Back with the Bakes

Vacation is over! Felt like it was just a dream. Time does fly! :P

I'm back with a couple new cakes, but still can't catch up with my mini-clay play schedule.
Also have some new boxes which need to be filled. Whom to complain to? I need 48 hours a day! lol

Both my Etsy and Dawanda shops are back on active again. Please pay them a visit or two. :)

Wish you all a great day!
Rachel :)

Spring Has Sprung

After all... :)

And this year my first spring cake is a fairy's early spring garden with butterflies. The cake sit on a green 'lawn' and flowers are blooming all around. You can see soil and the melting snow. *whisper - have a closer look...* ;)

Oh well, I'm in my 'fairytale' mood. :)

Christmas! Get set! Go!

Are you ready?

Christmas is coming. I was waiting for Santa the whole childhood life and still waiting. My favorite reindeer is Rudolf. Don't ask me why, I guessed it was just love at first sight. I even have Rudolf a reindeer doll myself. ;)

I just finished making a chocolate Christmas Poinsettia cake (the one above) and kinda like it. Time flies, time flies...

Air Dry Clay Cakes...

After my breads and buns obsession session I'm now back on my regular 'self' again. :D

Today I'd a couple cake done. Working with ADC 'done' means that they are now sitting and drying. lol Often that I wish I'm working with PC and once I'm finish making a cake, it's ready to be displayed. But who is in a hurry? ;)

I think I'm at the edge of mini-making for this period, I'm turning 'blank' and have no idea what to make next. It's time (again)... Gonna put the clay aside and try something else new in between. I used to do paper craft, knitting, crochet, tried some wood works. lol Nothing success though, but it's always good to try something else from time to time. Who knows I could turn to be a knitting or crochet master some day... ;) hehehehe

Flower, Flower, Flower...

Making miniature cake is fun and relax (no, I don't say I'm addicted! ;)). There are variety in both size and color and that you can 'play' with flower cake. :D

I had a look at photos of my previous mini-cake and found out that half (or more) of the minis I made were flower cakes. They are in different color, style and shape. When I start making them, most of the time I have no 'design' in my head. I just 'go with the flow'.

It's also fun making cake body. My regular cake body is a simple circle piece of clay or for sliced one is layered clay. How many way can we make our cake body different? Have to think about that and try something new. ;)

Why Do I Love You So...

Oooo - Oooo - Oooo - Oooo.......

My darlin' I have often thought of things we used to do
And now I sit and wonder why you're gone and left me blue
You said you'd never leave me
You said you'd never go

Oh my darlin', why do I love you so
Oh my darlin', why do I love you so

Oooo - Oooo - Oooo - Oooo.......

Is it because you stroked my hair
When you were by my side
Or is it because of the tears you cried
When your little puppy died
You said you'd never leave me
You said you'd never go

Oh my darlin', why do I love you so
Oh my darlin', why do I love you so

Oooo - Oooo - Oooo - Oooo.......

Why do I love you so...

Making Mini mini-cake

After weeks of busy schedule I'm back to my normal evening cake making. 5 new cakes are in their process to be ready to displayed in a couple days. :D

Making white cake is complicate, not because of any other reason but because of the white color that can be altered and disturbed by foreign materials around. It's difficult to keep white clay white. Even cloth you wear can make your white clay dirty (but, I have to admit that white cake looks nice).
I'm also preparing 2 more of quarter scale cakes, problem is I would like one of them a flower-cake and couldn't sit down and make small enough flowers for the cake! I need a small hand day, a VERY small hand day...

My First 1:48th Scale Cake!

After years of making 1:12th, 1:24th and some 1:6th scale cakes now, it's time for 1:48th.

I gave it a try last weekend and found out the complications of making such a tiny cake. I made a chocolate layered cake covered with white cream and decorated with tiny strawberries. It came out not so bad for the first try. LOL The cake diameter is just ~1/4" (~6.5 mm). Isn't it small enough? However, I made a calculation. Diameter for quarter scale cake supposed to be around 3/16" (~5 mm max.). Argggggggg!

Anyway…I already prepared for a second one! :D

Chocolate Cake

I've been making quite a few different miniature chocolate cakes, dark chocolate cake, milk chocolate cake decorated with colorful flowers, fresh and juicy strawberries, or just with chocolate sheets, chocolate roses, etc.. Most of them came out in good shape with nice look. I'm not sure if this is because of my personal favor on chocolate that makes me like most of them - thinking about one I don't like, I couldn't figure it out though... lol

I also tried making miniature chocolate marble cake - sponge cake. It came out with nice color combination. The only problem is that due to the marble pattern of the cake, it's quite difficult to do any real decoration on the cake. Decoration can be interfered or could interfered the marble pattern and the cake could come out with messy toppings/decoration instead of a yummy, good looking cake. The marble cake will be excellent with cream coating, with marble sponge inside and frosting/cream coating outside then, you can decorate or add toppings and the sliced piece will come out in good shape with beautiful marble pattern of the sponge inside.

Does chocolate has any special meaning? I know flowers have, but what about chocolate?

New 1:12th Scale Cakes!

I managed to finish these cakes just last weekend. One 'classy' look (to me) is the yellow dome shaped cake. The cake is topped with purple roses and decorated with purple and orange morning glory flowers. It reminds me to a beautiful pale yellow fabric with beautiful, tiny flowers I saw somewhere in the past...

I've been busy lately and did not do much on cakes and mini-stuff. Anyway, I plan to try a 1/4" scale cake on this coming weekend. There are things I would like to try out but, so little time to do (or it's that I'm too lazy?). lol

Fresh From My Kitchen!

I just finished these cakes. They are an order with style selected from my Flickr album.

In general, I spend around 2 weeks on making cake from air dry polymer clay for overall process and to let the clay dry completely.

These cakes are in 1:12th scale. The wedding cake has 1" (~25 mm) diameter at the widest point while the 1-tier cakes have ~3/4" (20 mm) diameter.

I found out that some collectors have slightly bigger diameter cake collection (1" - 1 3/16" or ~25-30 mm diameter) while the other would like to have their cake diameter at ~3/4" (18-22 mm)...

Tools Needed for Miniature Cake Making

My half scale cake bodies (the clay) were mainly cut out to shape used color pen's cap (which is bigger than regular pen's cap) - no other mold, cutting tool or cookie cutter. So, the thicker clay layer made out nice dome shaped body. For heart shape and square shape cutters, I used metal strip from plastic food wrapping package and bend it into shape, not a perfect curve, but it works! The most time-consume part is pearl making, I roll small portion of clay into tiny ball. It's not that easy (for me) to make similar size tiny balls. And so, before I get enough pearl to decorate a cake, my fingers hurt!

It's amazing that every time I start
making new cake, new idea just pop up into my head what around me to be used and so far, I do not need any special tool to make my mini-cake at all.

Now, just have a look around and try to figure out how could things you found can be used for your miniature. ;)

My Very First Miniature Cakes

I really have no real idea why I started making my very first miniature cakes as 3-tier wedding cakes which, seen from now, is more complicate than 1-tier cake...

My first cakes were white cream 3-tier wedding cake decorated with chocolate flowers, 3-tier chocolate cake in flower petal shaped decorated with colorful roses and the third one was a 2-tier chocolate cake in heart shaped decorated with leaves and tiny flowers. I do not have pictures of these cakes any longer. But, they are in my heart. I still remember those time of difficulties with trial and error of 'learning by doing' as if it was just happened...

All cakes I made are out of my own custom design inspired by real cakes and flower bouquets. I enjoy making chocolate cake and chocolate cake with colorful topping/decoration.

Strange thing is after these 3-tier cakes, I, then, made 1:24th scale cakes. At that time I do not know about scales. I only know that those I bought and collect are rather too big and need space which I do not have that plenty. Therefore, I just grab a color pen cap and started to punch the cake body out and decorated them with my tiny, handmade flowers (yes, they were mostly flowered cakes).

Later on, I realized that I have big and small hand day. Some days I just can't make things small and other days I simply can only make tiny stuff...
