THE WERRA FOXMA MAGAZINE.

ISSUE 4.

Hello everyone,

Welcome to issue 4! Well, me made it to end the year, through all of life’s ups and downs. It’s been as eventful a year as we could have hoped for. Not everything went our way, but life isn’t a straight path, and some curveballs were served up and dealt with, alongside some spectacular hight points

Issue 4 is another feature packed affair, and starting from now, I have some help putting the magazine together. Enter Michael Stanton and Rick Flynn! Michael will handle some of the main features for us, and Rick is going lo look after quarterly reviews, highlighting the best releases from our indie electronic scene.

We put Michael and Rick straight to work this issue. Rick presents his 10 favourite albums of 2022 (plus honourable mentions), and Michael digs into the state of the indie electronic scene, and looks at some of the highlights of 2022, plus a lovely article on often-overlooked Edinburgh duo, Yimino.

The recent Castles in Space Levitation ’22 and WFR North Plan B are reviewed, as well as bringing you the line up for our latest festival, WFR NorthWest, help in Lancaster next March, with a massive lineup including Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan, Sulk Rooms, Elizabeth Crompton and many more.

The first full year of the WFR SubClub is in the books, and what a fisrt year we have had! The year is completed with a trio of incredible albums from names familiar to everyone, including Autumna, Mike K Smith, and Sulk Rooms.

Our 3 artist features come from across the Atlantic. The next two albums on the label are covered in depth, including this issue’s cover artist, Bendu, and his hypnotic new LP, Portaling. We also chat to Burial Grid, as we find out about his new album, Music for No Tomorrow. We also take a trip through the studio of Survey Channel, ahead of next year’s LP, Canvas Doubles.

And finally, we let you look at some of the releases to look forward to from the WFR 2023 roster. We are incredibly proud of the lineup that’s taken from over the last few months, and we can’t wait to share some more amazing music with you next year.

Enjoy, and take care,

Fra

WELCOME TO ISSUE 3 OF THE WERRA FOXMA MAGAZINE

Hello everyone,

Issue 3 is finally here!

Man o man, we have a lot to cover in this issue. So much so, we had to increase the size of the magazine to accommodate everything.

The first thing you probably noticed… a cover CD? Damn right! In the spirit of bringing you as much value to magazine as possible, we recruited the services of three WFR artists: Cholly, Letters From Mouse and Sulk Rooms to bring their amazing live and improvisational sounds to ‘One Shot’, a CD of long-form performances recorded live, with every nuance and element being triggered and performed on the fly.

Talking about live, we thought it important to look back of some of the fun live experiences of the summer, especially Emotion Wave’s ‘A Day In The Sun’ festival in Liverpool, and our first live stream festival, Foxfest. Massive thanks to everyone who took part in these awesome happenings. These two events led to the creation of ‘WFR North’, our first brick and mortar festival, coming to Edinburgh on 22 October. More information on WFR North on page 6.

Our cover artist for this issue is the amazing Elizabeth Crompton. Her forthcoming album, Problems Of Other Minds, is an absolute triumph. Deep, emotional, and stunning from beginning to end. It sees WFR entering uncharted territory – an electronic album with vocals. Everyone at the label is seriously excited for this one, and we are in no doubt you will embrace it as much as we have.

The same goes for Viewers, the new Sulk Rooms LP from the one and only Thomas Ragsdale, and we roll out the full release plan for Dohnavùr, which covers multiple reissues, remixes, and releases which have come home to roost.

It’s another stellar period of albums from the SubClub, with The Metamorph, Letters From Mouse and Gribbles enchanting us with three fresh new LPs of enduring quality.

Our artist for this issue’s ‘The Process’ is the guru of generative electronic music, Glasgow’s Mike K Smith. We hope you enjoy his Ableton-centric approach to random sound, and how rewarding the process can be. We also shine a light on the first 5 independent record stores to stock our records. We have already added more into the pipeline, but more about that in the next magazine.

Lastly, it’s with great excitement to announce that, starting from issue 4, we welcome the journalistic expertise of Michael Stanton to the WFR magazine. I’ve been winging it on my own since the start of this journey with the magazine, and I’m fast running out of adjectives to describe our amazing artists and music. So it’s with a mixture of relief and excitement that I have someone with 20 years of music journalism experience to share the load with. Mike, welcome to the team.

Enjoy this issue.

WERRA FOXMA - (fanzine | issue #2)

Excelente!

Aqui fica a apresentação do número 2.

WELCOME TO THE SECOND WERRA FOXMA MAGAZINE.

Hello everyone.

Welcome to issue 2! Thank you to everyone who picked up our introductory issue, whether it was a standalone purchase or as part of the SubClub. We have had some lovely feedback from some of you amazing people; please keep your comments coming in. Remember, we want feedback on how we can improve things for you going forward, so don’t be shy on the comms – all feedback is welcome.

There’s loads to cover in issue 2. Our cover artist this time round is the amazing Salvatore Mercatante, and we pick his brains on his rich electronic music background, and also dive into SM Synthesis, his upcoming album on WFR, due out in the spring.

We bring you exciting details about FoxFest our inaugural online festival featuring live streaming performances from artists on the WFR roster and beyond. Proceeds from FoxFest will be donated to help the Ukrainian Crisis, and will build on the funds raised by our action of Scanner’s La Fenêtre Magique test pressing. The lineup is exceptional, and features live sets from Dohnavùr, Scanner, Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan, Thomas Ragsdale, Eonlake, Letters From Mouse and more.

We hope you have enjoyed the first 3 SubClub albums! WE were served up a trio of amazing LP’s from Chris Prine, Glinca and Fields of Few. Again, the feedback from these releases was extremely positive. In This issue, we give you the lowdown on the next set of albums for the SubClub. As we transition from spring into summer, we introduce Greece’s Onepointwo, the UK’s Synthetic Villains, and Missouri’s Oceanographer. We hope you enjoy these offerings as much as you enjoyed the first set of SubClub releases. We absolutely love them!

This issue also brings a host of new multi-page artist features, Electronic Music Open Mic founder Martin Christie shares his thoughts on the thriving EMOM scene, Manchester’s Apta lifts the lid on an epic last 12 months, including reflecting on his amazing Echoes LP, and West Lothian supergroup Raven Musen (consisting of Letters From Mouse and yours truly) walk you through our new album, Peppermint Soldier, track by track.

We are also grateful for a peek underneath the hood of the creative processes of two incredible artists: Elizabeth Crompton and Thomas Ragsdale, who share some equipment and production techniques that help them shape their unique and beguiling sounds. By way of lookahead, both Elizabeth and Thomas will have extensive features in issue 3 as we prepare for their forthcoming albums on WFR. And we are also grateful to Steve Hadfield for providing analysis on some of his favourite albums in his collection.

We also thought that it was worth sharing some of the social media comments, and pictures of you proudly showing off your Werra Foxma releases. Every time you do this, it makes our hearts sing, and we appreciate your Willingness to spread the good word about your additions to your collection.

Enjoy, and take care,

Fra
