Meet the Correspondents--Intro-David G. Derrick Jr.

In my first post on cassowaries I neglected to introduce myself properly to the group. I am an artist in the Los Angeles area where I work at DreamWorks Feature Animation. In addition I am also a fine artist specializing in sculptures and drawings mainly of Wildlife.
Drawing is the beginning of everything for me. Whether it's a story board, a children's book or a sculpture or painting. My sculpture comes from drawing and observation. Drawing, I find, is the best way to explore different artistic possibilities quickly before you commit to wire and clay and ultimately bronze. Samburu Stretch and Meditation are sculptures that came directly from a sketches and memory. The Sketch for Samburu Stretch was done while I was on Safari in Kenya. With the information from the drawing and my memory of the moment I was able to make this sculpture.
Meditation was sculpted from drawings made while observing chimpanzees at the Los Angeles Zoo.
