TRAIN

Fairfield is a railway station in Melbourne, Australia, located in the suburb of Fairfield, on the Hurstbridge railway line. Fairfield is classed as a Host Station and is in Metlink. Fairfield is a predominantly residential suburb, with a small north-eastern pocket remaining a light industrial area. Because it is situated on what many regard as the fringes of Melbourne's popular and much-revived 'inner city', gentrification has been strong, and property prices are high. To the south is the Yarra River and surrounding parkland, and the popular Fairfield Boathouse.

SUNSET SILHOUETTES

Every ending has within it the seeds of a new beginning. Look forward to what will be, while remembering what has gone by, but don't dwell in the past. The brightness of the future depends on how well we nurture the candle of the present moment. Cherish the present while acknowledging that it has as its foundation the past, and build solidly now that you may dwell securely on the tall towers of tomorrow.

ANTIQUE

Antique shops abound in Melbourne and one need not go far in order to find one and explore its treasures at leisure. Whilst Australia is a relatively young country, and therefore finds it easier to look ahead to the future, the population has also many ties to the past, with its multicultural heritage playing a very important role in shaping its future. Antique objects are a very important bridge to the past and family keepsakes handed down the generations or acquired at a shop are a powerful reminder of a family's past memories and history.

REMEMBRANCE

Sunday, 11 November 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). One hundred years ago, on 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing to an end the First World War.

From the summer of 1918, the five divisions of the Australian Corps had been at the forefront of the allied advance to victory. Beginning with their stunning success at the battle of Hamel in July, they helped to turn the tide of the war at Amiens in August, followed by the capture of Mont St Quentin and Pèronne, and the breaching of German defences at the Hindenburg Line in September.

By early October the exhausted Australians were withdrawn from battle. They had achieved a fighting reputation out of proportion to their numbers, but victory had come at a heavy cost. They suffered almost 48,000 casualties during 1918, including more than 12,000 dead. In the four years of the war more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and more than 60,000 of them had died. The social effects of these losses cast a long shadow over the postwar decades.

Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. The Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne is a fitting monument to the memory of our fallen.

Lest we forget.

HONEY ON THE COMB

A friend of ours has a couple of beehives in his back garden and he produces a great deal of honey every year. We are the very happy recipients of a jar of this pure, organic, home-made honey, which is harvested regularly. I am fascinated by his hives, especially when they are being harvested. Chewing on little bit of honeycomb is a good reward for helping out with the harvest.

The very green Melbourne suburbs with their large garden allotments all full of every kind of seasonal flowers has been the norm in our city making urban apiaries a rewarding pursuit. With increasing development and the wholesale reduction of gardens and flowers, I think we can expect less honey due to disappearing backyards...

ETERNAL FLAME

The Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne is Victoria's memorial to the men and women who have served Australia in armed conflicts and peacekeeping operations throughout our nation's history. The Eternal Flame is placed nearby, representing eternal life. The gas flame has burned continuously with few interruptions since it was first lit in 1934.

ST PAUL'S

St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne is the metropolitical and cathedral church of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne, Victoria in Australia. It is the seat of the Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne and Metropolitan of the Province of Victoria. The cathedral, which was built in stages, is a major Melbourne landmark.

A distinguished English architect, William Butterfield, designed the cathedral, in the architectural style of Gothic transitional. The foundation stone was laid in 1880 and, on 22 January 1891, the cathedral was consecrated. St Paul's replaced St James Old Cathedral which then stood on the corner of William Street and Collins Street - later moved to a site near the Flagstaff Gardens. To fit the block, the cathedral building is orientated NNW.

The erection of the spires began in 1926, to the design of John Barr of Sydney instead of Butterfield's original design. The 1960s saw extensive work completed to the exterior of the cathedral and the T.C. Lewis organ was restored in 1989 by a major National Trust appeal. Major restoration works were completed in 2009 with significant repairs to the spires, the building of the Moorhouse Tower Lantern and the new processional doors.

ART COLONY

Montsalvat was originally established as a true artists’ colony in over 12 acres situated in Eltham, an outer suburb of Melbourne, Australia. It was founded by architect and artist Justus Jörgensen (1893-1975) in 1934. It is home to a small hamlet of various buildings, houses and halls set amongst extensive established gardens. The colony of Montsalvat reflects very much the life of Justus Jörgensen and his friends and family.

Architecturally, Montsalvat has much in common with a simple French village in Provence revealing a mix of rustic architectural styles. There is very much a European village feel to the place! The picturesque buildings are surrounded by lawns and gardens.

The Great Hall of Montsalvat is like a European Manor House. Today it is used for exhibitions, receptions and concerts. Much of the art of Jorgensen is exhibited here, as well as the art of his contemporaries.

WEED

Stellaria media, chickweed, in the family Caryophyllaceae, is a cool-season annual plant native to Europe, which is often eaten by chickens. It is sometimes called common chickweed to distinguish it from other plants called chickweed. Other common names include chickenwort, craches, maruns, winterweed. The plant germinates in autumn or late winter, then forms large mats of foliage. Flowers are very tiny and white, followed quickly by the seed pods. This plant flowers and sets seed at the same time. Our garden is currently full of this weed, a sure sign of Spring's arrival (and the need to do some serious weeding)...

Stellaria media is edible, delicious and nutritious, and is used as a leaf vegetable, often raw in salads. It is one of the ingredients of the symbolic dish consumed in the Japanese spring-time festival, Nanakusa-no-sekku. The plant has medicinal uses and is a common ingredient in folk medicine. It has been used as a remedy to treat itchy skin conditions and pulmonary diseases. 17th century herbalist John Gerard recommended it as a remedy for mange. Modern herbalists mainly prescribe it for skin diseases, and also for bronchitis, rheumatic pains, arthritis and period pain. A poultice of chickweed can be applied to cuts, burns and bruises. Not all of these uses are supported by scientific evidence.

ATLAS

Atlas once perched proudly on top of the original Atlas Assurance Company building that was constructed in the late 1800s, on the same site where he now resides, on Collins St, just up from Queen St. During the 1950s a new Altas Building was constructed and the statue was moved the front of the new building at ground level to be admired by all who passed. During the 1970s the building was again demolished to make way for the latest structure that occupies 406 Collins Street. This once proud statue now sits high up in a corner, where he is ignored by most rushing past below him...

CAT

This fine fellow is a neighbour's pet and has a lovely disposition. Pet ownership is high in Melbourne. Dogs are the most common pet, with 39% of households owning a dog. There are estimated to be 4.2 million pet dogs in Australia; 19 dogs for every 100 people. Cats are the second most common pet, with 29% of households owning a cat. There are estimated to be 3.3 million pet cats in Australia; 15 cats for every 100 people.

CITY FROM AFAR

One of the pleasures of flying in to Melbourne is when the time and flying approach path are such that one catches glimpses of the City from the plane window. The vast area Melbourne occupies (9,992.5 km2!) becomes apparent and also the high density of the CBD with its skyscrapers.

"DOWNTOWN"

When I talk to American tourists invariably they say something about "Downtown" Melbourne. This is an Americanism as my trusty dictionary says:
downtown chiefly North American adjective| ˈdaʊntaʊn | in or relating to the central part or main business and commercial area of a town or city: downtown Chicago | a downtown bar.
Here in Australia the term for the same area of the Central Business District is "The City". However you call it, at night it quite pretty!
