Tuesdays Are For Knitting

Some signs of spring!  Melting snow, a baby chick and an open door :-).

Pinot being outside is not a sign of spring because he's been going out all winter, but his muddy feet could be a clue :-).

I couldn't resist making my Emotional Support Chicken her own baby chick.  These are fun little projects and a great way to use up small amounts of leftover yarn.  Here's a link to the patterns.

Merry Christmas!

Every now and then I catch a little glimpse of white out in the field or a flash of orange in the garden and I hope we are all still here together under Hank and Maisie's watchful eyes, the bright stars and occasionally the northern lights.  I wonder if Maggie and Big Moose see them, too.

*  *  *  *  *

I couldn't fit every beloved ghost in the scene, but ghosts are fluid and other than Hank and Maisie watching out back and Salt and Comby out front, everyone else can be whoever we are missing the most and catch out of the corner of our eye.  Remember, they might be tucked in the barn or curled up in the Wool House.

I'd love to know who you see.

Merry Christmas!

Oh, and it's a puzzle too :-).

Snow Bunny

Pinot was pretty sure he wanted to go out to the barn for a bit Tuesday morning, but he didn't go far before he turned back and decided to shop local in his patio by the Wool House.

Look at the snow fly.

He knows it's important to eat your greens.

And your browns.

I've had a couple of questions about if Pinot is cold when he goes outside or if he's grown extra hair for winter.  If you click to biggify this picture you can see how dense his hair is.  I've also noticed he's put on some extra weight and has a fat pooch around his neck now.

When I think it's okay for him to run around for a bit, I leave the door cracked open so he can get back in when he's ready.  That being said, when it's really too cold to leave the door open very long, I don't let him go outside.  That's my work room, too :-).

November

Usually putting the month end compilation together reminds me that no matter how bad the month might have felt, there was actually a lot of good.  This month it reminded me what a crap fest the first 8 days were.

Do not be alarmed at the screen shot that will draw your eye to "deleting your blog".  It was actually the last line about "suicide prevention" that I was, sadly, not surprised to see on a suggested topics list.  The problem wasn't a blog issue, but it might have ruined the blog if it couldn't be fixed.  All is well now, thankfully.

As always, as I scrolled through pictures and videos, I was reminded of some beautiful sunrises, moonlight, flowers and bees surviving the extreme cold, sweet sheep, friends and cookie parties.  And somehow I'd forgotten about the Northern Lights.  Who on earth forgets about something like that!

I'm glad I have these compilations.

Are You Ready To Hug Some Sheep?

(Inter)National Hug a Sheep Day is this Saturday, October 25th (always the last Saturday in October), and we are planning our usual shenanigans here on the farm and virtually on Instagram.

We'll start the day with an early morning virtual Flock Walk on Instagram.  I've done these for several years now and each time I think it's going to be boring and silly and they always turn out really special.  I'll try to save the live video to publish other places so everyone can enjoy walking out with the sheep at a more reasonable time if you live elsewhere ;-).

In the afternoon we are hosting our usual On the Farm Party complete with sheep, horses, chickens, cats, Bea and Pinot.  It's looking like it's going to be cool enough for wool wearing, so that's exciting.  It may be too cool for wool spinning, but bring your wheel or current project just in case.  We'll have a fire going!

Since we are bumping up the time an hour this year, Auntie Reg is going to be cooking up our favorite October wool festival snack, Artichoke French, and we'll have fresh bread, hot coffee, cider, pumpkin donuts...

The sheep are hoping you'll bring lots of cookies and crackers.  Gato will eat most anything too and he's heard some stories about Hug a Sheep/Feed a Pony day and is looking forward to his first farm party ;-).  Pinot loves treats too, but rabbits really shouldn't have many treats, so don't let him trick you.

We have changed the time a little so that anyone who'd like to go over the Don and Rebecca Saager's fall train run afterwards can caravan over there from here.  It's a bit of a drive (40 minutes), but well worth the trip.

As always, there is no admission and everyone is welcome here.  I know I'm late getting this posted, but most of the "regulars" know the drill and if you would like to come in from out of town and need some accommodation suggestions or travel direction, just drop me an email.

Are you ready to hug some sheep?  Or a ball of yarn or a squishy warm wool sweater or blanket?  :-D

July

July...was brutal.  So incredibly hot and humid.  Demoralizing.  I did manage to spend about 36 hours up north for a wedding...and that made it almost worse.  Worse in a  "need to buy a lottery ticket" way.  And yet, watching these photo flash by, there was a little good mixed in...but I can say it was better watching it than living it.

Hey, Pinot

It looks like you've been exploring in the barn again!

"Yeah, maybe.  How'd you know?"

It's not a puzzle.  Look at your messy face!

This picture does make a fun puzzle though.  Enjoy!

Pinot loves his outdoor run around time and is currently obsessed with exploring the barn.  He still briefly checks in with some of his garden haunts, but I think he likes visiting the sheep and he loves to climb on the lower hay bales.

Zen And The Art Of Spinning Wheel Maintenance

The first thing I tell someone who's having trouble with their spinning wheel or weaving loom is that while these tools are definitely specialized, they are at heart, basic tools, and when they aren't functioning well, probably just need something adjusted or simply fixed...

...and then I spend Two Weeks of the Tour de Fleece fighting with my own wheel, not having the most fun, whining about the trouble I'm having, stressing that I need to start saving for a new wheel...

Luckily our small, but mighty Ravelry group is full of experienced and helpful spinners...who still had to suggest to me twice that maybe my drive band was just slipping, and sure enough, five minutes later I am back to spinning with a well working wheel.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Sigh...

This is an odd picture, but I was working with blazing too hot, too bright sun and this spot in the shade worked perfectly for a yarn shot.  Neither the wheel or Bea are in prison.  They are both just trying to stay cool.  The fence is for Pinot...who is enjoying the AC in the wash room.

Love this light silver and it's so soft, lightly spun and fluffy - Sara yarn - and I think I might just go ahead and spin the rest of what I have left of his roving and make a souvenir from one of the sweetest sheep ever.

This is what a touch of Cotswold will do for your yarn.  Drape a shawl would die for :-).

This picture just struck me funny.  Do you see two eyes, a silver wig and my poor downtrodden wheel sticking her tongue out at me?

I probably need to go sit in the AC with Pinot ;-).

Pinot's Porch

So glad it's at least a little cooler this morning.  I've regretted every complaint I made about being cold last winter.

Looking for a new puzzle?  I think this one might be fun :-).

And May...

Much of May was second verse, same as the first.  Pinot was still digging his hole and filling it back in.  Bullseye kept getting friendlier and friendlier - just a charming young cat.  More rain.  More green grass and also a special mix of grass planted out front for Pinot.

The cake baking continued.

Short Round made it all the way out into the yard to graze a few evenings.  Maisie grazed in the driveway.  Baaxter had been kicked out into Summer Breezy because he was being a bully.  Boys...

The cicadas arrived and that's been...interesting.  I can stand the mess and the noise, but fer cryin' out loud, get off me while I'm trying to weed eat!

There's a funny story about poison ivy and Short Round getting some props for helping support the removal at a friends house...by goats.  Since Short Round will eat anything, I figured she should be there in spirit :-).

Betsy enjoyed another party.  Bea enjoyed a trip to Dairy Queen.  Everyone enjoyed the beautiful full moon.

The gardens are coming along, both vegetable and B Garden.

The horse shenanigans continued.  Boys...

Knitting as fast as I could to get. this. project. finished.  My Iknitariders had fun riding along and didn't mind too much when Bullseye fell asleep with them.

Maisie is a Good Sheep.

Losing Burrnie and Kaala was not unexpected, but still sad.  I love the barn camera shot of her sleeping tucked up with Liddy near the end.  Kaala enjoyed her friends here.  So did Burrnie.

Speaking of the barn camera, I love being able to check in with everyone whenever I want, but also, if I see something odd I can go back and see what happened.  One evening I saw the sheep all jump up startled.  I switched to the barn lot camera to try to see what they were looking at.  Something small and light colored, but I never could decided exactly who it was.

The month ended with a fun steam train ride at the Heavenly Hilltop Railroad with 20 and Pip and Skipper (Rebecca's lamb), who is now far too big to pick up.

I love these scrapbook compilations :-).
