Carlos Alberto "Katchas" Martins - Broda (Funana pioneer and Bulimundo mentor, 1977)

(DMC 111-101).

One aspect I could not guess when I begun Muzzicaltrips blog, is the number of people around the world it would lead me to meet or to exchange with.  Today's post comes from one of theses interesting exchanges, as it's a contribution from Norway, proposed by Olav Aalberg, great connoisseur of music from Cabo Verde.

Luis Morais em La Bonanza - La Murga Panamero (Cumbia de Cabo Verde, 70s)

(Morabeza Records 6810 254).

Cabo Verde being on the road between Africa and the Caribbean, latin covers regularly appear. This Luis Morais LP includes a murga (credited to W. Calon and H. Lavon!), a cumbia (Lisandro Meza) and some other tropical rhythms.

Johnny and Orquesta Rodrigues - African Woman / Lady (Fela Kuti cover, 1974)

(negram NR-110).

Here's another Fela Kuti afrobeat cover, from an artist I initially thought was from Suriname, but i finally discovered he was from Cabo Verde. This country being a portuguese colony, Johnny Rodrigues was supposed to serve in portuguese army to fight Angola independence movement, but he could avoid it flying to the US with his family, and then lived in Netherland during the mid 70s.

Abel Lima e Les Sofas cantam Nos Bida (Afrofunk form Cabo Verde, 1977)

Abel Lima is a singer from Cabo Verde islands, forced to clandestine imigration by boat at age of 13 to escape the totalitarian regime.
