A Long Time Coming

Monet and I have only got a handful of days left in Australia before we head off to our new home in the Untied Arab of Emirates.  Lyndon is there waiting excitedly for us to arrive.  Neither of us can wait to see each other.  It has been a long five weeks apart.

(Monet and my dad walking near their home...)

I am unsure when I will be posting next, I suspect it won't be long.  I know Lyndon has got the Internet all hooked up in our new home and our MacBook is waiting patiently for my fingers to start tapping away on it again.

(Monet and her cousin chatting and eating!)

Lyndon has stacked our new little fridge (our furniture arrives about 12 days after us) with some of my favourite things - glass bottled coke, Red Bull, 500ml Stella cans.  Oh! he does know how he can spoil me.  *smirk*  He has even gone and got some fresh ham for Monet, seeing that is her favourite.

(The back patio at my parents, Monet and Grandma made the paper decorations)

The new oven has been installed, there are new block-out blinds in all the rooms, a couple of bean bags waiting for our bums to sit on, new cutlery, a big heavy-based frying pan, new beds for us...the list goes on.  Enough stuff to get us by until the day our shipping container arrives, packed with our goods from Trinity Beach.

(Monet playing at the next door neighbours of my parents.)

I'm 'flirting' with the idea of beginning to pack our suitcases today.  Everything is ready and waiting to be packed in, it is just a matter of seeing if it does all fit back in our cases!

(Bubble blowing)

My parents and Lyndon's parents, along with Monet and I are going out for tea altogether tonight.

(Being a Pussy Cat!)

I have requested that only my dad drop Monet and I off at the airport.  They are horrible places aren't they?  At least this time it is not I who is being left behind - I hate that.

We're off to begin the new chapter in our lives.  It has been a long time coming....

How Much Do I Love This Song?

The answer? A lot.

Not bad for a 16 year old girl from Melbourne eh?

Pimped Snacks

The other night, we were watching an older episode of Gordon Ramsey's 'The F Word', when one of the regular guys on the show was talking about a website called 'Pimp That Snack'.  And me, being me, Googled and found.  And laughed.

If you want a good giggle, go here to Pimp That Snack and explore the site.  We sat for ages looking at all the creations and giggling our heads off.

Basically it is every day people who 'enlarge' a snack.  For example, here is someones 'pimped' Rocher...
Photo taken from 'Pimp That Snack dot com'

Everything is made from scratch with photos of how and what they did.  Hopefully the site will entertain you as much as it entertained us...

I think I'd 'pimp' a Vanilla Slice...or imagine a giant Lamington (mmm!), or how about a Giant Peppermint Crisp?

What snack would you pimp?

A Love/Hate Meme

I generally don't do Memes (doesn't everyone say this?) but Deana tagged me to do this one and something about it appealed to me.

I love to eat; warm, crusty bread with butter - a freshly made meal not made by me - a good, quality resturant meal - food on holidays!
I hate to eat; mushrooms - seafood (bar fish) - a bad meal cooked by me - sushi (I know!)
I love to go; to the hairdressers and the hairdresser cuts my hair like I ask - to places I have never been before but have seen pictures of - to the airport to pick people up or for me to take off somewhere
I hate to go; grocery shopping when the cupboards are empty and Monet is grumpy.
I love it when; there is beer in the fridge - my house is spotless - my car is full of petrol - Monet's in a good mood - plans work out!
I hate it when; Monet is naughty - I feel angry - it rains day after day after day - trains/planes are delayed - I have 'blogger block' *ahem* - you're waiting for someone to ring and they never do - you can't find a carpark
I love to see; Monet doing her best - laughing - Monet dancing and singing - kids having a wonderful time - surprised faces - Moet Champagne on special - a parcel in the mail - areoplanes landing/taking off - nature at its very best - the sun shining in a bright blue sky
I hate to see; Japanese slaughtering whales in Australian waters - young kids doing stuff they know they aren't meant to be doing (ie smoking) - women who don't wear bras but should - gstrings/thongs showing outside clothing - foolish people - people driving and talking with their hands at the same time
I love to hear; a song I haven't heard in ages which I adore - children laughing - Lyndon's keys opening the front door
I hate to hear; arguing, anywhere, anytime - cars speeding - young kids out on the street after midnight - my car not starting (not that has ever happened to me *Melody goes and knocks on wood*)

I'm not going to tag anyone but if you'd like to do this one, let me know and I'll pop along and have a gander.

Because I Want to be Nominated for Mother of the Year.

Well, not really. (And yes, another post to do with 'awards'.)

There have been many a time when I don't actually deserve that award, you can ask Monet herself. ie. No hat and sunnies for child, when out and about some days.

But one reason I deserve the nomination is because I seriously can prepare my daughter with lovely afternoon teas. I try to get her through to dinner time after lunch with a nicely prepared afternoon snack.

A few weeks ago I began making her 'little platters' of some of her favourite things.

I love making platters of food for people to enjoy, I guess it is still part of my 'working life' in me. I used to work for many years, in the deli department of the supermarket chain Safeway. I loved it, well, it would have been the best job if it wasn't for customers. True. One of the main jobs I had was to prepare the platters for customer orders. I guess I have a 'knack' for those things and I got to use my design degree for something *snigger, snigger* Years later I worked in the Bakery Department (even made it to Bakery Manager *woo-hoo*) and made and decorated the customer orders for cakes.

So, I enjoy making platters, which is the reason for this post.

And Monet enjoys eating them.

And I enjoy preparing them.

See, I still have that 'design' element in me, afterall.

An Award

And Melody's 'Dip of The Year' award goes to....

Yumi's brand Sweet Potato and Cashew Dip.

Congratulations.

(It was a toss up between this one and their Sun-dried Tomato and Macadamia, but this one won out in the end!)

Which 'Dip' deserves your 'Dip of The Year' award?

Nothing Like Being Organised

Gee, anyone around here would be thinking we are going on a European Holiday, judging by the books on the dining table...

(Half belong to our to our local library!)

There is nothing like knowing what we want to see, where we want to go and how much it's going to cost.

I'm also stroller researching. Can anyone tell me what the Maclaren Volo one is like?

Will it cater to a 110cm high, 16 kilo, 3 year old? By all my researching on the net it seems it will, but if anyone has any personal experience with one please say... (By the sounds of it, it folds well, is easy to carry over your shoulder, is comfortable, easy to push) We're not going to buy it here, because the thought of 3 suitcases, 3 carry-on bags, a 3 year old AND a stroller in the mix, in an international airport does nothing to soothe me! We're going to buy it in London and will mainly be used to roam the streets of that city.

Anyway, you don't want to hear all about that...

If you want to read something that makes you go 'Ewww', read this. It made me cringe.

And to keep us all on our toes up in this corner of Australia, there is a Cyclone brewing in the Coral Sea, still a fair distance from here and moving a very slow 5 kilometers per hour. May I present to you Tropical Cyclone 'Guba' (yes, Guba!)....

It's not a threat to us (at the moment) but is partly to blame for the crappy weather over the last few days (raining on and off and wind). This Cyclone is apparently the first of many this season. As long as there isn't one on or near April 17th, I'll be happy!!

A Joke (in a Truthful Kind of Way...)

Did you hear the one about the couple, who have been with each other for over 11 years and engaged for five years and thought they'd better tie the knot in 2008, so they have an excuse to go on an overseas holiday?

You didn't?

Well, you have now.

La..la..laaa.....

Guess whose daughter sang the best AND the loudest at Playgroup today??

Yep, mine.

Usually a little reserved when it comes to 'sing-along' time, Monet today sang in a fine voice!
I wasn't the only one who sat shocked as the other parents looked over at me with raised eyebrows and grins.

*lovely*

Football Final

It is the AFL (Australian Rules Football) Grand Final today. It's a big day really for all Football followers, even if your teams aren't in the Final. Today's game is Port Adelaide vs. Geelong. I'm not fussed who wins but I do prefer that Geelong take the flag (being a Victorian and all.)

You are more than welcome to pop over and watch the game this afternoon with us.

I've made some biscuits to nibble on (quick, before Monet eats them all)...

...and we've stockpiled the fridge with a variety of beers...

I'm sure you'd like to come over now, yes? *giggle giggle*

I have hot dogs sitting in the fridge, along with mini pies and sausage rolls in the freezer, all ready to go.

It'll be just like being at the footy, just without the expensive prices, the annoying football fans and the hit and miss weather! *heehee*

Tragedy

Being a blogger, you get to know so wonderful people. I feel as if I have some wonderful friends in both Australia and abroad. And when one of your blog friends hurts, sometimes, I do too. My dear blog friend, the wonderful Bob-Kat in the UK, suffered a loss on the weekend. One I cannot and do not want to imagine. Please go and visit her and send her good thoughts and hugs. I know she will appreciate it...

My 200th Post on melody-biglittlesister.blogspot!

I'm sitting here outside with the warmth of the sunshine on my back, as I celebrate in writing my 200th blogspot post. I love blogging, I really do and have found a great array of people through this blog. Like you. *smile*

You might see on the side bar that I began this blog in October last year. But I have been blogging longer than 10 months, its actually been about 3 years now. I was pregnant with Monet and my sister suggested I begin a blog. As she had 3 accounts with 'typepad', she organised and set up a blog of my very own. And it was she who thought of the name biglittlesister. I'm taller than my sister, but younger than my sister. Hence, the name.

Last year I decided I should probably give the space I was using, back to my sister and set up my own account, so melody-biglittlesister began. And here I am, 200 posts in with 4 bloody blogs to maintain. Here, here and here. But I love it. Blogging gives me an opportunity to share with you, with my friends and with my family what we get up to!

I'm not sure when post number 201 will be posted as Monet and I are hitting the skies tomorrow morning (early) to visit family and friends in Melbourne and country Victoria. I've already checked in and have my boarding passes printed. We'll be gone until Sunday week when we fly back up to Brisbane and be reunited with Lyndon and spend a few days exploring that city and visiting Dreamworld. It is going to be a busy couple of weeks, but I'll try and keep you posted.

Sorry in advance if I don't come around to your place and visit but I will try and do so when time permits.

Up, up and away!!!! (I took this photo from our balcony a few weeks back. We see most planes fly into Cairns from our place and I still love watching them.)

Neighbours. Everybody needs good Neighbours...

I live approximately 2500 kilometres (in a straight line) from my parents in country Victoria. My sister lives approximately 12,500 kilometres (in a straight line) from them. We can't be there if they need us at the drop of a hat or generally just be there. That's where their neighbours step in. And I'm grateful they have such terrific ones at that.

My dad is currently on the long flight haul back from visiting Kimbofo in London and arrives back on Australian soil later on tonight.

As my mother only drives around the country town/area they live in, she wasn't keen on battling city traffic to pick him up this evening. It has been many (many) years since she has driven from our home town to Melbourne, even though when we were younger she often would. I guess it is a case of not doing it often enough which makes you scared. I understand that.

So a dilemma was rising of how dad was going to get home from the airport tonight. Would he stay at one of the hotels at the airport and catch a bus into the city tomorrow and then another bus home tomorrow? (Could you imagine doing that after a 24 hour flight?) There would be no doubt in my mind if we were still living in Melbourne I would have greeted him and driven him home. But we don't.

That's where my parents neighbours stepped in this week.

Since my mother has been home alone, (though one of her sisters from Melbourne stayed for a few weeks to keep her company and help potter around the garden), for the 6 weeks my dad has been away in Morocco, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, England and Scotland, their neighbours have been popping in.

On one side of their property, is a family with 4 young children with the parents in their late 30's/ early 40's. Behind them is another young family with 3 young children with the parents in their late 30's. In a way, these neighbours are like my parents surrogate families with non-related grandchildren! I'm grateful that these families are there and are a great support for my parents, who, by the way, may be in their early 60's but are not old and frail like it probably sounds as if they are. They aren't.

On Monday, Pete, the neighbour from behind my parents acreage, popped in to say that he would go and pick up my dad tonight. The airport from the little hamlet my parents live (and where I grew up) is some 2 - 2 1/2 hours away by car. What a terrific neighbour. He is the same neighbour who has been mowing the lawn, helping chop the firewood etc., whilst my dad has been away. His wife has invited mum around for tea once or twice. (My parents spent Christmas lunch with them as both Kimbofo and I were obviously absent!) These are the type of neighbours you would love.

If they ever read this post, I want to thank them publically. I do. But I doubt they ever will.

Unlike my experiences with neighbours. The woman who lives next door to us now, is one rude old b***h who we never see (which is good), but if you do see her down the street or at the pub (where she works) she doesn't even acknowledge you. I don't have time for people like that.

The lady who lived next door to us in Cairns city was wonderful and very lovely. (Unlike her son who was rude too - would ignore you if he saw you!) She was really sorry to see us 3 move on.

When we lived in Melbourne there was a lovely elderly couple who lived a few doors down who were very, very lovely and adored baby Monet. They were friendly and they knew if they needed anything to knock on my door (though they never did!)

Neighbours. Everybody needs good Neighbours...

What are your neighbours like?

Sometimes I Don't Mind Early Mornings

We've been waking up here pretty early, the last few mornings. Lyndon is usually out of the house by 6am (like always) and Monet and I both tend to get up between the hours of 7 and 8.

But not this week.

Monday and Tuesday morning it was 6:30am.

Today was just after 6am.

I don't really mind that much, being up at that hour. I used to start work at 6am (so I was up at 5am) for many years, so as I said, I don't really mind that much.

Especially when you are greeted to the day with this view out of my kitchen window...

...and this view off our back balcony... (I love these birds! - I hope you can spot him)
Ahh...ain't life grand? (but still hoping Monet rises a little later tomorrow! *fingers crossed*)

What time do you usually get out of bed?

I've Won An Award...

...thanks to Sarch!

I usually don't do MEME but I like the idea of this one. The idea is to award five blogs which make me think. I have so many blogs I love to visit that it is hard to award only five! But here goes...

Marie over at Practigal. Over in New York state, Marie lives with her husband and her Little Man K, who has just turned 3. We have a lot in common, even though we live at opposite sides of the earth! I enjoy reading about Marie's takes on things, especially when it comes to her son. Its amazing how children of around this age, even on the other side of the planet, can be so much alike.

Deana over at Friday Night Fish Fry. Oh how Deana makes me laugh. Every time I read her blog I am guaranteed to crack a smile. She lives in a beautiful part of America in an absolutely gorgeous home with her husband. Her photographs are amazing, I enjoy viewing her part of the world and her perspective on life...

Stella of Ms. Mac's Meanderings. Another laugh out loud blog I read religiously. A Scottish mother of 3 boys, married to an Aussie man, living life in the gorgeous surroundings of a little Swiss village. Her take on life is very tongue in cheek, which I appreciate and I always look forward to reading what she is meandering about each day...

Delane at Life In Mayberry. He lives in Mayberry, North Carolina, not far from his sister Deana (of FNFF) with his wife of 9 years and their two gorgeous sons. His section of the world I would truly love to visit - his descriptions of his daily life I do enjoy reading.

Kim from Reading Matters. Okay, okay, she's my big sis but I do like to read this blog daily. The main content of this blog is about books (obviously) and anything to do with books. She has a wide fan (?) base and is well worth a peep if you are stuck on what to read next. Her reviews on books are something I take into consideration when I am choosing a new book to read.
The participation rules of the award are simple:
1) If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think
2) Link to this
post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme.
3) Optional: Proudly display the 'Thinking Blogger Award' with a link to the post that you wrote..

Where Else But Queensland?

Being Australian and living in Australia, a lot of the time we find ourselves saying Only in America... (would a certain story happen - all apologies to my American friends!)

But lately I find myself getting disillusioned with Queenslanders and Queensland itself. (Queensland is the Australian state I live in, for those of you who don't know!) As much as I love it (I seriously do!) somethings make me scratch my head in wonder. I won't start. That's a different post altogether.

Only in Queensland though, would you find a sign on a beach that looks like this....
I love it. I hope you find it as amusing as I do. It's a pretty clear message if you ask me but then I guess there would be people out there who would view the sign, shrug their shoulders and say "So what!" They wouldn't if they knew that the 'Stingers' could permanently scar or kill you.

Because I Can...

Can you believe this is my Monet Lulu on her actual birth day? Her dark hair has turned into blonde locks and she now struts around in a good Size 3, rather than a Triple 0.

My baby is growing...

Because I Can...

Wasn't she a chubby little cutie, at four months old?

Sparkle Fingers and Yummy Cupcakes

Yesterday morning after popping out of my local supermarket, I visited the bakery to pick up a loaf of fresh bread.

"Would you like a sparkle finger?" The bakery assistant asked Monet.
Monet looked at me.
"What's a 'sparkle finger'?" I asked.
"A small finger bun we make especially for the little kids, here, I'll show you..." she said.
Well, as soon as I saw it I knew Monet would want it so I accepted. No money was exchanged. Monet smiled. So did I. You don't get many things for free these days do you? No wonder I love my local 'Baker's Delight' store!! Hehe...

And because I can, for a little self-promotion, if you want the recipe to these...
...click here, for my recipe blog named 'cakes, cookies and an odd roast dinner'.
