The Peace of Wild Things

A good friend from days gone by
sent me a poem via FB messenger this morning.
You know,
there's nothing random about kindness ~
about thoughtfulness
or compassion.
I believe that when we give these pieces of ourselves ~
when we pour out our lives in the
consideration and care of those around us
{or those an ocean away!}
it matters.
It chips away at the darkness that can, at times,
seem to have a bolder, louder voice.
But no understanding gesture,
no matter how 'small,'
is ever without influence.
A moment can change,
some one's countenance can change,
a day - even a life - can change...

....or a friend can find the words to express what a fun afternoon walk
with a puppy really meant to her.
{Thanks Gillian}

The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

and I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

On a hot, hot, hot summer day....

.... I took my sweet grand-pupy for a walk.
It's fun to share my walking time with him.

It's good for him...and good for me!
This resevoir is close to his house, and was a feast of green on this sunny day.

My favorite nature find was this curly vine.
Looked like a random {backwards} question mark to me!

I would have loved to see the pond covered with clouds
instead of lily pads...
It was one of those still, clear days when pond reflections are at their best.

I would have also loved to see the fun a bunch of kids must have been having
before their ball was sent off to float among the lily pads!

Saturday

Saturday was a GOOD day...

There were horses,

and newly-discovered, very old horse stables,

and estate walls with big iron gates.

And there was a woodpecker!

It was a day filled with many RANDOM flower sightings...
Flowers in the air.

And flowers in the garden.

Very colorful flowers in the garden.

There were flowers on the bushes.

And flowers in the fields.
Acres and acres of wildflowers and fields.

So, what was the FUN part of Saturday you ask?

Well,
my son took the day off work to hang with his mom.
My choice.
Whatever we wanted to do.
So I took him to a new favorite spot
{Maudslay State Park, Newburyport, MA}
and we walked and talked for hours.

Yes,
Saturday was a very good day.

Imagine..

What is it about an abandoned property that is so enticing?

This spring I was wandering trough an old estate property that is now a state park about an hour north of me in Newburyport, MA. I stumbled upon this old, brick entrance that, I imagine, was gated at one point. What would it have looked like? Wrought iron? Left mostly open or closed? Used to keep children inside, or strangers out? I imagine a strong pair of hands putting up the now well worn fence. I picture gardening...a tender pruning of the bushes now growing wildly across the yard. And I hear children. The laughter and carefree banter of playing children.

As I wander with my camera, all sorts of stories float in and out of my consciousness. I meander through my thoughts of what this property has meant to others for, perhaps, generations....and then wonder what I would do with the place if I were ever to occupy this little slice of heaven. I'd sure keep lots of these beautiful orange blooms around to brighten the landscape. Orange could quickly be catching up with yellow for a shot at becoming my favorite color... But I digress.

This combination of a long walk out of doors and a mini mental vacation are, to me, the perfect recipe for a refreshing afternoon!

Behind the Lens

This guy.
Though he hates to sit still and pose for me,
he does it anyway.
We have a favorite place to visit together.
"My" pond.
At least I pretend it's his favorite too!

Best thing about it?
You never know what you're going to discover beyond the horizon.
The paths, woods and marshes behind the big pond are full of adventure.

Mr. Heron was waiting for us yesterday.
You've heard it said,
"Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes..."
Well,
with a photographer and a heron it's more like
"Don't shoot until you see the yellow of their eyes!"

There were several of them hanging close to the edges of the backwaters,
slowly,
carefully
stalking their lunch.

Because there were fish.
So. Many. Fish.
Never before have I seen fish this big in the pond!
There were tons of them splashing vigorously ~
making bubbles and attracting all sorts of fisherman.
Both heron and human!

No matter the day,
or the company,
or what I discover...

...there are few things that make me as happy
as being behind the lens in this place.

Portraits of Motherhood

Sunday was a beautiful day.
Hot.
Sunny.
A glorious day to wander.
So, wander I did.
I headed north to a beautiful state park - hoping to see pathways full of blooming rhododendrons.
Alas.
Less than 40 miles north, and very little was blooming.
I'll have to go back if I hope to catch the floral beauty of this park.

However,
as is often the case,
when I set out to find one thing,
it is something else entirely that moves my heart.
Yesterday it was the many images of motherhood that caught my eye.
So good to see the families ~ all shapes, sizes, ages and stages...
and all the fun they were sharing.

This mom was setting up a picnic for her two little boys...

This mom was left to nap under the shade tree while dad walked with the baby filled stroller....

This mom sat quietly while her teens explored the woods behind her...

This mom stood on the shore and watched her 'tween' wade in the water...

This mom celebrated with her 'village'....

This mom celebrated with her children and her mother....the generations gathered...

This mom waited for her little guy to take her hand...

This mom hiked with her clan....

And this mom, as we all do, waited for the straggling, littlest one to catch up to the rest of the family...

So many beautiful portraits of motherhood.

{Also..... in the completely random category... I found a smiling crocodile in a tree!!}

Walden Pond

"Live in each season as it passes;

breathe the air,

drink the drink,

taste the fruit,

and resign yourself to the influence of the earth."

Henry David Thoreau
Walden

Such a blessing to live so close to this
birthplace of exquisite reflection.
Our Sunday stroll,
sandwiched between hosting, meal planning,
curtain hanging and errands
was, indeed,
food for the soul.
