Welcome To Electronic Sound

As you’ve probably worked out from the big numbers on the cover, we are rewinding back to 1981 for this month’s lead feature. We’ve been working on it for a while, ever since we first got wind of ‘Moving Away From The Pulsebeat: Post-Punk Britain 1977-1981’, a five-CD boxset on Cherry Red. It came out at the end of March, so you’ll find it in the shops now. It’s jam-packed with gems and the choice of tracks – 105 of them in total – sparked a lot of discussion in the Electronic Sound. Especially the selections for 1981, the end point for the collection.

Two years after Margaret Thatcher became prime minister and four years out from the heyday of punk, 1981 was a year of tremendous tension in the UK – politically, socially and culturally. Many of the country’s inner cities experienced a large-scale rioting in April and July, with pitched battles between angry youths and the police on the streets of London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and elsewhere. Still, who cared about things like high unemployment, poor housing and systemic racism? Not when there was the pomp and glitz of Charles and Diana’s wedding to enjoy on the telly.

When it came to music, one of the talking points of 1981 was the ever-increasing number of synthpop bands breaking into the UK mainstream charts, many of them climbing to the dizzying heights of the Top 10. At the same time, though, there was a dramatic surge in new independent talent, with the post-punk, industrial, goth rock, electro-dub, jangly pop, agit-prop, avant-jazz, mutant disco and so many more – and artists putting out their records on both established indies and previously unknown labels.

It all added up to an epic year for electronic, groovy, experimental and just plain brilliant music – whichever tribe you belonged to – and we’re telling the story of 1981 through 101 milestone releases, both singles and albums (and a couple of tapes). We think we’ve done a pretty good job but, as is the nature of these beasts, we’ll no doubt have neglected to include one or two of your favourites. At which point, we’d like to apologise to long-time ES reader Al Hine of Kirkwall for leaving The Flying Lizards’ ‘Fourth Wall’ album off the final list, although we hope he’ll be pleased to see Vivien Goldman in there. Talk to you on the socials soon, Al.

We have some fantastic interviews elsewhere in the issue too, including Electribe 101 singer Billie Ray Martin, I Monster men Dean Honer and Jarrod Gosling, and avant-garde pioneer Dorothy Moskowitz, Man Parrish gives us the inside skinny on ‘Hip Hop, Be Bop (Don’t Stop), Saint Etienne Bob Stanley mulls over his influences, and cartoonist Savage Pencil walks us through his cover art for The Fall’s ‘Lie Dream Of A Casino Soul’. Which, by the way, is the first track on ‘Avant 81’, the seven-inch EP we’re bundling with the magazine this month. You’ve got your copy of that, right? Turn to page 6 if you haven’t!

WELCOME TO ELECTRONIC SOUND

What a total treat it is to have Blancmange main man Neil Arthur on the cover of this month’s Electronic Sound, albeit a slightly dotty version of him. Can you see what we did there?

As one of the exemplar electronic duos of the early 1980s, Blancmange snuck cool and arty pop into charts thanks to Neil Arthur’s skewed lyrics, Stephen Luscombe’s memorable keyboard lines, and some fine record sleeves. The supremely catchy ‘Living On The Ceiling’ gave the pair their defining hit and was followed by a long string of UK Top 40 singles over the next two or three years. They departed gracefully in 1986 after just three albums, two of them certified as gold discs. And that, it seemed, was that.

Fast forward to 2011 and Blancmange were back. ‘Blanc Burn’, the title a play on Blackburn, a couple of miles along the road from Neil’s home town, marked the beginning of a new era so prolific that it´s been hard to keep up. In the last 11 years, there have been no less than 13 Blancmange albums, plus three more from Fader, Neil’s side project with synthmeister Benge, who is also now the other half of the main pudding. Stephen Luscombe have sadly stood aside due to an ongoing health issue. It’s a track record that threatens to put the Fall in the shade. In fact, you might even think of Neil as a benign synthpop Mark E Smith, a wordsmith whose inventive lyrics have long set the band apart.

The purple patch shows no sign of tailing off, with the group back on London Records, the label that paved the way to their initial success. Their new album, ‘Private View’, is a corker, a glorious example of left-field synthpop that’s up there with those early gold discs. It´s aas at home on a daytime radio as it is on the shelf of the most ardent Minimal Wave collector, but then that’s where Blancmange have always been. And as well as making great records, Neil Arthur gives fabulous interviews, skipping between subjects, telling endless anecdotes, offering interesting opinions, and all without missing a beat. He is as our writer Bob Fischer says, a master at joining the dots. Hence this month’s cover image.

We have loads more interviews this month – Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Unloved, Pye Corner Audio, Jockstrap, Paul Oakenfold, Laraaji and more – plus we also have some exciting news for those of you who enjoy a bit of digital entertainment as well as nice-smelling print magazines. We’ve just revamped our website, which will now feature a growing archive of articles from back issues of the mag and regular live sessions filmed and recorded exclusively by Electronic Sound. Get yourself over to electronicsound.co.uk and take a look.

Electronically yours,

Push and Mark
