City Under Siege!

A couple of our friends just got married and moved into a new house. Downstairs, my buddy Eric has set up a small art studio and has a big jar of Sharpies for everyone to decorate his walls with whatever they want. The neat thing is that the pictures and drawings are fluid, so someone might add something one week, and then it will get tweaked by someone else the following week and so on. Well, my brother-in-law James made the 'geologic cross section' you see above (in black ink) a few weeks ago and I couldn't help but add my giant monsters (and aliens!) attacking a freshly 'built' city!

Voltron Goes Tabletop

It looks like the mighty, multi-part, giant robot defender of the universe is coming to the tabletop! Voltron will be the first (hopefully of many!) licensed property for Privateer Press' Monsterpocalypse game. There's a good press writeup of it here. Of particular note, and somewhat tantalyzing, is Matt Wilson's quote:
"Monsterpocalypse was created with the goal of being able to feature guest stars from our favorite films and TV shows that have done so much to inspire the creation of the game."
It's tantalyzing because if they're looking at other licenses to add to the MonPoc stable, then color me interested. Again. Obviously if they were to tap into the Gojira franchise, wow, that would just be the mother lode considering just how many giant critters are running around that franchise. King Kong is another obvious choice too. Looking through the excellent Giant Monster Movie Database you'll see a ton of great creatures waiting to smash buildings and one another. The Cloverfield Monster would be just plain cool to see (as an oversized model?), and really you can't have giant monsters running around without Insectosaurus! Not to mention you could get a little more serious and tackle the Lovecraft mythos too.

It's funny, I used to rave about Monsterpocalypse and now that it's here (and has been out for a while) I still haven't played it. Money kinda has something to do with it, I can only support so many hobbies at a time, and MonPoc would be one more new game to get into. Secondly, even though it's prepainted...it's also collectible, ugh. I don't mind collectible games so much by themselves, but I know I would feel obligated to buy lots of boosters, and that brings us back full circle to the whole 'money' thing.

The possibilities are endless!

Monsterpocalypse! Wait, what the?

All right, Monsterpocalpyse has finally released! I've mentioned it on here a few times, and I must say, I am still keen on its release, maybe not as much now though as I was. Still, I was looking into maybe picking up a starter set or two, but I got to browsing...where you may be paying a premium for shiny packaging and new models with MonPoc, you may get just as much fun, if not more, at a fraction of the price from one of the originals...

Giant Monster Rampage. This came out in 2002, a full six years before Monsterpocalypse. Let's see, giant Ultraman throwing a right hand uppercut; check. Godzilla-like critter with a big horn on its nose; check. Buildings getting crushed; check. Ground forces and tanks scrambling; check. Air units; check. Here's the review, check it out. Now...

...isn't this the exact same thing I just described? Let's see, giant Ultraman throwing a right hand uppercut; check. Godzilla-like critter with a big horn on its nose; check. Buildings getting crushed; check. Ground forces and tanks scrambling; check. Air units; check. Sure, it's beautifully rendered, but I call shenanigans.

In addition to Giant Monster Rampage, there's another solid game out there called Monster Island. It came out about the same time, six years ago, and features many of the same mechanics. At both games lies the core; having fun smashing each other's Kaiju and stomping on tanks and buildings in the process. Here's the review on Monster Island, again at a fraction of the price.

Well, I guess make that all three games, including the newcomer. Now Earth-marauding saucers aren't that unique, granted, but once again; the similarities above (sorry for the grainy image) and below are awfully coincidental. I twice call shenanigans!

You can't deny the production value, or artistic quality of what MonPoc has to offer though, and I know Giant Monsters are nothing new, but in a gaming format, they're a bit of a unique niche. I am a little put-off though by Privateer Press' not-so-subtle translation. In the secondary market, it might be good to pick up singles to use with these other rule sets I've mentioned. I've heard the MonPoc rules aren't overly complex, so it could be good to pick up as a beer 'n pretzels game, or something to play with the wee ones. Speaking of rules, you can get the free Monsterpocalypse ones here, scroll to the bottom...

The website for Monsterpocalypse went up today, and it gives a lot of insight to the game, including some pics of it in action. Head on over and check it out...

The Monster Insider

The Monster Insider (dot net) is a new blog set up by the new guy working on the upcoming (go ahead and say it again...) new table-top game. It's been a while since I've mentioned Monsterpocalypse, but this laid back blog by the head honcho of the project promises to get the juices flowing again. Enjoy...

Rise, err, Cthulhu?

I haven't mentioned good ole Monsterpocalypse in a while, but this is worthy of dusting off the topic! Halloween was the last time Privateer Press let out a peep about the upcoming monster-mashup miniatures game they've got cooking, but here's another sneak peek. Some type of eldritch, mind-numbing terror from the deep or just one heck of a honorable mention? Who knows, but I'm diggin' the direction this is going in, if this is a faction, I'm totally calling dibs!

Monsterpocalypse is Coming!

Monsterpocalypse brings the kaiju (loosely translated from Japanese as ‘giant monster’) genre – a pop culture favorite – to the tabletop in the form of a fast-paced, action-packed CMG. Designed by Matt Wilson, the award winning creator of WARMACHINE and HORDES, Monsterpocalypse leverages the critically acclaimed abilities of Privateer Press as a leading miniatures manufacturer to enter a new category of product with a property that will appeal to a world-wide fan base of all ages.

I'm not entirely thrilled about the "collectible" aspect of it, but who am I kidding? This game looks to be a blast! I can't think of a better beer 'n pretzels format than giant monsters duking it out in the downtown streets. I've enjoyed WARMACHINE going on a few years now, and this being from the same creative team, I've got higher hopes than just some random CMG off the shelf from creators I've never heard of. There's no information on it other than a teaser off Privateer's main page, but something about this has got my interest piqued more than just a little. Lately there hasn't been a whole lot from the geek world out there to get me excited, but this here has done that very thing. It may have something do with all those hours playing Rampage back in the 1980's!
