Thyme and bees. Το θυμάρι και οι μέλισσες.

Thyme, (thymus vulgaris) is a common plant of Greece. Our rocky land and dry islands are ideal for its growth. No matter where it grows, it has always that characteristic strong perfume which attracts all kinds of insects when it is blooming, like this time of year. The bees love it and are its most common visitors. And they produce the best honey from its nectar.I took these photographs on the hills of Imittos, near Athens.

Σε όλους μας αρέσει νομίζω το δυνατό χαρακτηριστικό άρωμά του. Αλλά αρέσει πολύ και στις μέλισσες που από τα άνθη του μαζεύουν το καλύτερο μέλι. Οι φωτογραφίες είναι από τον Υμηττό, πάνω από την Βούλα.

We shall survive. Θα επιζήσουμε.

We are all going through a difficult period. Everything looks to be against us. But we are determined. We want to survive and we shall do it again. Like we have done it in the past. The way this tiny thyme bush is surviving on the rocky soil. Or the wild olive tree. And the wild orchid. Like all the plants surviving on the dry hills of Imittos near Athens. With almost no soil to and moisture to support them in the dry summer, they seem to be doing OK by themselves.

Όλοι περνούμε μια δύσκολη περίοδο. Τα πάντα φαίνονται να είναι εναντίον μας. Μα είμαστε αποφασισμένοι. Θέλουμε να επιζήσουμε και θα τα καταφέρουμε ξανά. Όπως τόχουμε κάνει και στο παρελθόν. Όπως τα καταφέρνει να επιζεί και να ξεπερνά τις δυσκολίες το θυμάρι που μοσχοβολά πάνω στα βράχια του Υμηττού. Όπως το κάνει η αγριελιά και η άγρια ορχιδέα που συνάντησα. Χωρίς καθόλου σχεδόν χώμα να τους προσφέρει λίγη υγρασία, στην ζέστη του καλοκαιριού, τα καταφέρνουν να επιζούν, σαν και τα υπόλοιπα φυτά, από μόνα τους.

When one is approaching the island of Kythera on boat, if the wind is favorable, can smell the perfumes of the place from long way. The island is covered by this beautiful and beautifully smelling bush which was in full bloom at this period with its tiny purple flowers. Thyme is growing everywhere on the island. And there are these never tired workers sucking off the nectar from those tiny flowers. And they produce the best quality and taste of honey. You can not find it anywhere else.

Όταν πλησιάζει το καράβι στο νησί των Κυθήρων, ο αέρας ευωδιάζει από τα αρώματα που έρχονται απο αυτό. Γιατί το νησί είναι καλυμένο παντού με αυτός τον όμορφο θάμνο που αυτήν την εποχή είναι λουλουδιασμένος. Το θυμάρι. Και ακούραστοι εργάτες, συλλέγουν ολημερίς το νέκταρ από τα μικροσκοπικά άνθη. Και παράγουν ένα μοναδικό προιόν. Το θυμαρίσιο μέλι των Κυθήρων, που στα αρώματα και την γεύση δεν έχει όμοιό του.
