Keep On Rockin' In The Free World

A sold-out crowd at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston was lucky enough to keep on rockin' in the free world last night for close to two hours with Neil Young and thanks to the kind largesse of my brother I was very happy to be among them as a guest in the Motosport Plus corporate box. I'd seen Young in Ottawa back in December, but the Kingston show felt more intimate in the smaller venue. Smaller venues are where Young is taking this tour. His next stops include London, Ontario, Sault Ste. Marie, Saskatoon, Kelowna and Lethbridge. Below are some shots I snapped, last night's set list and a review of the concert in today's local paper... Setlist: 1. When You Dance I Can Really Love 2. Johnny Magic 3. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere 4. Spirit Road 5. Pocahontas 6. Cortez The Killer 7. Cinnamon Girl 8. Mother Earth 9. Hit The Road 10. The Needle And The Damage Done 11. Light A Candle 12. Lost In Space 13. Heart Of Gold 14. Old Man 15. Like A Hurricane 16. Get Behind The Wheel ...

Hey, Hey, My, My

Neil Young proved last night that, indeed, rock and roll will never die. In fact, "Into the Black" was one of the highlites of the evening at Ottawa's Scotiabank Place. His spirited and energetic performance moved my wife to turn to me and say "I only hope you have that much energy when you're that age!"(I'm about 7 years south of Neil). After all, Neil's getting up there in dog years and, of course, he went through serious brain surgery a couple of years ago but you'd never know all that from last night's concert. Young and his group, including wife Peggi and veteran Young collaborators Ben Keith on slide and guitar and Rick Rosas on bass, were preceeded by Jeff Tweedy and Wilco who put in a fantastic set. Opening act Everest were good but unfortunately struggled against a poor sound system. Everest and Wilco put in sets of about a half hour each. The Old Man put everyone to shame playing non-stop for over 2 rock-out hours. Here's a ...

Coldplay

Last night Maryse and I took our semi-regular "let's relive our youth" trek to the Scotiabank Place and took in a Coldplay concert. They were excellent! Preceeded by a forgettable opening act (Stars, who Wikipedia refers to as "a Juno Award nominated Canadian indie pop band") Coldplay squeezed all their hits and some new stuff into about an hour and-a-half. We had fairly good seats, three rows up in the 200 level to the side of the stage. Not near enough for close-ups but I got some decent pics from my point and shoot camera. The band began at centre stage, used the aprons at either side of the stage throughout the concert, did a short acoustic set below us on the stage-left apron and -get this - ran to the far end of the arena where they performed two acoustic numbers in front of a level 100 box! All in all, a highly entertaining evening from Chris Martin and his band mates. Coldplay's website can be found here and their Wikipedia entry here. And here...
