oh, those woods....

"I took a walk in the woods
and came out taller than the trees."
Henry David Thoreau

 {Middlesex Fells Reservation}

Fresh air, blue skies, green trees and glistening water...
walking through the tall trees
treading softly over the fallen pine needles
climbing up
exploring off the beaten path
the good elements of a summer weekend hike

One of my favorite things about wandering through the woods
is watching what catches the sunlight...
These bright green pine needles against the green water
was a favorite sight from yesterday.

And, just to keep us on our toes,
Mother Nature is reminding us that time keeps marching on.
There were a few random hints of autumn that caught our attention.

Of course,
it must be said,
that what keeps these hikes fun
is my husband.
He knows how to keep us moving
and keep the mood light...
even when the old knees and feet start wishing that the way back
could {miraculously} be shorter than the way out!

Sabbaday Falls

I've grown to love these little brown signs. I see the hikers and know that a pleasant journey is just ahead of me. Through the woods, beside a river...whatever nature has in store, whatever the season, I've learned that I won't be disappointed by all that there is to discover along the trail.

As we walked back down this trail last weekend, I noticed these small rocks that someone had balanced atop a larger boulder in the midst of the rushing water. I snapped a photo because I thought... this is how these walks make me feel. My feet take my body AND my soul on a journey when I hike. Not only am I physically strengthened and rewarded, but my inner self seems led out of the faster pace of a life rushing on by and towards peace and balance.

Truth be told, it's this inner journey that draws me back to the woods over and over again.

C'mon Boots, Let's Go!

"These boots are made for walking,
and that's just what they'll do...."

"Are you ready boots?
Start walking."
{Nancy Sinatra}

Mr. Thorough and Mrs. Can-We-Just-Be-Finished-Now walk into a store. It's time to buy the Mrs. some hiking boots. Looks like this hobby they've discovered as a couple is a keeper. And hiking in sneakers isn't cutting it anymore. She keeps trying on the different pairs and sizes he brings - trying not to show her impatience - knowing she'll end up with a better boot if she trusts Mr. Thorough. A choice and a purchase were made - and the new hiking boots were broken in this weekend in NH!

If you didn't guess, that's us. The mis-matched shopping couple. I ended up just tickled pink with my new hiking boots! What a treat to see the waterfalls, trails and ponds that we discovered this weekend... Not only were my new boots made for walking, but I think this soul of mine was made for walking too. It feels so good to be out and about sharing this fun with my husband after this extra-long winter we've had!

And in the completely random category....
My son was on the local news because the bar he manages was showing 'that' fight...
He's the one that got an ultra-close-up for his few seconds of fame!

Hangin' On!

Three months ago I wrote this post that was inspired by the lyrics to
Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.
I shared about a few things I learned climbing Smith Rock in central Oregon.
I also wrote this about that climb.
I shared about what a milestone moment that was for me -
the accomplishment of a goal that had long been a dream.

Well, yesterday I climbed another mountain.
This climb was a bit higher.
The trail was just a bit longer.
And getting to "the top"
{we didn't make it all the way to the summit - but almost!}
was both beautiful and inspiring.

HOWEVER...
the trails that we took were
SO MUCH HARDER
than anything I'd ever attempted before!
Very rocky.
Full of leaves...often slippery leaves...
and a fair bit of mud and water.
As we were climbing,
I kept repeating to myself,
"I know this is good for me...I know this is good for me."
I grabbed hold of any random root, or tree branch or solid rock that might help to pull me up.
On the way down those same roots acted as footholds
and the trees were there to lean on so I wouldn't slip or fall.
I was as moody as the overcast day,
and had to really fight to just keep moving forward.
A day that began as a fun-fall-bucket-list kind of day
asked so much more of me than I had anticipated.

I'm about six months into a wellness journey.
A journey that has been filled with victory, beauty and inspiration.
I've even inspired myself once or twice!
But it is just that.
A journey.
It's not a destination, or a summit or a short-term fix for what ails me.
It's a life long journey.
And I "get that" now in ways I never have before.
As I made my way down the mountain,
I smiled
{yes, there was some smiling!}
as I leaned into a sturdy tree.
Or slid on my bum down the side of a steep rock.
Or handed my husband my camera bag to put in his backpack.
Or reached out to take his hand as he helped me navigate our descent.
Yes...
the inside-of-my-heart smile grew larger
as each muscle and joint grew more and more tired.

Though this journey is mine.
All mine.
Of my choosing and by my will...
though this journey is
MINE
one thing is crystal clear.
I am not alone.
I have the support of a fantastic group of health care professionals.
I have the encouragement of family and friends.
And I have the hand of my
patient
steady
sure-footed
rock
of a husband.
Always there to keep me going.

Although yesterday was very different and much harder than I had anticipated,
I'm still going to file it as wonderful.

"Oh, it's such a perfect day
I'm glad I spent it with you
Oh such a perfect day
You just keep me hanging on
You just keep me hanging on"
Lou Reed

Hunting for Magic

This weekend I made some
and it sure was delicious!
As I take step after step towards wellness,
I'm really enjoying the discovery of all sorts of new food!
This is dairy free, gluten free and made with Super Foods,
so it's not only good and yummy
but exceptionally nutritious!!

On my walk this Sunday,
Mr, Squirrel stopped what he was doing
and posed -
yes he just hung out there and posed -
for a photo!
"Wildlife" doesn't usually cooperate with me for photos,
so I thoroughly enjoyed this random occurrence.

The real fun of my week?
Moss!!
Yes, I know...
you're jealous of my thrill-a-moment life.

But just look at this dewy moss!
The last couple of weeks,
as I've wandered the woods,
where the fading leaves and pine needles are falling,
I can't help but notice the vibrant green moss that's catching those fallen leaves.
I've begun to wonder if there are fairies or little leprechauns
living in this new growth!

I haven't seen any yet...

...but I'm having fun searching for them!

The country boy and the city girl go for a hike....

"I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you"
Cyndi Lauper

He's brown hiking boots.
I'm pink laces.
He climbs the rocks.
I seek out leafy paths and beds of pine needles.
He's sure footed.
I'm unsteady as we climb.
He studies the trail map, has a great sense of direction and keeps us on course.
I just work on keeping up. And breathing.
He doesn't miss the forest for the trees.

Me? I'm busy pointing out how one little branch has managed to catch a pine needle.

Sure, I slow him down...and his need to know what direction we're facing baffles me.
But walking together ~
through the ups and downs, over the rocky parts and the soft ground ~
brings out the best in both of us.

I see his true colors shining though...
And I love that.
