Jon Hassell'Sketches of the Mediterranean - Evanescence (ECM session 4) (2013)

Il trombettista e compositore statunitense Jon Hassell è il visionario creatore di uno stile musicale che egli stesso definisce Forth World music, un misterioso, unico ibrido sonoro tra musica antica e suoni digitali, tra scrittura e improvvisazione, tra influenze occidentali e orientali. Hassell fa la sua apparizione sulla scena internazionale nel 1977 quando pubblica Vernal Equinox, ma alle spalle ha già una carriera ad alto livello nella musica contemporanea. Aveva studiato per un paio di anni da Stockhausen a Colonia, aveva suonato nel mitico In C di Terry Riley, aveva collaborato con il Theatre of Eternal Music di La Monte Young. E un momento decisivo era stato l’incontro con il maestro di canto indiano Pandit Pran Nath con il quale aveva studiato e suonato per un paio di anni. Hassell applicherà le tecniche del canto indiano alla tromba e da lì uscirà il sound e il fraseggiare unico del suo strumento.

Nelle ultime tre decadi i dischi di Jon Hassell hanno ispirato un’intera generazione di musicisti quali Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, il Kronos Quartet o Ry Cooder. E’ stato ospite con le sue performances alla tromba in dischi di musicisti così diversi quali Ibrahim Ferrer, Baaba Maal o Björk. Tra le sue musiche per film o di scena ricordiamo quelle per Wim Wenders, per il Netherlands Dance Theater o per il regista teatrale Peter Sellars. La nuova generazione di trombettisti europei quali Arve Henriksen, Paolo Fresu, Erik Truffaz, Nils Petter Molvar ha riconosciuto, accanto a quella di Miles, la grande influenza esercitata da Hassell sullo sviluppo contemporaneo dello strumento.

Tra le ultime uscite del musicista ricordiamo la band Maarifa Street e nel 2009 il nuovo disco per ECM Last Night the Moon Came, a tanti anni di distanza dal precedete per l’etichetta di Monaco.

“L'intensità con cui Miles Davis ricordava un sogno che aveva fatto a proposito di Gil Evans subito dopo la sua scomparsa è diventato un punto di riferimento per l’idea di questo progetto. Ho iniziato a immaginare come avrebbe potuto suonare la musica di quel sogno. Prima che quest’idea mi venisse avevo già il titolo “Sketches of Mediterranean” che mi ronzava in testa, sia in riferimento alla famosa collaborazione fra Gil e Miles “Sketches of Spain”, sia per la posizione di Roccella Ionica e del suo festival - che mi aveva commissionato il lavoro - proprio vicino alla punta più meridionale dell’Italia, nel cuore del Mediterraneo e ad una sola ora di volo dall’Algeria. Mi piaceva l'idea di un arco tematico da dare al concerto, l’impressione di questo possibile gioco di andata e ritorno tra i due poli tematici. C’è così tanto da esplorare in questo senso e considero questo progetto molto più un work-in-progress che un lavoro ormai compiuto”.
