketch, but I thought you would all like to see it anyway, so I'm posting it here. I would have loved to sketch this on location if possible, but it was situated right on the edge of a steep dirt road next to a winding river. I did this from a photo I snapped after Hurricane Irene, when the river and streams were especially high.

I sent this small piece along to Norway, for the Twitter Art Exhibit which is raising money for charity. It is worth checking out.

Howick Falls - Maree

“A strong man and a waterfall always channel their own path.”

On my way down to Ballito on the North Coast of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, I often deviate at turn-offs to have a look at some of the note-worthy sites along the route. One of those is Howick Falls, situated on the Umgeni River, and which plunges 95 meters (310 feet) down a sheer rock face, into a beautiful rock pool at the bottom. According to local legend, the pool at the bottom of the falls is the residence of the Inkanyamba, a giant serpent-like creature. According to lore, only Sangomas can safely approach the falls and then only to offer prayers and other acts of worship to the inkanyamba, ancestral spirits and the 'Great God'. The Zulu people called the falls KwaNogqaza, which means "Place of the Tall One".

Sketchy watercolours-Concetta Flore

Yesterday WWF Italy  was celebrating "sanctuary day" and opening its sanctuaries  all over the country.
I was in Corchiano, near the Pian Sant'Angelo sanctuary.
Little time between walks, so here are the two watercolours I produced.
The first one was comfortably made under a dazzling sun, on a terrace overlooking a dramatic canyon created by the now modest river throughout the millennia.
The second one, on a tiny sketchbook, I made without  a pencil outline, directly in colours, by the sunlit waterfalls down below. Lovely colours and the play of shades and sun attracted me, along with the movement of the churning water.

Olifantsnek waterfall - Maree

“Romance often begins by a splashing waterfall and ends over a leaky sink!”
- Author unknown

Earlier this year I accompanied hubby to Rustenburg (South Africa), to view a vintage car he was thinking of buying and the scenery on the way to the owner's farm is absolutely spectacular, with the road meandering through the mountains. We passed this little waterfall and on the way back, we stopped so that I could photograph it. Alas, I left the camera at home! Next best thing (actually the best thing, I think!), out with my Moleskine and watercolour pencils, but no water! But I did manage to capture most of the shading and finished it off when we got home.

'Olifantsnek' is the name of the area we visited, and means "Elephant's Neck". There is also a large dam in the area which was established in 1928, but I can't seem to find any reference as to why it would be called "Elephant's Neck".

Water feature - Maree

Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul alike.
- John Muir (1838 - 1914)

Done in Moleskine Watercolour sketch-book 8" x 5.5"

We go for supper at the Magaliesburg Hotel regularly, sitting outside under the thatch next to this little water feature. I quickly captured this little pond and waterfall in between sips of my glass of wine and chatting to hubby, using my watercolour pencils and a glass of water the waiter accommodatingly supplied.

Waterfall...sketchcrawl...

Yesterday was a glorious day for a sketchcrawl, cool and overcast and marvelous to be with a few like-minded individuals. Painting moving water is always a challenge, but I was glad I gave it a shot. It was exciting!

I put a mini-video of the waterfall up on my Flickr--click HERE to see it.

Colorado Waterfall

Hey Friends,
I was going through some pictures and thought you might like this one. This was painted in Colorado about 10,000 ft. level. Summer before I came down ill. Going there is always a joy and I can't wait to be strong enough to hike up in there again. Of course it was beautiful but you know me ..... I became one with the site and then painted with whatever artistic license was called for to express it. I think every state has it's own special topography and it is all beautiful....maybe just different. Watercolor, plein air, 15"X 22". Finished some in studio due to drying at that altitude. Enjoy
